Abstract
The vertical excitation energies of 13 BODIPY based dye sensitizers are benchmarked by means of TD-DFT, using 36 functionals from different DFT rungs. Most TD-DFT results were found to overestimate the excitation energies, and show mean absolute error (MAE) values in the range 0.2–0.5 eV. The dispersion-corrected, spin-component-scaled, double-hybrid (DSD) functionals DSD-BLYP and DSD-PBEP86 were found to have the smallest MAE values of 0.083 eV and 0.106 eV, respectively, which is close to the range of average errors found in the more expensive coupled-cluster methods. Moreover, DSD-BLYP and DSD-PBEP86 functionals show excellent consistency and quality of results (standard deviation = 0.048 eV and 0.069 eV respectively). However, the range separated hybrid (RSH) and the range separated double hybrid (RSDH) functionals were found to provide the best predictability (linear determination coefficient R2 > 0.97 eV). The excitation energies of 13 BODIPY dye sensitizers are benchmarked by means of TD-DFT, using 36 functionals. Spin-component-scaled double-hybrid (DSD) functionals are found to show the best performance.![]()

Abstract
In this work, to make out the aryl-fusion effect on the photophysical properties of boron-pyridyl-imino-isoindoline dyes, compounds 1-5 were theoretically studied through analyses of their geometric and electronic structures, optical properties, transport abilities, and radiative (k r) and non-radiative decay rate (k nr) constants. The highest occupied molecular orbitals of aryl-fused compounds 2-5 are higher owing to the extended conjugation. Interestingly, aryl fusion in pyridyl increases the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level, while isoindoline decreases the LUMO level; thus, 4 and 5 with aryl fusion both in pyridyl and isoindoline exhibit a similar LUMO to 1. Compounds 4 and 5 show relatively low ionization potentials and high electron affinities, suggesting a better ability to inject holes and electrons. Importantly, the aryl fusion is conducive to the decrease of k IC. The designed compound 5 exhibits a red-shifted emission maximum, low λh, and low k IC, which endow it with great potential for applications in organic electronics. Our investigation provides an in-depth understanding of the aryl-fusion effect on boron-pyridyl-imino-isoindoline dyes at molecular levels and demonstrates that it is achievable.

Abstract
Organoboron complexes are of interest as chromophores for dye sensitizers owing to their light-harvesting and carrier-transporting properties. In this study, compounds containing boron β-ketoiminate (BKI) as a chromophore were synthesized and used as dye sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells. The new dyes were orange or red crystals and showed maximum absorptions in the 410-450 nm wavelength region on titanium dioxide substrates. These electrodes exhibited maximum efficiencies of over 80% in incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency spectra, suggesting that the continuous process of light absorption-excitation-electron injection was effectively performed. Open-circuit photovoltages were relatively high owing to the large dipole moments of the BKI dyes with a linear molecular structure. Thus, a maximum power conversion efficiency of 5.3% was successfully observed. Comparison of BKI dyes with boron β-diketonate dyes revealed certain differences in solution stability, spectral properties, and photovoltaic characteristics.

Abstract
Dye-sensitized solar cells based on boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) have gained widespread attention in recent years because of their easy structural modification, strong light absorption, and photostability. In this paper, a series of dyes with single or double acceptors based on the BODIPY framework have been designed and compared by density functional theory calculation. Results show that the dyes with double acceptors exhibit smaller band gap and broader red-shift absorption peaks than their counterparts with single acceptors. To further improve the dye performance, polythiophenes and electron donating groups are successively introduced into BODIPY and donor moieties of double-acceptor dyes. The introduction of polythiophene effectively improved the light harvesting efficiency (LHE) from 0.79 to 0.96. And, the stronger electron donating groups create a narrow band gap, resulting in a broad absorption band in the range of 400-1600 nm. These modifications not only broaden the absorption range but also facilitate electron injection, thereby improving the photoelectric conversion efficiency, which is beneficial for the potential application of BODIPY sensitizers in the field of photovoltaics.
