Abstract
Aqueous-based Al-ion batteries are attractive alternatives to Li-ion batteries due to their safety, high volumetric energy density, abundance, and recyclability. Although aluminum-ion batteries are attractive, there are major challenges to overcome, which include understanding the nature of the passive layer of aluminum oxide on the aluminum anode, the narrow electrochemical window of aqueous electrolytes, and lack of suitable cathodes. Here, we report using experiments in conjunction with DFT simulations to clarify the role of ionic liquids (ILs) in altering the Al solvation dynamics, which in turn affects the aluminum electrochemistry and aqueous-based battery performance significantly. DFT calculations showed that the addition of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethylsulfonate (EMIMTfO) changes the aluminum solvation structure in the aqueous (Al(TfO)3) electrolyte to lower coordinated solvation shells, thereby influencing and improving Al deposition/stripping on the Zn/Al alloy anode. Furthermore, the addition of an IL reduces the strain in manganese oxide during intercalation/deintercalation, thereby improving the Zn/Al-MnOx battery performance. By optimizing the electrolyte composition, a battery potential of >1.7 V was achieved for the Zn/Al-MnOx system.

Abstract
α-Triaryl amines have been used as pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical intermediates for antifungal and anticancer applications. Current methods to synthesize such compounds require at least two steps, and no direct amination of tertiary alcohols has been reported. Herein, we disclose efficient catalytic conditions for the direct amination of α-triaryl alcohols to access α-triaryl amines. VO(OiPr)3, a commercially available reagent, has been identified as an effective catalyst for the direct amination of several α-triaryl alcohols. This process is scalable, as demonstrated by a gram-scale synthesis, and the reaction still works at as low as a 0.01 mol % catalyst loading with the turnover number reaching 3900. Moreover, commercial pharmaceuticals including clotrimazole and flutrimazole have been successfully prepared rapidly and efficiently using this newly developed method.

Abstract
The catalytic hydroarylation of nonactivated alkenes with aniline is a reaction of high interest, aiming at providing C-functionalized aniline derivatives that are important precursors for the fabrication of polyurethanes. However, this reaction remains a longstanding goal of catalysis, as it requires one to simultaneously address two important goals: (1) the very low reactivity of nonactivated alkenes and (2) control of the hydroarylation/hydroamination selectivity. As a result, the hydroarylation of aniline is mostly restricted to activated alkenes (i.e., featuring ring strain, conjugation, or activation with electron-donating or -withdrawing groups). Here we show that the combination of bismuth triflate and hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) leads to the formation of highly active catalytic species capable of promoting the hydroarylation of various nonactivated alkenes, such as 1-octene, 1-heptene, and 1-undecene, among others, with aniline with high selectivity (71-92%). Through a combined experimental and computational investigation, we propose a reaction pathway where HFIP stabilizes the rate-determining transition state through a H-bond interaction with the triflate anion, thus assisting the acid catalyst in the hydroarylation of nonactivated alkenes. From a practical point of view, this work opens a catalytic access to C-functionalized aniline derivatives from two cheap and abundant feedstocks in a 100% atom-economical fashion.
