Abstract
We report the catalytic synthesis of 3-hydroxy-2-butanon (acetoin) from acetaldehyde as a key step in the synthesis of C4-molecules from ethanol. Facile C-C bond formation at the α-carbon of the C2 building block is achieved using an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyst. The immobilization of the catalyst on a Merrifield's peptide resin and its spectroscopic characterisation using solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is described herein. The immobilization of the NHC catalyst allows for process intensification steps and the reported catalytic system was subjected to batch recycling as well as continuous flow experiments. The robustness of the catalytic system was shown over a maximum of 10 h time-on-stream. Overall, high selectivity S>90 % was observed. The observed deactivation of the catalyst with increasing time-on-stream is explained by ex-situ 1H solution-state, as well as 13C and 15N solid-state NMR spectra allowing us to develop a deeper understanding of the underlying decomposition mechanism of the catalyst.

Abstract
The ring-opening of epoxidized methyl oleate by aqueous H2 O2 has been studied using tungsten and molybdenum catalysts to form the corresponding fatty β-hydroxy hydroperoxides. It was found that tungstic acid and phosphotungstic acid gave the highest selectivities (92-93 %) towards the formation of the desired products, thus limiting the formation of the corresponding fatty 1,2-diols. The optimized conditions were applied to a range of fatty epoxides to give the corresponding fatty β-hydroxy hydroperoxides with 30-80 % isolated yields (8 examples). These species were fully characterized by 1 H and 13 C NMR spectroscopy and HPLC-HRMS, and their stability was studied by differential scanning calorimetry. The thermal cleavage of the β-hydroxy hydroperoxide derived from methyl oleate was studied both in batch and flow conditions. It was found that the thermal cleavage in flow conditions gave the highest selectivity towards the formation of aldehydes with limited amounts of byproducts. The aldehydes were both formed with 68 % GC yield, and nonanal and methyl 9-oxononanoate were isolated with 57 and 55 % yield, respectively. Advantageously, the overall process does not require large excess of H2 O2 and only generates water as a byproduct.

Bioaldehydes and beyond: Expanding the realm of bioderived chemicals using biogenic aldehydes as platforms. Curr Opin Chem Biol 2020; 59:37-46. Abstract
Biofuels and biochemicals derived from renewable resources are sconsidered as potential solutions for the energy crisis and associated environmental problems that human beings are facing today. However, so far the available types of bioderived chemicals are rather limited, and production efficiency is generally low. Expanding the realm of bioderived chemicals and relevant derivatives can help motivate the development of bioenergy and the general bioeconomy. Aldehydes, possessing unique reactivity, hold great promise as platform chemicals for producing a large portfolio of bioproducts. In this review, we focus on production of aldehydes from renewable bioresources and derivatization of aldehydes through chemocatalysis, biocatalysis, or de novo biosynthesis. Perspectives on combining protein engineering and cascade reactions for advanced aldehyde derivatization are also provided.
