Polar Intermetallics Pr5Co2Ge3and Pr7Co2Ge4with Planar Hydrocarbon-Like Metal Clusters

Flux Growth, Crystal Structure, and Chemical Bonding of Yb2PdGe3, an AlB2 Superstructure within the Rare-Earth Series

The complete structure revision of the RE₂PdGe₃ (RE = rare-earth metal) series revealed that Yb₂PdGe₃ is the only AlB₂ ordered superstructure. Good-quality single crystals of this compound were successfully grown from molten indium flux, enabling accurate single-crystal investigations. Yb₂PdGe₃ crystallizes with the Ce₂CoSi₃-type structure in the hexagonal space group P6/mmm (no. 191) with lattice parameters a = 8.468(1) Å and c = 4.0747(7) Å. This structure is a four-order derivative of AlB₂, composed of planar _∞²[PdGe₃] honeycomb layers spaced by Yb species, located at the center of Ge₆ and Ge₄Pd₂ hexagons. A superconducting transition is observed below the critical temperature of 4 K. A divalent state of Yb is deduced from magnetic susceptibility measurements below room temperature, which indicate an almost nonmagnetic behavior. A charge transfer from Yb to Pd and Ge was evidenced by the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) effective charges; polar four-atomic Ge-Pd/Yb and two-atomic Pd-Yb bonds were observed from the ELI-D (electron localizability indicator), partial ELI-D, and ELI-D/QTAIM intersections. The bonding interactions between Ge atoms within regular Ge₆ hexagons are found to be intermediate between single bonds, as in elemental Ge, and higher-order bonds in the hypothetic Ge₆H₆ and Ge₆^6- aromatic molecules.

Cation Clustering in Intermetallics: The Modular Bonding Schemes of CaCu and Ca2Cu

Electropositive metals such as the alkaline earths or lanthanides are generally assumed to act largely as spectator cations in solid state compounds. In polar intermetallic phases, atoms of such elements are indeed often placed at the peripheries of anions or polyanionic fragments. However, they also show a pronounced tendency to cluster with each other in these peripheral regions in a manner suggestive of multicenter bonding. In this Article, we theoretically investigate the bonding schemes that underlie these cationic cluster arrangements, focusing on CaCu (whose two polymorphs are based on the intergrowth of the FeB- and CrB-types) and Ca₂Cu (a Ca-intercalated derivative of CaCu). The structures of these phases are based on Cu zigzag chains embedded in matrices of Ca atoms arranged into increasingly well-developed fragments of closest-packed arrangements. Using reversed approximation Molecular Orbital (raMO) analysis, the Cu chains of both structures are revealed to be connected via nearly fully occupied Cu-Cu isolobal σ-bonds, such that the Cu atoms control 11.67 of the 13 and 15 electrons/formula unit of CaCu and Ca₂Cu, respectively. Most of the remaining electrons are drawn to multicenter bonding functions in the Ca sublattices despite the availability of additional Cu 4p orbitals, indicating that the electronegativity difference between Ca and Cu is insufficient to achieve formal Cu oxidation states far beyond -1. The metallic nature of the Ca-based bonding subsystem is reflected in the raMO analysis by a plurality of resonance structures that can be generated from the occupied crystal orbitals. Across these bonding schemes, a separation of the electronic structure into largely self-contained Ca-Ca and Ca-Cu states is a consistent theme. This modularity in the bonding can be correlated to the ease with which this and related systems rearrange FeB- and CrB-type features, which may provide clues to identifying other intermetallic families with similar degrees of structural versatility.

Electron-Poor Polar Intermetallics: Complex Structures, Novel Clusters, and Intriguing Bonding with Pronounced Electron Delocalization

Intermetallic compounds represent an extensive pool of candidates for energy related applications stemming from magnetic, electric, optic, caloric, and catalytic properties. The discovery of novel intermetallic compounds can enhance understanding of the chemical principles that govern structural stability and chemical bonding as well as finding new applications. Valence electron-poor polar intermetallics with valence electron concentrations (VECs) between 2.0 and 3.0 e^-/atom show a plethora of unprecedented and fascinating structural motifs and bonding features. Therefore, establishing simple structure-bonding-property relationships is especially challenging for this compound class because commonly accepted valence electron counting rules are inappropriate. During our efforts to find quasicrystals and crystalline approximants by valence electron tuning near 2.0 e^-/atom, we observed that compositions close to those of quasicrystals are exceptional sources for unprecedented valence electron-poor polar intermetallics, e.g., Ca₄Au₁₀In₃ containing (Au₁₀In₃) wavy layers, Li_14.7Mg_36.8Cu_21.5Ga₆₆ adopting a type IV clathrate framework, and Sc₄Mg_xCu_15-xGa_7.5 that is incommensurately modulated. In particular, exploratory syntheses of AAu₃T (A = Ca, Sr, Ba and T = Ge, Sn) phases led to interesting bonding features for Au, such as columns, layers, and lonsdaleite-type tetrahedral frameworks. Overall, the breadth of Au-rich polar intermetallics originates, in part, from significant relativistics effect on the valence electrons of Au, effects which result in greater 6s/5d orbital mixing, a small effective metallic radius, and an enhanced Mulliken electronegativity, all leading to ultimate enhanced binding with nearly all metals including itself. Two other successful strategies to mine electron-poor polar intermetallics include lithiation and "cation-rich" phases. Along these lines, we have studied lithiated Zn-rich compounds in which structural complexity can be realized by small amounts of Li replacing Zn atoms in the parent binary compounds CaZn₂, CaZn₃, and CaZn₅; their phase formation and bonding schemes can be rationalized by Fermi surface-Brillouin zone interactions between nearly free-electron states. "Cation-rich", electron-poor polar intermetallics have emerged using rare earth metals as the electropositive ("cationic") component together metal/metalloid clusters that mimic the backbones of aromatic hydrocarbon molecules, which give evidence of extensive electronic delocalization and multicenter bonding. Thus, we can identify three distinct, valence electron-poor, polar intermetallic systems that have yielded unprecedented phases adopting novel structures containing complex clusters and intriguing bonding characteristics. In this Account, we summarize our recent specific progress in the developments of novel Au-rich BaAl₄-type related structures, shown in the "gold-rich grid", lithiation-modulated Ca-Li-Zn phases stabilized by different bonding characteristics, and rare earth-rich polar intermetallics containing unprecedented hydrocarbon-like planar Co-Ge metal clusters and pronounced delocalized multicenter bonding. We will focus mainly on novel structural motifs, bonding analyses, and the role of valence electrons for phase stability.
