Halogenation Reactions of Alkyl Alcohols Employing Methyl Grignard Reagents

Grignard reagents are commonly used as carbanion equivalents. Herein, we report an example of Grignard reagents acting as halide nucleophiles to form alkyl iodides and bromides. We establish that Grignard reagents can convert alkyl mesylates into alkyl halides, as well as be employed in a one-pot halogenation reaction starting from alcohols, which proceed through mesylate intermediates. The halogenation reaction is confirmed to occur by an SN2 pathway with inversion of configuration and is demonstrated to be efficient on multi-gram scale.

Visible-Light-Induced Tandem Reaction of Allenes with Selenesulfonates Leading to (E)-2,3-Disulfonylpropene Derivatives

A visible-light-induced tandem reaction of allenes with selenesulfonates was developed, providing (E)-2,3-disulfonylpropene derivatives in moderate to good yields. This reaction was featured with simple operation, good regioselectivity and stereoselectivity, and wide functional group tolerance. Photoinduced radical additions via energy transfer were proposed.

Palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation (AAA) with alkyl sulfones as nucleophiles

An efficient palladium-catalyzed AAA reaction with a simple α-sulfonyl carbon anion as nucleophiles is presented for the first time. Allyl fluorides are used as superior precursors for the generation of π-allyl complexes that upon ionization liberate fluoride anions for activation of silylated nucleophiles. With the unique bidentate diamidophosphite ligand ligated palladium as catalyst, the in situ generated α-sulfonyl carbon anion was quickly captured by the allylic intermediates, affording a series of chiral homo-allylic sulfones with high efficiency and selectivity. This work provides a mild in situ desilylation strategy to reveal nucleophilic carbon centers that could be used to overcome the pK_a limitation of “hard” nucleophiles in enantioselective transformations.

A variety of “hard” α-sulfonyl carbanions of aryl, heteroaryl and alkyl sulfones were successfully employed as nucleophiles in palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation with excellent enantioselectivities.

Sulfones as Chemical Chameleons: Versatile Synthetic Equivalents of Small-Molecule Synthons

Sulfones are flexible functional groups that can act as nucleophiles, electrophiles, or even radicals. Changing the reaction conditions can completely alter the reactivity of a sulfonyl group, and as a result, molecules bearing multiple sulfones are versatile building blocks. This Review highlights the unique ability of 1,1- and 1,2-bis(sulfones) to masquerade as a vast array of reactive synthons including methane polyanions, vinyl cations, and all-carbon dipoles that would be difficult or impossible to access directly.

Synthesis of Isoindoles from Intramolecular Condensation of Benzyl Azides with α-Aryldiazoesters

Rh-catalyzed intramolecular condensation of the benzyl azides with α-aryldiazoesters was explored. The reaction proceeded through the nucleophilic attack of the organic azide onto a rhodium carbenoid, while releasing nitrogen gas, affording the α-imino esters as the primary product. Tautomerization of the imino esters efficiently gave 13 desired isoindoles with good to excellent yields.
