Probing Magnetic-Exchange Coupling in Supramolecular Squares Based on Reducible Tetrazine-Derived Ligands

Self-assembly of Ni(II) metallacycles (a square and a triangle) supported by tetrazine radical bridges

Two Ni(II) molecular metallacycles of [Ni₄(bpz*tz˙^-)₄(N₃)₄] (1) and [Ni₃(bpz^Phtz˙^-)₃(pz^Ph(Cl)tz˙^-)₃]·1.3CH₃OH·9.3H₂O (2) (bpz*tz = 3,6-bis(3,5-dimethyl-pyrazolyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine; bpz^Phtz = 3,6-bis(3-phenyl-pyrazolyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine; and pz^Ph(Cl)tz = 3-bis(3-phenyl-pyrazolyl)-6-Cl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine) are reported. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction study reveals that 1 displays a square structure while 2 shows a triangle structure due to the steric effect, both bearing tetrazine radical bridges. Furthermore, magnetic studies reveal that the Ni-radical interaction in 1 is strongly ferromagnetic with a coupling constant (J) of 90.8 cm^-1 in the 2J formalist, while the overall antiferromagnetic behaviour of 2 is presumably due to the compete ferromagnetic (for the Ni-radical_bridging interaction with J₁ = 95.4 cm^-1) and antiferromagnetic (for the Ni-radical_terminal interaction, J₂ = -57.5 cm^-1) couplings.

Mono- and Binuclear Copper(II) and Nickel(II) Complexes with the 3,6-Bis(picolylamino)-1,2,4,5-Tetrazine Ligand

Four new compounds of formulas [Cu(hfac)₂(L)] (1), [Ni(hfac)₂(L)] (2), [{Cu(hfac)₂}₂(µ-L)]·2CH₃OH (3) and [{Ni(hfac)₂}₂(µ-L)]·2CH₃CN (4) [Hhfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone and L = 3,6-bis(picolylamino)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine] have been prepared and their structures determined by X-ray diffraction on single crystals. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural mononuclear complexes where the metal ions [copper(II) (1) and nickel(II) (2)] are six-coordinated in distorted octahedral MN₂O₄ surroundings which are built by two bidentate hfac ligands plus another bidentate L molecule. This last ligand coordinates to the metal ions through the nitrogen atoms of the picolylamine fragment. Compounds 3 and 4 are centrosymmetric homodinuclear compounds where two bidentate hfac units are the bidentate capping ligands at each metal center and a bis-bidentate L molecule acts as a bridge. The values of the intramolecular metal···metal separation are 7.97 (3) and 7.82 Å (4). Static (dc) magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out for polycrystalline samples 1–4 in the temperature range 1.9–300 K. Curie law behaviors were observed for 1 and 2, the downturn of χ_MT in the low temperature region for 2 being due to the zero-field splitting of the nickel(II) ion. Very weak [J = −0.247(2) cm⁻¹] and relatively weak intramolecular antiferromagnetic interactions [J = −4.86(2) cm⁻¹] occurred in 3 and 4, respectively (the spin Hamiltonian being defined as H = −JS₁·S₂). Simple symmetry considerations about the overlap between the magnetic orbitals across the extended bis-bidentate L bridge in 3 and 4 account for their magnetic properties.

Strong Coupling and Slow Relaxation of the Magnetization for an Air-Stable [Co4] Square with Both Tetrazine Radicals and Azido Bridges

Introducing both tetrazine radical and azido bridges afforded two air-stable square complexes [M^II₄(bpztz^•-)₄(N₃)₄] (M^II = Zn²⁺, 1; Co²⁺, 2; bpztz = 3,6-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine), where the metal ions are cobridged by μ_1,1-azido bridges and tetrazine radicals. Magnetic studies revealed strong antiferromagnetic metal-radical interaction with a coupling constant of -64.7 cm^-1 in the 2J formalism in 2. Remarkably, 2 exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization with an effective barrier for spin reverse of 96 K at zero applied field.

Asymmetric Ring Opening in a Tetrazine-Based Ligand Affords a Tetranuclear Opto-Magnetic Ytterbium Complex

We report the formation of a tetranuclear lanthanide cluster, [Yb₄ (bpzch)₂ (fod)₁₀ ] (1), which occurs from a serendipitous ring opening of the functionalised tetrazine bridging ligand, bpztz (3,6-dipyrazin-2-yl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine) upon reacting with Yb(fod)₃ (fod^- =6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octandionate). Compound 1 was structurally elucidated via single-crystal X-ray crystallography and subsequently magnetically and spectroscopically characterised to analyse its magnetisation dynamics and its luminescence behaviour. Computational studies validate the observed M_J energy levels attained by spectroscopy and provides a clearer picture of the slow relaxation of the magnetisation dynamics and relaxation pathways. These studies demonstrate that 1 acts as a single-molecule magnet (SMM) under an applied magnetic field in which the relaxation occurs via a combination of Raman, direct, and quantum tunnelling processes, a behaviour further rationalised analysing the luminescent properties. This marks the first lanthanide-containing molecule that forms by means of an asymmetric tetrazine decomposition.

Enhancing Magnetic Communication between Metal Centres: The Role of s-Tetrazine Based Radicals as Ligands

Although 1,2,4,5-tetrazines or s-tetrazines have been known in the literature for more than a century, their coordination chemistry has become increasingly popular in recent years due to their unique redox activity, multiple binding sites and their various applications. The electron-poor character of the ring and stabilization of the radical anion through all four nitrogen atoms in their metal complexes provide new aspects in molecular magnetism towards the synthesis of new high performing Single Molecule Magnets (SMMs). The scope of this review is to examine the role of s-tetrazine radical ligands in transition metal and lanthanide based SMMs and provide a critical overview of the progress thus far in this field. As well, general synthetic routes and new insights for the preparation of s-tetrazines are discussed, along with their redox activity and applications in various fields. Concluding remarks along with the limitations and perspectives of these ligands are discussed.

A Dimeric Chromium(II) Pincer as an Electron Shuttle for N=N Bond Scission

Reduction of the bis-pyrazolyl pyridine complex [CrL]₂ with 4 KC₈ , followed by addition of one azobenzene (overall mole ratio 1:4:1), PhNNPh, transfers reducing equivalents to three azobenzenes, to form [K₃ Cr(PhNNPh)₃ ]. This has three κ² PhNNPh^2- ligands and K⁺ bound to nitrogen atoms of azobenzene. When the stoichiometry is modified to 1:4:3, the product is changed to [K₂ CrL(PhNNPh)₂ ], which has C₂ symmetry except for the intimate ion pairing of two K⁺ ions to reduced azobenzene nitrogen atoms, and to pyrazolate and phenyl rings. The origin of the observed delivery of reducing equivalents to several, not to a single N=N bond, is traced to the resistance of the one-electron-reduced substrate to receiving a second electron, and is thus a general phenomenon. [CrL]₂ alone is shown to be a two-electron reductant towards benzo[c]cinnoline (BCC) resulting in a product of formula [Cr₂ L₂ (BCC)], in which the reducing equivalents originate purely from Cr^II . An analogous study of the reaction of [CrL]₂ with azobenzene yields [Cr₂ L₂ (PhNNPh)(THF)], an adduct in which one THF has displaced one of four hydrazide nitrogen/Cr bonds. Together these illustrate different modes for the Cr₂ L₂ unit to bind and reduce the N=N bond. Collectively, these results show that two divalent Cr, without added K⁰ , have the ability to reduce the N=N bond. Further KC₈ reduction of preformed Cr₂ L₂ (RNNR) inevitably gives products in which K⁺ stabilizes the charge in the increasingly electron-rich nitrogen atoms, in a phenomenon which mimics proton coupled electron transfer: K⁺ performs the role of H⁺ . A least-squares fit of the two singly reduced DFT structures shows that the only major change is a re-orientation of one of the two phenyl rings in order to avoid repulsion with potassium but to still allow interaction of that phenyl π system with K⁺ . This shows both the impact of K⁺ , being modest to nitrogen/chromium interactions, but nevertheless accommodating some π donation of phenyl to potassium. Finally, delivering increasing equivalents of KC₈ leads to complete cleavage of the N=N bond, and both N bind to three Cr^II . The varied impacts of the K⁺ electrophile on NN multiple bond reduction is discussed.

Unprecedented intramolecular pancake bonding in a {Dy2} single-molecule magnet

The first example of unique coordination induced intramolecular pancake bonding was achieved through the reduction of two bis(pyrazolyl)-tetrazine ligands.

Versatile coordination behaviour of the chloro-tetrazine-picolylamine ligand: mixed-valence binuclear Cu(i)/Cu(ii) complexes

The 3-Cl-6-amino-(2'-picolyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine ligand HL¹ has been synthesized and structurally characterized. Its versatile coordination behavior has been evidenced through reactions with Cu(Hfac)₂ and Cu(triflate)₂ precursors, which provided mixed-valence bimetallic Cu^1.5Cu^1.5 complexes [Cu₂(μ-Cl)(L¹)₂] 2 and [Cu₂(μ-triflate)(L¹)₂] 5. Changing the Cu(ii) precursor and the solvent leads to the formation of mononuclear octahedral Cu(ii) complexes [CuCl₂(HL¹)₂]·2CH₃CN 3 and [Cu(Hfac)₂(HL¹)] 4, in which only the amino-pyridine unit is involved in the coordination of the metal center. In contrast, in complexes 2 and 5, the ligands are deprotonated and bridge the metal centers as pyridine-amido-tetrazine fragments, while a bridging chloride or triflate ligand completes the coordination sphere of the metal ions. The Cu-Cu distances of 2.4313(4) Å in 2 and 2.5198(10) Å in 5 lie among the shorter values within mixed-valence bimetallic Cu complexes. Mixed-valence character is strongly supported by DFT calculations, showing the equal repartition of the unpaired electron between the two metal centers.

Using Redox-Active π Bridging Ligand as a Control Switch of Intramolecular Magnetic Interactions

Intramolecular magnetic interactions in the dinuclear complexes [(tpy)Ni(tphz)Ni(tpy)] ⁿ⁺ ( n = 4, 3, and 2; tpy, terpyridine; tphz, tetrapyridophenazine) were tailored by changing the oxidation state of the pyrazine-based bridging ligand. While its neutral form mediates a weak antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling between the two S = 1 Ni(II), its reduced form, tphz^•-, promotes a remarkably large ferromagnetic exchange of +214(5) K with Ni(II) spins. Reducing twice the bridging ligand affords weak Ni-Ni interactions, in marked contrast to the Co(II) analogue. Those experimental results, supported by a careful examination of the involved orbitals, provide a clear understanding of the factors which govern strength and sign of the magnetic exchange through an aromatic bridging ligand, a prerequisite for the rational design of strongly coupled molecular systems and high T_C molecule-based magnets.

Probing through-space and through-bond magnetic exchange couplings in a new benzotriazinyl radical and its metal complexes

A new Blatter radical and its Zn(ii) (1), Ni(ii) (2) and Co(ii) (3) complexes were isolated. Complex 1 exhibited radical⋯radical antiferromagnetic exchange coupling, whereas complexes 2 and 3 showed ferromagnetic metal–radical coupling.

Exploring through-bond and through-space magnetic communication in 1,3,2-dithiazolyl radical complexes

Coordination of the dithiazolyl radical MBDTA leads to strong intramolecular metal–radical magnetic exchange but the strength of the intermolecular exchange coupling is strongly dependent on molecular packing.

A Redox-Active Bridging Ligand to Promote Spin Delocalization, High-Spin Complexes, and Magnetic Multi-Switchability

A dinuclear Co^II complex, [Co₂ (tphz)(tpy)₂ ]ⁿ⁺ (n=4, 3 or 2; tphz: tetrapyridophenazine; tpy: terpyridine), has been assembled using the redox-active and strongly complexing tphz bridging ligand. The magnetic properties of this complex can be tuned from spin-crossover with T_1/2 ≈470 K for the pristine compound (n=4) to single-molecule magnet with an S_T =5/2 spin ground state when once reduced (n=3) to finally a diamagnetic species when twice reduced (n=2). The two successive and reversible reductions are concomitant with an increase of the spin delocalization within the complex, promoting remarkably large magnetic exchange couplings and high-spin species even at room temperature.
