Directed Self-Assembly, Symmetry Breaking, and Electronic Modulation of Metal Oxide Clusters by Pyramidal Heteroanions

When Identification of the Reduction Sites in Mixed Molybdenum/Tungsten Keggin-Type Polyoxometalate Hybrids Turns Out Tricky

The mixed molybdenum/tungsten Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) hybrid (TBA)4[PW9Mo2O39{Sn(C6H4I)}] (TBA = tert-butylammonium) has been prepared by the reaction between [α-PW9Mo2O39]7- and [Cl3Sn(C6H4I)] in dried acetonitrile, in the presence of tetra-n-butylammonium bromide. A further coupling reaction affords the ferrocenyl derivative (TBA)4[PW9Mo2O39{Sn(C6H4)C≡C(C6H4)Fc}]. The POM hybrids have been thoroughly characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopies. Electrochemical analysis confirms their ease of reduction compared to the all-W analogue, albeit with a second reduction process occurring at a lower potential than in the all-Mo species. It is noteworthy that the second reduction is accompanied by an unusual red shift of the electronic absorption spectrum. Whereas there is no doubt that the first reduction deals with Mo, the location of the second electron in the bireduced species, on the second Mo or on W, has thus been the subject of a cross-investigation by spectroelectrochemistry, electron spin resonance, and theoretical calculations. Finally, it came out that the second reduction is also Mo-centered with two unpaired and antiferromagnetically coupled extra electrons.

The role of mono- and dicarboxylic acids in the building of oxomolybdates containing {MoO4}, {Mo2O5}, {Mo2O6}, {Mo3O8}, {Mo5O17}, {Mo5O18}, {Mo8O26}, and {SiMo12O40} units

We describe the impact of mono- and dicarboxylic acids on the formation of polyoxomolybdates of different nuclearities, such as {Mo5O17}, {Mo5O18}, {Mo8O26}, and {SiMo12O40}.

Reactions of [Ru(NO)Cl5]2- with pseudotrilacunary {XW9O33}9- (X = AsIII, SbIII) anions

Reactions of [Ru(NO)Cl₅]^2- with pseudotrivacant B-α-[XW₉O₃₃]^9- (X = As^III, Sb^III) at 160 °C result in the rearrangement of polyoxometalate backbones into {XM₁₈} structures. In the case of arsenic, oxidation of As^III to As^V takes place with the formation of a mixture of plenary and monosubstituted Dawson [As₂W₁₈O₆₂]^6- and [As₂W₁₇Ru(NO)O₆₁]^7- anions, of which the latter was isolated as Me₂NH₂⁺ (DMA-1a and DMA-1b) and Bu₄N⁺ (Bu₄N-1) salts and fully characterized. Both α₁ and α₂ isomers of [As₂W₁₇Ru(NO)O₆₁]^7- were present in the reaction mixture; pure [α₂-As₂W₁₇Ru(NO)O₆₁]^7- was isolated as the Bu₄N⁺ salt. In the case of antimony, [SbW₉O₃₃]^9- is converted into a mixture of [SbW₁₈O₆₀]^9- and [SbW₁₇{Ru(NO)}O₅₉]^10-. The formation of trisubstituted [SbW₁₅{Ru(NO)}₃O₅₇]^12- as a minor byproduct was detected by HPLC-ICP-AES. The monosubstituted [SbW₁₇{Ru(NO)}O₅₉]^10- anion was isolated as DMAH⁺ (DMA-2) and mixed inorganic cation (CsKNa-2) salts and characterized by XRD, HPLC-ICP-AES, EA and TGA techniques. X-ray analysis shows the presence of the {Ru(NO)}-group in the 6-membered ("equatorial") belt of the Sb-free hemisphere. The experimental findings were confirmed and interpreted by means of quantum chemical calculations.

Self-Assembly in Polyoxometalate and Metal Coordination-Based Systems: Synthetic Approaches and Developments

Utilizing new experimental approaches and gradual understanding of the underlying chemical processes has led to advances in the self-assembly of inorganic and metal–organic compounds at a very fast pace over the last decades. Exploitation of unveiled information originating from initial experimental observations has sparked the development of new families of compounds with unique structural characteristics and functionalities. The main source of inspiration for numerous research groups originated from the implementation of the design element along with the discovery of new chemical components which can self-assemble into complex structures with wide range of sizes, topologies and functionalities. Not only do self-assembled inorganic and metal–organic chemical systems belong to families of compounds with configurable structures, but also have a vast array of physical properties which reflect the chemical information stored in the various “modular” molecular subunits. The purpose of this short review article is not the exhaustive discussion of the broad field of inorganic and metal–organic chemical systems, but the discussion of some representative examples from each category which demonstrate the implementation of new synthetic approaches and design principles.
