Experimental Evaluation of (L)Au Electron‐Donor Ability in Cationic Gold Carbene Complexes

Cationic Bis(Gold) Indenyl Complexes

Reaction of (P)AuOTf [P=P(t-Bu)2o-biphenyl] with indenyl- or 3-methylindenyl lithium led to isolation of gold η1-indenyl complexes (P)Au(η1-inden-1-yl) (1 a) and (P)Au(η1-3-methylinden-1-yl) (1 b), respectively, in >65 % yield. Whereas complex 1 b is static, complex 1 a undergoes facile, degenerate 1,3-migration of gold about the indenyl ligand (ΔG≠ 153K=9.1±1.1 kcal/mol). Treatment of complexes 1 a and 1 b with (P)AuNTf2 led to formation of the corresponding cationic bis(gold) indenyl complexes trans-[(P)Au]2(η1,η1-inden-1,3-yl) (2 a) and trans-[(P)Au]2(η1,η2-3-methylinden-1-yl) (2 b), respectively, which were characterized spectroscopically and modeled computationally. Despite the absence of aurophilic stabilization in complexes 2 a and 2 b, the binding affinity of mono(gold) complex 1 a toward exogenous (P)Au+ exceed that of free indene by ~350-fold and similarly the binding affinity of 1 b toward exogenous (P)Au+ exceed that of 3-methylindene by ~50-fold. The energy barrier for protodeauration of bis(gold) indenyl complex 2 a with HOAc was ≥8 kcal/mol higher than for protodeauration of mono(gold) complex 1 a.

A Luminescent Two-Coordinate AuI Bimetallic Complex with a Tandem-Carbene Structure: A Molecular Design for the Enhancement of TADF Radiative Decay Rate

A luminescent bimetallic Au^I complex comprised of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and carbazole (Cz) ligands, that is, (NHC')Au(NHC)AuCz has been synthesized and studied. Both carbene ligands in the bimetallic complex act as electron acceptors in tandem to increase the energy separation between the ground and excited state, which is higher than those found in either monometallic analogue, (NHC)AuCz and (NHC')AuCz. A coplanar geometry designed into the tandem complex ensures sufficient electronic coupling between the π-orbitals of the ligands to impart a strong oscillator strength to the singlet intra-ligand charge-transfer (¹ ICT) transition. Theoretical modelling indicates that the emissive ICT excited state involves both NHC ligands. The tandem complex gives blue luminescence (λ_max =480 nm) with a high photoluminescent quantum yield (Φ_PL =0.80) with a short decay lifetime (τ=0.52 μs). Temperature-dependent photophysical studies indicate that emission is via thermally assisted delayed fluorescence (TADF) and give a small singlet-triplet energy difference (ΔE_ST =50 meV, 400 cm^-1 ) consistent with the short TADF lifetime.

Oxyacylation of Iodoalkynes: Gold(I)-Catalyzed Expeditious Access to Benzofurans

(Acetonitrile)[1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazole-2-ylidene] gold(I) catalyzes the cycloisomerization of 2-(iodoethynyl)aryl esters to give 3-iodo-2-acyl benzofurans. This catalytic transformation is the result of an unprecedented selective synthetic event, which comprises a [1,2]-iodine shift, a C-O ring-closure step, and a C-C bond-formation that installs the ketone functionality into the new ring. Experimental evidence supports the involvement of a β-iodo-substituted gold vinylidene as the intermediate species. The reaction tolerates different substitution patterns at the phenol moiety and a wide diversity of groups at the carboxylic fragment, including not only alkyl but also alkenyl, aryl, and heteroaryl groups.

Gold Difluorocarbenoid Complexes: Spectroscopic and Chemical Profiling

Gold carbenes of the general type [LAu=CR₂ ]⁺ are sufficiently long-lived for spectroscopic inspection only if the substituents compensate for the largely missing stabilization of the carbene center by the [LAu]⁺ fragment. π-Donation by two fluorine substituents (R=F) is insufficient; rather, difluorocarbene complexes are so deprived in electron density that they sequester even "weakly coordinating" anions such as triflate or triflimide. This particular bonding situation translates into unmistakable carbenium ion chemistry upon reaction with stilbene as a model substrate.

Bond dissociation energies of carbonyl gold complexes: a new descriptor of ligand effects in gold(i) complexes?

Ligand electronic effects in gold(i) chemistry have been evaluated by means of the experimental determination of M-CO bond dissociation energies for 16 [L-Au-CO]⁺ complexes, bearing L ligands widely used in gold catalysis. Energy-resolved analyses have been made using tandem mass spectrometry with collision-induced dissociation. Coupled with DFT calculations, this approach enables the quantification of ligand effects based on the LAu-CO bond strength. A further energy decomposition analysis gives access to detailed insights into this bond's characteristics. Whereas small differences are observed between phosphine- and phosphite-containing gold complexes, carbene ligands are shown to stabilize the gold-carbonyl bond much more efficiently.

Two Amphoteric Silver Carbene Clusters

Two highly labile silver carbene cluster complexes are described, which are unique in that they mark the transition point at which the carbene center transmutes from a fairly common NHC-like nucleophilic behavior to an electrophilic character befitting reactive silver carbene intermediates of relevance in various catalytic transformations. This amphoteric character is the distinguishing attribute of a μ-bridged donor/donor carbene entity that connects two silver atoms of triangular or tetrahedral metallic core units.
