Single-Ion Magnets with Giant Magnetic Anisotropy and Zero-Field Splitting

The design of mononuclear molecular nanomagnets exhibiting a huge energy barrier to the reversal of magnetization have seen a surge of interest during the last few decades due to their potential technological applications. More specifically, single-ion magnets are peculiarly attractive by virtue of their rich quantum behavior and distinct fine structure. These are viable candidates for implementation as single-molecule high-density information storage devices and other applications in future quantum technologies. The present review presents the comprehensive state of the art in the topic of single-ion magnets possessing an eminent magnetization-reversal barrier, very slow magnetic relaxation and high blocking temperature. We turn our attention to the achievements in the synthesis of 3d and 4f single-ion magnets during the last two decades and discuss the observed magnetostructural properties underlying the anisotropy behavior and the ensuing remanence. Furthermore, we highlight the fundamental theoretical aspects to shed light on the complex behavior of these nanosized magnetic entities. In particular, we focus on key notions, such as zero-field splitting, anisotropy energy and quantum tunneling of the magnetization and their interdependence.

Analyzing Anisotropic Exchange in a Pentanuclear Os2 Ni3 Complex

Spin Hamiltonian parameters of a pentanuclear Os2 III Ni3 II cyanometallate complex are derived from ab initio wave function based calculations, namely valence-type configuration interaction calculations with a complete active space including spin-orbit interaction (CASOCI) in a single-step procedure. While fits of experimental data performed so far could reproduce the data but the resulting parameters were not satisfactory, the parameters derived in the present work reproduce experimental data and at the same time have a reasonable size. The one-centre parameters (local g matrices and single-ion zero field splitting tensors) are within an expected range, the anisotropic exchange parameters obtained in this work for an Os-Ni pair are not exceedingly large but determine the low-T part of the experimental χT curve. Exchange interactions (both isotropic and anisotropic) obtained from CASOCI have to be scaled by a factor of 2.5 to obtain agreement with experiment, a known deficiency of such types of calculation. After scaling the parameters, the isotropic Os-Ni exchange coupling constant is J = - 4 . 2  cm-1 and the D parameter of the (nearly axial) anisotropic Os-Ni exchange is D = J ∥ - J ⊥ = 18 . 8 c m -1 , so anisotropic exchange is larger in absolute size than isotropic exchange. The negative value of the isotropic J (indicating antiferromagnetic coupling) seemingly contradicts the large-temperature behaviour of the temperature dependent susceptibility curve, but this is caused by the negative g value of the Os centres. This negative g value is a universal feature of a pseudo-octahedral coordination with t 2 g 5 configuration and strong spin-orbit interaction. Knowing the size of these exchange interactions is important because Os(CN)6 3 - is a versatile building block for the synthesis of 5 d / 3 d magnetic materials.

Hubbard Trimer with Spin-Orbit Coupling: Hartree-Fock Solutions, (Non)Collinearity, and Anisotropic Spin Hamiltonian

We present unrestricted and generalized Hartree-Fock solutions (UHF and GHF, respectively) for the single-band Hubbard model of an equilateral triangle. Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is treated self-consistently, and HF stability and properties of different spin structures are studied in detail. The GHF solution switches from noncollinear to collinear when crossing a high-symmetry point in parameter space (spanned by the amplitudes of spin-conserving and spin-dependent hopping, i.e., kinetic energy and SOC, respectively). The collinear GHF solution represents a simple example to disprove the notion that a collinear vector spin density in a Slater determinant necessarily entails a defined spin projection. Spin Hamiltonian parameters for the anisotropic interaction between three spin-1/2 centers are extracted from HF energies and subsequently compared to exact results from effective Hamiltonian theory. This provides an unambiguous benchmark for interpreting broken-symmetry mean-field solutions in terms of spin configurations and puts this semiclassical approach (frequently applied in broken-symmetry density functional theory) on a firmer basis.

Hyperfine tensors for a model system for the oxygen evolving complex of photosystem II: calculation of the anisotropy shift that occurs beyond the strong exchange limit

Broken-symmetry density functional calculations have been used to calculate effective ⁵⁵Mn hyperfine (A) tensors for a mixed-valence tetranuclear manganese complex, a model system for the S₂ state of the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II.
