Metal-Dependent Strengthening and Weakening of M−H and M−C Bonds by an Oxo Ligand: Thermal Gas-Phase Activation of Methane by [OMH]+ and [MH]+ (M=Mo, Ti)

Phenyl-Group Exchange in Triphenylphosphine Mediated by Cationic Gold-Platinum Complexes-A Gas-Phase Mimetic Approach

The PPh₃ ligands in the heterodinuclear AuPt complex [(Ph₃P)AuPt(PPh₃)₃][BAr₄^F] (BAr₄^F = tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate) exhibit a high fluxionality on the AuPt core. Fast intramolecular and slow intermolecular processes for the reversible exchange of the PPh₃ ligands have been identified. When [(Ph₃P)AuPt(PPh₃)₃][BAr₄^F] is heated in solution, the formation of benzene is observed, and a trinuclear, cationic AuPt₂ complex is generated. This process is preceded by reversible phenyl-group exchange between the PPh₃ ligands present in the reaction mixture as elucidated by deuterium-labeling studies. Both the elimination of benzene and the preceding reversible phenyl-group exchange have originally been observed in mass-spectrometry-based CID experiments (CID = Collision-Induced Dissociation). While CID of mass-selected [Au,Pt,(PPh₃)₄]⁺ results exclusively in the loss of PPh₃, the resulting cation [Au,Pt,(PPh₃)₃]⁺ selectively eliminates C₆H₆. Thus, the dissociation of a PPh₃ ligand from [Au,Pt,(PPh₃)₃]⁺ is energetically not able to compete with processes which result in C-H- and C-P-bond cleavage. In both media, the heterobimetallic nature of the employed complexes is the key for the observed reactivity. Only the intimate interplay of the gas-phase investigations, studies in solution, and thorough DFT computations allowed for the elucidation of the mechanistic details of the reactivity of [(Ph₃P)AuPt(PPh₃)₃][BAr₄^F].

Propene oxidation catalysis and electronic structure of M55 particles (M = Pd or Rh): differences and similarities between Pd55 and Rh55

Propene oxidation is one of the important reactions that occurs in the presence of a three-way catalyst but its reaction mechanism is unclear. The reaction mechanisms and differences in catalysis between Pd and Rh particles were investigated by DFT calculations employing Pd₅₅ and Rh₅₅ as the model catalysts. The O-attack mechanism, in which the O atom adsorbed on the Pd₅₅ and Rh₅₅ surfaces attacks the C[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bond of propene, needs to overcome a large activation barrier (E_a). On the other hand, C-H bond cleavage of the methyl group of propene easily occurs with moderate E_a; the mechanism initiated by this C-H activation is named H-transfer mechanism. In this mechanism, the next step is allyl alcohol formation, followed by the second C-H bond activation of the CH₂OH species of allyl alcohol, and the final step is proton transfer from OH-substituted π-allyl species to the OH group on the metal surface to yield acrolein and water molecules with the regeneration of M₅₅. The rate-determining step is the second C-H bond activation. Its E_a is 17.4 kcal mol^-1 for the reaction on Pd₅₅ and 34.4 kcal mol^-1 for the reaction on Rh₅₅. These results indicate that Pd particles are more active than Rh particles in propene oxidation, which agrees with the experimental findings. The larger E_a for Rh₅₅ than that for Pd₅₅ arises from the stronger Rh-OH bond than the Pd-OH bond. The higher energy d-valence band-top of Rh₅₅ than that of Pd₅₅ is the origin of the stronger Rh-OH bond than the Pd-OH bond. Thus, the d-valence band-top energy is an important property for understanding and designing catalysts for alkene oxidation.

Structural Properties of Gas-Phase Molybdenum Oxide Clusters [Mo4O13]2-, [HMo4O13]-, and [CH3Mo4O13]- Studied by Collision-Induced Dissociation

Molybdenum oxide-based catalysts are widely used for the ammoxidation of toluene, methanation of CO, or hydrodeoxygenation. As a first step towards a gas-phase model system, we investigate here structural properties of mass-selected [Mo₄O₁₃]^2-, [HMo₄O₁₃]^-, and [CH₃Mo₄O₁₃]^- by a combination of collision-induced dissociation (CID) experiments and quantum chemical calculations. According to calculations, the common structural motif is an eight-membered ring composed of four MoO₂ units and four O atoms. The 13th O atom is located above the center of the ring and connects two to four Mo centers. For [Mo₄O₁₃]^2- and [HMo₄O₁₃]^-, dissociation requires opening or rearrangement of the ring structure, which is quite facile for the doubly charged [Mo₄O₁₃]^2-, but energetically more demanding for [HMo₄O₁₃]^-. In the latter case, the hydrogen atom is found to stay preferentially with the negatively charged fragments [HMo₂O₇]^- or [HMoO₄]^-. The doubly charged species [Mo₄O₁₃]^2- loses one MoO₃ unit at low energies while Coulomb explosion into the complementary fragments [Mo₂O₆]^- and [Mo₂O₇]^- dominates at elevated collision energies. [CH₃Mo₄O₁₃]^- affords rearrangements of the methyl group with low barriers, preferentially eliminating formaldehyde, while the ring structure remains intact. [CH₃Mo₄O₁₃]^- also reacts efficiently with water, leading to methanol or formaldehyde elimination.

Titanium Insertion into CO Bonds in Anionic Ti-CO2 Complexes

We explore the structures of [Ti(CO₂) _y]^- cluster anions using infrared photodissociation spectroscopy and quantum chemistry calculations. The existence of spectral signatures of metal carbonyl CO stretching modes shows that insertion of titanium atoms into C-O bonds represents an important reaction during the formation of these clusters. In addition to carbonyl groups, the infrared spectra show that the titanium center is coordinated to oxalato, carbonato, and oxo ligands, which form along with the metal carbonyls. The presence of a metal oxalato ligand promotes C-O bond insertion in these systems. These results highlight the affinity of titanium for C-O bond insertion processes.
