Pacman Compounds: From Energy Transfer to Cooperative Catalysis

Unsymmetric Co-Facial "Salixpyrrole" Hydrogen Evolution Catalysts: Two Metals are Better than One

Designing ligand architectures that can mimic enzyme active sites is a promising approach for developing efficient small molecule activation catalysts for sustainable energy applications. Some key design features include chemically distinct binding pockets for multiple metal centers and a three-dimensional structure that controls the positioning of catalytic sites. With these principles in mind, mono- and bimetallic unsymmetric cofacial palladium complexes, 2 and 3, respectively, bearing ligands with calixpyrrole and salen coordination sites, or "salixpyrrole" ligands, are reported. These species were accessed in a straightforward Schiff-base reaction with appreciable yields. In addition, both 2 and 3 were found to be active hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts using para-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate as the proton source. The two salixpyrrole species displayed different mechanisms of action, with 2 showing a second-order dependence on acid concentration, whereas 3 exhibited a first-order dependence. Moreover, the bimetallic catalyst was significantly more efficient, with higher turnover frequencies, 4640 s-1 vs 1680 s-1 for 2, and lower overpotentials, 0.39 V vs 0.69 V for 2. The results reported herein provide proof-of-concept that bimetallic catalysts with chemically distinct binding sites demonstrate enhanced catalytic properties in comparison to monometallic or symmetric analogues.

Steering competitive N2 and CO adsorption toward efficient urea production with a confined dual site

Electrocatalytic urea synthesis under mild conditions via the nitrogen (N2) and carbon monoxide (CO) coupling represents an ideal and green alternative to the energy-intensive traditional synthetic protocol. However, this process is challenging due to the more favorable CO adsorption than N2 at the catalytic site, making the formation of the key urea precursor (*NCON) extremely difficult. Herein, we theoretically construct a spatially isolated dual-site (DS) catalyst with the confinement effect to manipulate the competitive CO and N2 adsorption, which successfully guarantees the dominant horizontal N2 adsorption and subsequent efficient *NCON formation via C-N coupling and achieves efficient urea synthesis. Among all the computationally evaluated candidates, the catalyst with dual V sites anchored on 4N-doped graphene (DS-VN4) stands out and shows a moderate energy barrier for C-N coupling and a low theoretical limiting potential of -0.50 V for urea production, which simultaneously suppresses the ammonia production and hydrogen evolution. The confined dual-site introduced in this computational work has the potential to not only properly address part of the challenges toward efficient urea electrosynthesis from CO and N2 but also provide an elegant theoretical strategy for fine-tuning the strength of chemical bonds to achieve a rational catalyst design.

Effects of tuning the structural symmetry of cobalt porphyrin on electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reactions

Metalloporphyrins have attracted significant attention as highly promising alternatives to Pt-based electrocatalysts in the realm of oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs). While the structure of porphyrin is widely recognized as a pivotal factor influencing the ORR performance, the impact of molecular symmetry, which is one of the key properties of the molecular structure, has rarely been understood and its effects remain largely unexplored. Herein, we designed and synthesized two triphenylamine (TPA)-substituted cobalt porphyrins, the asymmetric aBz-TCoP and the symmetric Bz-2TCoP, which are doped onto carbon black to construct composite catalysts for ORRs. The electronic structures of both porphyrins are determined through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and the morphology and electronic states of the composites are examined by spectroscopic techniques. A series of electrochemical measurements demonstrate the superior activity, selectivity and durability of Bz-2TCoP/C to aBz-TCoP/C in ORRs conducted in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. The improved ORR properties of the symmetric porphyrin may stem from the steric properties rather than the electronic properties of the chemical structure. This work represents a preliminary study on the effects of porphyrin structural symmetry on electrocatalysis and provides a potential strategy for further structural modifications of metalloporphyrins, as non-noble metal electrocatalysts, to enhance the ORR performance.

On the Dynamic Behavior of Pacman Phosphanes─A Case of Cooperativity and Redox Isomerism

In solution, the Pacman chlorophosphane (2Cl) shows fast exchange of the endo/exo-orientation of the two P-Cl bonds in the molecule featuring cooperativity. Experimental and quantum mechanical investigations of the inversion on the phosphorus(III) centers reveal a crucial role of chloride ions in the dynamic process. To confirm the results, the homologous Pacman halogen-phosphanes 2X were prepared by halogen exchange reactions (X = F, Br, and I). Besides accelerated dynamic behavior for the heavier analogues, significant differences in the molecular structure are caused by the halogen exchange reactions, including the formation of an endo-endo substituted Pacman fluorophosphane as well as dicationic species by phosphorus halogen bond dissociation. The latter process can be regarded as redox isomerism since two P^III atoms in 2X become P^V centers in the dications.

Control of spin coupling through a redox-active bridge in a dinickel(II) porphyrin dimer: step-wise oxidations enable isolations of a chlorin-porphyrin heterodimer and a dication diradical with a singlet ground state

A dinickel(II)porphyrin dimer has been used here in which the redox-active pyrrole-moiety, similar to the tryptophan residue in diheme enzymes such as MauG and bCcP, has been placed between two Ni(II)porphyrin centers connected via a flexible, but unconjugated methylene bridge. This arrangement provides a large physical separation between the two metal centers and thus displays almost no communication between them through the bridge. Upon treatment with DDQ as an oxidant, the dinickel(II) porphyrin dimer slowly gets converted into an indolizinium-fused chlorin-porphyrin heterodimer. However, oxidations of the dinickel(II) porphyrin dimer up to two oxidizing equivalents using oxidants such as AgSbF₆ and FeCl₃ resulted in the formation of a dication diradical complex. Interestingly, in order to stabilize such a highly oxidized dication diradical, two non-conjugated methylene spacers undergo facile 2e^-/-2H⁺ oxidation to make the bridge fully π-conjugated for promoting through-bond communication. Through the oxidized and conjugated bridge, two porphyrin π-cation radicals display considerable communications leading to an efficient intramolecular spin coupling to form a singlet state. Interestingly, the redox-active nature of the bridge controls the electronic communication just by simple oxidation or reduction, and thereby, acts as a molecular switch for efficient magnetic relay.

Highly Oxidized Cobalt Porphyrin Dimer: Control of Spin Coupling via a Bridge

A cobalt porphyrin dimer is constructed in which two Co(II)porphyrins are connected covalently through a redox-active diethylpyrrole moiety via a flexible but "nonconjugated" methylene bridge. Upon oxidation with even a mild oxidant such as iodine, each cobalt(II) center and porphyrin ring undergo 1e^- oxidation, leading to the formation of a 4e^--oxidized cobalt(III)porphyrin dication diradical complex. Other oxidants such as Cl₂ and Br₂ also produce similar results. To stabilize such highly oxidized dication diradicals, the "nonconjugated" methylene spacer undergoes a facile and spontaneous oxidation to form a methine group with a drastic structural change, thereby making the bridge fully π-conjugated and enabling through-bond communication. This results in a strong spin coupling between two π-cation radicals which stabilizes the singlet state. The experimental observations are also strongly supported by extensive density functional theory calculations. The present study highlights the crucial role played by the nature of the bridge in the long-range electronic communication.

A Phosphorus-Based Pacman Dication Generated by Cooperative Self-Activation of a Pacman Phosphane

Formal coordination of phosphorus(III) by a calix[4]pyrrole Schiff base ligand was achieved through the reaction of this ligand with PCl₃ under basic conditions. The reaction product adopts a Pacman conformation with two P-Cl moieties, one in exo and one in endo position. It represents the first non-metal compound of calix[4]pyrrole Schiff base ligands and of Pacman ligands in general. The spatial neighborhood of the two phosphorus atoms enables cooperative reactions. As a first example, the chloride abstraction with AgOTf is presented, yielding a macrocyclic dication with two embedded phosphorus(III) monocations, which both undergo a cooperative, internal activation reaction with an adjacent C=N double bond. This intramolecular redox process affords two pentacoordinated phosphorus(V) centers within the Pacman dication. All reaction products were fully characterized and all results are supported by computations.

Ferromagnetic Coupling in Oxidovanadium(IV)-Porphyrin Radical Dimers

Three different oxidovanadium(IV) porphyrin dimers with anti, cis, and trans arrangements of the two rings have been synthesized by changing the bridge between the porphyrin macrocycles. This provides a unique opportunity to investigate the role of the bridge and spatial arrangement between the two V^IVO centers for their electronic communication and magnetic coupling. They were characterized by the combined application of XRD analysis, UV-vis and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, magnetic susceptibility, and DFT calculations. One- and two-electron oxidations produce mono- and dication diradical species, respectively, which display an unusual ferromagnetic interaction between the unpaired spins of vanadium(IV) and porphyrin π-cation radical, in contrast to other metalloporphyrin dimers. The oxidized species show a dissimilar behavior between cis and trans isomers. The ferromagnetic coupling occurs between the porphyrin π-cation radical and the unpaired electron of the V^IVO ion on the d_xy orbital, orthogonal to the porphyrin-based molecular orbitals a_1u and a_2u.

Through Bridge Spin Coupling in Homo- and Heterobimetallic Porphyrin Dimers upon Stepwise Oxidations: A Spectroscopic and Theoretical Investigation

We have described copper(II)-iron(III) and copper(II)-manganese(III) heterobimetallic porphyrin dimers and compared them with the corresponding homobimetallic analogs. UV-visible spectra are very distinct in the heterometallic species while electrochemical studies demonstrate that these species, as compared to the homobimetallic analog, are much easier to oxidize. Combined Mössbauer, EPR, NMR, magnetic and UV-visible spectroscopic studies show that upon 2e-oxidation of the heterobimetallic complexes only ring-centered oxidation occurs. The energy differences between HOMO and LUMO are linearly dependent with the low-energy NIR band obtained for the 2e-oxidized complexes. Also, strong electronic communication between two porphyrin rings through the bridge facilitates coupling between various unpaired spins present while the coupling model depends on the nature of metal ions used. While unpaired spins of Fe(III) and the porphyrin π-cation radical are strongly antiferromagnetically coupled, such coupling is rather weak between Mn(III) and a porphyrin π-cation radical. Moreover, the coupling between two π-cation radicals are much stronger in the 2e-oxidized complexes of dimanganese(III) and copper(II)-manganese(III) porphyrin dimers as compared to their diiron(III) and copper(II)-iron(III) analogs. Furthermore, coupling between the unpaired spins of a π-cation radical and copper(II) is much stronger in the 2e-oxidized complex of copper(II)-iron(III) porphyrin dimer as compared to its copper(II)-manganese(III) analog. The Mulliken spin density distributions in 2e-oxidized homo- and heterobimetallic complexes show symmetric and asymmetric spread between the two macrocycles, respectively. In both the 2e-oxidized heterobimetallic complexes, the Cu(II) porphyrin center acts as a charge donor while Fe(III)/Mn(III) porphyrin center act as a charge acceptor. The experimental observations are also strongly supported by DFT calculations.

Stabilization and activation of molecular oxygen at biomimetic tetrapyrroles on surfaces: from UHV to near-ambient pressure

Recent advances in the development of surface science methods have allowed bridging, at least partially, the pressure gap between the ultra-high vacuum environment and some applicative conditions. This step has been particularly critical for the characterization of heterogenous catalytic systems (solid-liquid, solid-gas interfaces) and, specifically, of the electronic, structural, and chemical properties of tetrapyrroles at surfaces when arranged in 2D networks. Within a biomimetic picture, in which 2D metalorganic frameworks are expected to model and reproduce in a tailored way the activity of their biochemical proteic counterparts, the fundamental investigation of the adsorption and activation of small ligands at the single-metal atom reaction sites has progressively gained increasing attention. Concerning oxygen, biology offers a variety of tetrapyrrole-based transport and reaction pockets, as e.g. in haemoglobin, myoglobin or cytochrome proteins. Binding and activation of O2 are accomplished thanks to complex charge transfer and spin realignment processes, sometimes requiring cooperative mechanisms. Within the framework of surface science at near-ambient pressure (towards and beyond the mbar regime), recent progress has unveiled novel and interesting properties of 2D metalorganic frameworks and heterostacks based on self-assembled tetrapyrroles, thus opening possible, effective applicative routes in the fields of light harvesting, heterogenous (electro-)catalysts, chemical sensing, and spintronics.

Syntheses and solid-state structures of two cofacial (bis)dipyrrin dichromium complexes in different charge states

The dichromium Pacman complex (^tBudmx)Cr₂Cl₂·C₄H₁₀O (1) [(^tBudmx)H₂ is a dimethylxanthene-bridged cofacial (bis)dipyrrin, C₄₉H₅₈N₄O] was synthesized by salt metathesis using anhydrous CrCl₂ and previously reported (^tBudmx)K₂. Treatment of 1 with two equivalents of the reductant potassium graphite afforded K₂(^tBudmx)Cr₂Cl₂(thf)₃·0.5C₄H₁₀O·0.5C₄H₈O (thf is tetrahydrofuran, C₄H₈O) (2), with both potassium ions intercalated between the pyrrolic subunits. Comparison of the solid-state structures for 1 and 2 reveals minimal changes in the primary coordination sphere of each Cr ion, with notable elongation of the dipyrrin C-C and C-N bonds upon reduction, consistent with computational support for a ligand-based reduction.

Structural Determination of an Unusual CuI -Porphyrin-π-Bond in a Hetero-Pacman Cu-Zn-Complex

The synthesis and characterization of a hetero‐dinuclear compound is presented, in which a copper(I) trishistidine type coordination unit is positioned directly above a zinc porphyrin unit. The close distance between the two coordination fragments is secured by a rigid xanthene backbone, and a unique (intramolecular) copper porphyrin‐π‐bond was determined for the first time in the molecular structure. This structural motif was further analyzed by temperature‐dependent NMR studies: In solution at room temperature the coordinative bond fluctuates, while it can be frozen at low temperatures. Preliminary reactivity studies revealed a reduced reactivity of the copper(I) moiety towards dioxygen. The results adumbrate why nature is avoiding metal porphyrin‐π‐bonds by fixing reactive metal centers in a predetermined distance to each other within multimetallic enzymatic reaction centers.

N-Heterocyclic silylenes as ambiphilic activators and ligands

Recent developments of the use of N-heterocyclic silylenes (NHSis), higher homologues of Arduengo-carbenes, as ambiphilic activators and ligands are highlighted and a comparison of NHSi ligands with NHC and phosphine ligands is provided.

First principles studies of mononuclear and dinuclear Pacman complexes for electrocatalytic reduction of CO2

An iron-containing Pacman complex exhibited high activity and selectivity for the reduction of CO₂ to CH₄.

Tetrasubstituted Selenophenes from the Stepwise Assembly of Molecular Fragments on a Diiron Frame and Final Cleavage of a Bridging Alkylidene

A series of 2,3-dicarboxylato-5-acetyl-4-aminoselenophenes, 5a–j, was obtained via the uncommon assembly of building blocks on a diiron platform, starting from commercial [Fe₂Cp₂(CO)₄] through the stepwise formation of diiron complexes [2a–d]CF₃SO₃, 3a–d, and 4a–j. The selenophene-substituted bridging alkylidene ligand in 4a–j is removed from coordination upon treatment with water in air under mild conditions (ambient temperature in most cases), affording 5a–j in good to excellent yields. This process is highly selective and is accompanied by the disruption of the organometallic scaffold: cyclopentadiene (CpH) and lepidocrocite (γ-FeO(OH)) were identified by NMR and Raman analyses at the end of one representative reaction. The straightforward cleavage of the linkage between a bridging Fischer alkylidene and two (or more) metal centers, as observed here, is an unprecedented reaction in organometallic chemistry: in the present case, the carbene function is converted to a ketone which is incorporated into the organic product. DFT calculations and electrochemical experiments were carried out to give insight into the release of the selenophene-alkylidene ligand. Compounds 5a–j were fully characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, IR, and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and by X-ray diffraction and cyclic voltammetry in one case.

Metal−metal cooperativity in action! Different fragments are combined on the {Fe₂Cp₂(CO)₂} skeleton to give highly functionalized selenophene ligands, linked to the iron centers through a bridging alkylidene, which is easily removed from coordination by exposure to air/water in ethereal solution.

Examination of the Magneto-Structural Effects of Hangman Groups on Ferric Porphyrins by EPR

Ferric hangman porphyrins are bioinspired models for haem hydroperoxidase enzymes featuring an acid/base group in close vicinity to the metal center, which results in improved catalytic activity for reactions requiring O-O bond activation. These functional biomimics are examined herein with a combination of EPR techniques to determine the effects of the hanging group on the electronics of the ferric center. These results are compared to those for ferric octaethylporphyrin chloride [Fe(OEP)Cl], tetramesitylporphyrin chloride [Fe(TMP)Cl], and the pentafluorophenyl derivative [Fe(TPFPP)Cl], which were also examined herein to study the electronic effects of various substituents. Frequency-domain Fourier-transform THz-EPR combined with field domain EPR in a broad frequency range from 9.5 to 629 GHz allowed the determination of zero-field splitting parameters, revealing minor rhombicity E/D and D values in a narrow range of 6.24(8) to 6.85(5) cm^-1. Thus, the hangman porphyrins display D values in the expected range for ferric porphyrin chlorides, though D appears to be correlated with the Fe-Cl bond length. Extrapolating this trend to the ferric hangman porphyrin chlorides, for which no crystal structure has been reported, indicates a slightly elongated Fe-Cl bond length compared to the non-hangman equivalent.

Anticancer Potential of Diiron Vinyliminium Complexes

Although ferrocene derivatives have attracted considerable attention as possible anticancer agents, the medicinal potential of diiron complexes has remained largely unexplored. Herein, we describe the straightforward multigram-scale synthesis and the antiproliferative activity of a series of diiron cyclopentadienyl complexes containing bridging vinyliminium ligands. IC₅₀ values in the low-to-mid micromolar range were determined against cisplatin sensitive and resistant human ovarian carcinoma (A2780 and A2780cisR) cell lines. Notable selectivity towards the cancerous cells lines compared to the non-tumoral human embryonic kidney (HEK-293) cell line was observed for selected compounds. The activity seems to be multimodal, involving reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and, in some cases, a fragmentation process to afford monoiron derivatives. The large structural variability, amphiphilic character and good stability in aqueous media of the diiron vinyliminium complexes provide favorable properties compared to other widely studied classes of iron-based anticancer candidates.

Synthesis of a tethered dibenzotetramethyltetraaza[14]annulene macrocycle and the di-nickel(ii) derivative

Selective reaction of 2,6-isophthaloyl chloride at the methine positions of two dibenzotetramethyltetraaza[14]annulene (tmtaa) units results in tethering of the macrocycles by either one or two 2,6-isophthaloyl bridging groups.
