One-Pot Synthesis of Functionalized Fused Furans via a BODIPY-Catalyzed Domino Photooxygenation

Photocatalytic Synthesis of para-Peroxyquinols: Total Synthesis of (±)-Stemenone B and (±)-Parvistilbine B

A photocatalytic method to selectively synthesize 4-hydroperoxy-2,5-cyclohexadienones from para-alkyl phenols is disclosed. This photosensitized singlet oxygen approach functionalized a variety of electronically diverse para-alkyl phenols in 27-99% isolated yields. Utilizing this dearomative oxidation, (±)-stemenone B and (±)-parvistilbine B were synthesized in 9 and 11 steps, respectively, from commercially available starting materials. Additional experiments revealed the dramatic influence of base and solvent on the selectivity while providing insight into the mechanism of this transformation.

Synthesis and Photophysical Characterizations of Pyrroloquinolone Photosensitizers for Singlet Oxygen Production

A series of pyrroloquinolone photosensitizers bearing different halogen substituents (Cl, Br, I) on the heterocyclic framework was studied. These structures were readily prepared through a multi-step synthetic sequence involving an oxidative protocol as an important step to access the quinolone framework. Spectroscopic characterizations and computational investigations were carried out to study the dyes before and after the oxidative step. Interestingly, the fluorescence emission was significantly reduced upon oxidation. In spite of a low photostability under UV light, the pyrroloquinolone photosensitizers proved effective to produce singlet oxygen. Higher singlet oxygen quantum yields were obtained with photosensitizers bearing halogen atoms with a higher atomic number.

Atom Economical Photocatalytic Oxidation of Phenols and Site-Selective Epoxidation Toward Epoxyquinols

The discovery of a multiple-bond-forming process merging the singlet oxygen-mediated dearomatization of 3,4-disubstitued phenols and diastereo- and regioselective epoxidation is described. This one-pot strategy using a transition metal-free multicatalytic system comprised of rose bengal and cesium carbonate allowed the efficient formation of functionalized epoxyquinol products under mild conditions. Mechanistic investigations have been performed to shed the light on the key species involved in this transformation.

Multicatalytic dearomatization of phenols into epoxyquinols via a photooxygenation process

A multicatalytic photooxygenation of substituted phenols in the presence of rose bengal and cesium carbonate under green LED light is reported. This transformation enabled the introduction of both atoms of singlet oxygen and led to the one-pot synthesis of epoxyquinols in a stereoselective way.

Photooxygenation of 2-propargylfurans: a path to structurally diverse nitrogen-containing 5-membered rings

The photooxygenation of 2-propargylfurans enabled access to original nitrogen-containing cyclopentenones and related compounds in a one-pot fashion. By employing readily-available substrates such as furans and amines, we succeeded in achieving a high degree of molecular complexity. Relying on the introduction of an alkyne moiety and tailored substrates, this transformation reveals a new facet for reaction sequences featuring the photooxygenation of furans.

In-flow photooxygenation of aminothienopyridinones generates iminopyridinedione PTP4A3 phosphatase inhibitors

A continuous flow photooxygenation of 7-aminothieno[3,2-c]pyridin-4(5H)-ones to produce 7-iminothieno[3,2-c]pyridine-4,6(5H,7H)-diones has been developed, utilizing ambient air as the sole reactant. N-H Imines are formed as the major products, and excellent functional group tolerance and conversion on gram-scale without the need for chromatographic purification allow for facile late-stage diversification of the aminothienopyridinone scaffold. Several analogs exhibit potent in vitro inhibition of the cancer-associated protein tyrosine phosphatase PTP4A3, and the SAR supports an exploratory docking model.

Chasing BODIPY: Enhancement of Luminescence in Homoleptic Bis(dipyrrinato) ZnII Complexes Utilizing Symmetric and Unsymmetrical Dipyrrins

Dipyrromethene metal complexes are fascinating molecules that have applications as light-harvesting systems, luminophores, and laser dyes. Recently, it has been shown that structurally rigid bis(dipyrrinato) zinc(II) complexes exhibit high fluorescence with comparable quantum yields to those of boron dipyrromethenes or BODIPYs. Herein, eight new bis(dipyrrinato) Zn^II complexes, obtained from symmetric and unsymmetrical functionalization of the dipyrromethene structure through a Knoevenagel reaction, are reported. It was possible not only to vary the maximum visible absorption from 490 to 630 nm, but also to enhance the emission quantum yield up to 66 %, which is extraordinarily high for homoleptic bis(dipyrrinato) zinc complexes. These results pave the way for designing highly luminescent bis(dipyrrinato) zinc complexes.
