Room Temperature Decarboxylative and Oxidative [2+2+2] Annulation of Benzoic Acids with Alkynes Catalyzed by an Electron‐Deficient Rhodium(III) Complex

Ruthenium-catalysed decarboxylative unsymmetric dual ortho-/meta-C-H bond functionalization of arenecarboxylic acids

Here, we describe a ruthenium-catalysed decarboxylative unsymmetric ortho-C-H azaarylation/meta-C-H alkylation via a traceless directing group relay strategy. The installation of a 2-pyridyl functionality via carboxyl directed ortho-C-H activation is critical to promote decarboxylation and enable meta-C-H bond alkylation to streamline the synthesis of 4-azaaryl-benzo-fused five-membered heterocycles. This protocol is characterized by high regio- and chemoselectivity, broad substrate scopes, and good functional group tolerance under redox-neutral conditions.

Cu(II)-Catalyzed Decarboxylative (4 + 2) Annulation of Coumarin-3-Carboxylic Acids with In Situ Generated α,β-Unsaturated Carbonyl Compounds from tert-Propargylic Alcohols

Cu(II)-catalyzed decarboxylative oxidative (4 + 2) annulation of coumarin-3-carboxylic acids with tert-propargylic alcohols, via the in situ generated α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds by the Meyer-Schuster rearrangement, has been developed. This protocol involving indirect C-H functionalization offers access to diverse naphthochromenone architectures with good to excellent yields.

Oxidative [4 + 2] annulation of 1-naphthols with alkynes accelerated by an electron-deficient rhodium(III) catalysts

The 1,3-diethoxycarbonyl-2,4,5-trimethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp^E) rhodium(III) complex displayed high efficacy in the catalytic oxidative annulation of 1-naphthols with internal alkynes under mild conditions. DFT calculations revealed that lower activation energies for the concerted metalation-deprotonation and the reductive elimination steps are the key to improved reactivity.

Easy Access to Versatile Catalytic Systems for C-H Activation and Reductive Amination Based on Tetrahydrofluorenyl Rhodium(III) Complexes

On the basis of the 1,2,3,4-tetrahydrofluorenyl ligand, a simple approach was developed to new effective rhodium catalysts for the construction of C-C and C-N bonds. The halide compounds [(η⁵ -tetrahydrofluorenyl)RhX₂ ]₂ (2 a: X=Br; 2 b: X=I) were synthesized by treatment of the bis(ethylene) derivative (η⁵ -tetrahydrofluorenyl)Rh(C₂ H₄ )₂ (1 a) with halogens. An analogous reaction of the cyclooctadiene complex (η⁵ -tetrahydrofluorenyl)Rh(cod) (1 b) with I₂ is complicated by the side formation of [(cod)RhI]₂ . The reaction of 2 b with 2,2'-bipyridyl leads to cation [(η⁵ -tetrahydrofluorenyl)Rh(2,2'-bipyridyl)I]⁺ (3). The halide abstraction from 2 a,b with thallium or silver salts allowed us to prepare sandwich compounds with incoming cyclopentadienyl, dicarbollide and mesityleneligands [(η⁵ -tetrahydrofluorenyl)RhCp]⁺ (4), (η⁵ -tetrahydrofluorenyl)Rh(η-7,8-C₂ B₉ H₁₁ ) (5), and [(η⁵ -tetrahydrofluorenyl)Rh(η-mesitylene)]²⁺ (6). The structures of 1 b, 2 b ⋅ 2I₂ , 3PF₆ , 4TlI₄ , 5, and [(cod)RhI]₂ were determined by X-ray diffraction. Compounds 2 a,b efficiently catalyze the oxidative coupling of benzoic acids with alkynes to selectively give isocoumarins or naphthalenes, depending on the reaction temperature. Moreover, they showed moderate catalytic activity in other annulations of alkynes with aromatic compounds (such as benzamide, acetanilide, etc.) which proceed through CH activation. Compound 2 b also effectively catalyzes the reductive amination of aldehydes and ketones in the presence of carbon monoxide and water via water-gas shift reaction, giving amines in high yields (67-99 %).

Gold-Catalyzed Annulation of 1,8-Dialkynylnaphthalenes: Synthesis and Photoelectric Properties of Indenophenalene-Based Derivatives

A simple gold-catalyzed annulation of 1,8-dialkynylnaphthalenes utilizing a cationic gold catalyst was developed. Such a peri-position of two alkynyl substituents has not been studied in gold catalysis before. Dependent on the substrate, the reactions either follow a mechanism involving vinyl cation intermediates or involve a dual gold catalysis mechanism which in an initial 6-endo-dig-cyclization generates gold(I) vinylidene intermediates that are able to insert into C-H bonds. Indenophenalene derivatives were obtained in moderate to high yields. In addition, the bidirectional gold-catalyzed annulation of tetraynes provided even larger conjugated π-systems. The optoelectronic properties of the products were also investigated.

Rhodium-Catalyzed ortho-Bromination of O-Phenyl Carbamates Accelerated by a Secondary Amide-Pendant Cyclopentadienyl Ligand

It has been established that a newly developed cyclopentadienyl rhodium(III) [Cp^A Rh^III ] complex, bearing an acidic secondary amide moiety on the Cp ring, is able to catalyze the ortho-bromination of O-phenyl carbamates with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) at room temperature. The presence of the acidic secondary amide moiety on the Cp^A ligand accelerates the bromination by the hydrogen bond between the acidic NH group of the Cp^A ligand and the carbonyl group of NBS.

Rhodium-Catalyzed ortho-Olefination of Sterically Demanding Benzamides: Application to the Asymmetric Synthesis of Axially Chiral Benzamides

It has been established that an unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl rhodium(III) (CpRh^III ) complex is a highly active catalyst for the aerobic oxidative ortho C-H bond olefination of sterically demanding ortho-substituted benzamides with alkenes. This catalysis was successfully applied to the diastereoselective synthesis of axially chiral N,N-dialkylbenzamides. The combination of the ruthenium(II)-catalyzed enantioselective hydrogenation and the CpRh^III -catalyzed diastereoselective ortho C-H bond olefination enabled the asymmetric synthesis of axially chiral N,N-dialkylbenzamide derivatives with high ee values.

One-Pot Generation of Functionalized Benzynes from Readily Available 2-Hydroxyphenylboronic Acids

We developed a one-pot method for the generation of benzynes from a range of readily available 2-hydroxyphenylboronic acids. This method features the in situ activation of both boronic acid and hydroxyl groups of the substrate to enhance benzyne generation at 60 °C. Such mild conditions facilitate the generation of functionalized benzynes that immediately react with diverse arynophiles to produce multisubstituted fused benzenes.

Effect of Cp-Ligand Methylation on Rhodium(III)-Catalyzed Annulations of Aromatic Carboxylic Acids with Alkynes: Synthesis of Isocoumarins and PAHs for Organic Light-Emitting Devices

An efficient protocol was developed for the synthesis of π-extended isocoumarins and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons based on the oxidative coupling of aromatic carboxylic acids with internal alkynes catalyzed by (cyclopentadienyl)rhodium complexes. The coupling chemoselectivity strongly depends on whether Cp or the methylated Cp* ligands are used. The pentamethyl derivative [Cp*RhCl₂ ]₂ predominantly gives isocoumarins, while the non-methylated complex [CpRhI₂ ]_n produces naphthalene derivatives. The polyaromatic carboxylic acids (such as 1-naphthoic acid, 1-pyrenecarboxylic acid, fluorene-1-carboxylic acid, and dibenzofuran-4-carboxylic acid) are suitable for this approach. A mixture of Cp*H/RhCl₃ can be used as a catalyst instead of [Cp*RhCl₂ ]₂ . The structures of 3,4-diphenylindeno[1,2-h]isochromen-1(11H)-one and 7,10-dimethyl-8,9-diphenylbenzo[pqr]tetraphene were determined by X-ray diffraction. In addition, the optical properties of the prepared compounds were studied. 7,8-Diphenyl-10H-phenaleno[1,9-gh]isochromen-10-one was employed as an emissive layer for OLED manufacturing. The OLED emits yellow-green light with a maximum intensity 1740 cd ⋅ m^-2 at 15 V.

Formal Lossen Rearrangement/Alkenylation or Annulation Cascade of Heterole Carboxamides with Alkynes Catalyzed by CpRhIII Complexes with Pendant Amides

It has been established that a cyclopentadienyl (Cp) Rh^III complex with two aryl groups and a pendant amide moiety catalyzes the formal Lossen rearrangement/alkenylation cascade of N-pivaloyl heterole carboxamides with internal alkynes, leading to alkenylheteroles. Interestingly, the use of sterically demanding internal alkynes afforded not the alkenylation but the [3+2] annulation products ([5,5]-fused heteroles). In these reactions, the pendant amide moiety of the CpRh^III complex may accelerate the formal Lossen rearrangement. The use of five-membered heteroles may deter reductive elimination to form strained [5,5]-fused heteroles; instead, protonation proceeds to give the alkenylation products. Bulky alkyne substituents accelerate the reductive elimination to allow the formation of the [5,5]-fused heteroles.

Group 4 Diarylmetallocenes as Bespoke Aryne Precursors for Titanium-Catalyzed [2 + 2 + 2] Cycloaddition of Arynes and Alkynes

Despite the ubiquity of reports describing titanium (Ti)-catalyzed [2 + 2 + 2] cyclotrimerization of alkynes, the incorporation of arynes into this potent manifold has never been reported. The in situ generation of arynes often requires fluoride, which instead will react with the highly fluorophilic Ti center, suppressing productive catalysis. Herein, we describe the use of group 4 diarylmetallocenes, Cp^R₂MAr₂ (Cp^R = C₅H₅, C₅Me₅; M = Ti, Zr), as aryne precursors for the Ti-catalyzed synthesis of substituted naphthalenes via coupling with 2 equiv of an alkyne. Fair-to-good yields of the desired naphthalene products could be obtained with 1% catalyst loadings, which is roughly an order of magnitude lower than similar reactions catalyzed by palladium or nickel. Additionally, naphthalenes find broad applications in the electronics, photovoltaics, and pharmaceutical industries, urging the discovery of more economic syntheses. These results indicate that aryne transfer from a Cp^R₂M(η²-aryne) complex to another metal is a viable route for the introduction of aryne fragments into organometallic catalytic processes.

Synthesis of Multisubstituted 1-Naphthoic Acids via Ru-Catalyzed C-H Activation and Double-Alkyne Annulation under Air

An efficient [2 + 2 + 2] benzannulation of phthalic acids/anhydrides with two alkynes was developed for synthesis of multisubstituted 1-naphthoic acids via Ru-catalyzed C-H activation. The reaction preceded well using atmospheric oxygen as the sole oxidant with high atom/step economies. Facilitated by the free carboxyl group, the products can be easily converted to diverse polycyclic molecules.

Rhodium-Catalyzed [2+1+2+1] Cycloaddition of Benzoic Acids with Diynes through Decarboxylation and C≡C Triple Bond Cleavage

It has been established that an electron-deficient cyclopentadienyl rhodium(III) (Cp^E Rh^III ) complex catalyzes the oxidative and decarboxylative [2+1+2+1] cycloaddition of benzoic acids with diynes through C≡C triple bond cleavage, leading to fused naphthalenes. This cyclotrimerization is initiated by directed ortho C-H bond cleavage of a benzoic acid, and the subsequent regioselective alkyne insertion and decarboxylation produce a five-membered rhodacycle. The electron-deficient nature of the Cp^E Rh^III complex promotes reductive elimination giving a cyclobutadiene-rhodium(I) complex rather than the second intermolecular alkyne insertion. The oxidative addition of the thus generated cyclobutadiene to rhodium(I) (formal C≡C triple bond cleavage) followed by the second intramolecular alkyne insertion and reductive elimination give the corresponding [2+1+2+1] cycloaddition product. The synthetic utility of the present [2+1+2+1] cycloaddition was demonstrated in the facile synthesis of a donor-acceptor [5]helicene and a hemi-hexabenzocoronene by a combination with the chemoselective Scholl reaction.

Aerobic Oxidative Olefination of Benzamides with Styrenes Catalyzed by a Moderately Electron-Deficient CpRh(III) Complex with a Pendant Amide

It has been established that a newly developed moderately electron-deficient cyclopentadienyl (Cp)-Rh(III) complex, bearing ester and pendant amide moieties on the Cp ring [Cp^ARh(III)], is able to catalyze the aerobic oxidative olefination of benzamides, bearing nonspecial carbamoyl groups, with styrenes including disubstituted ones at relatively low temperature (60-80 °C). The presence of both the ester and pendant acidic N-phenylcarbamoyl moieties on the Cp^A ligand play important roles in facilitation of the catalysis without sacrificing thermal stability of the complex.

One-pot synthesis of pyranoquinolin-1-ones via Rh(iii)-catalysed redox annulation of 3-carboxyquinolines and alkynes

A highly efficient and simple one-pot procedure to synthesize 3,4-dihydro-pyrano[4,3-b]quinolin-1-ones via Rh(iii)-catalysed [4 + 2] redox annulation of 3-carboxyquinolines with internal alkynes.

[2+2+2] Annulation of N-(1-Naphthyl)acetamide with Two Alkynoates via Cleavage of Adjacent C⁻H and C⁻N Bonds Catalyzed by an Electron-Deficient Rhodium(III) Complex

It has been established that an electron-deficient cationic Cp^E-rhodium(III) complex catalyzes the non-oxidative [2+2+2] annulation of N-(1-naphthyl)acetamide with two alkynoates via cleavage of the adjacent C–H and C–N bonds to give densely substituted phenanthrenes under mild conditions (at 40 °C under air). In this reaction, a dearomatized spiro compound was isolated, which may support the formation of a cationic spiro rhodacycle intermediate in the catalytic cycle. The use of N-(1-naphthyl)acetamide in place of acetanilide switched the reaction pathway from the oxidative [2+2+2] annulation-lactamization via C–H/C–H cleavage to the non-oxidative [2+2+2] annulation via C–H/C–N cleavage. This chemoselectivity switch may arise from stabilization of the carbocation in the above cationic spiro rhodacycle by the neighboring phenyl and acetylamino groups, resulting in the nucleophilic C–C bond formation followed by β-nitrogen elimination.
