Abstract
Three phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes consisting bis-diphosphine ligands were prepared and characterized by single-crystal XRD, CHN analysis, spectroscopic techniques, cyclic voltammetry, and DFT. The synthesized complexes were the three monomeric [Ir(ppy)2(L1)Cl] (1), [Ir(ppy)2(L2)]Cl (2) and [Ir(ppy)2(L3)]Cl (3) where L1 = bis-(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm), L2 = bis-(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp) and L3 = bis-(diphenylphosphino)benzene (dppbe). Complexes 1-3 gave an absorption band between 240 to 380 nm in both CH2Cl2 and DMSO, which is assigned as a charge transfer transition based on theoretical calculation. They showed a blue-green emission at 460-520 nm in DMSO with an absolute quantum efficiency of 0.013-0.046 at room temperature. The selective photo-induced electron transfer (PET) by Fe3+ in DMSO, was studied to obey the Rehm-Weller principle. The 1:1 binding soichiometry between 1-3 and Fe3+ was established by Job's plot. The binding constants (Ka) were determined using the Benesi-Hildebrand plot. All the complexes are extremely more potent than cisplatin for in vitro antiproliferative activity towards the human breast cancer cells, HCC1937, MCF-7, and MDA-MB-231. The values of IC50 were in the range of 0.077-0.485 μM, and 1 exhibited the most effective IC50 against MDA-MB-231 cell line, the triple-negative breast cancer cell. Their lipophilicities (log P) were also examined to explain the penetration ability of the studied complexes towards cell barriers, and transport to the molecular target.

Abstract
In this work we disclose a new family of biscyclometallated Ir(III) complexes of the general formula [Ir(C^N)2(N^N)]Cl (IrL1-IrL5), where HC^N is 1-phenyl-β-carboline and N^N ligands (L1-L5) are different diimine ligands that differ from each other in the number of aromatic rings fused to the bipyridine scaffold. The photophysical properties of IrL1-IrL5 were thoroughly studied, and theoretical calculations were performed for a deeper comprehension of the respective variations along the series. All complexes exhibited high photostability under blue light irradiation. An increase in the number of aromatic rings led to a reduction in the HOMO-LUMO band gap causing a red-shift in the absorbance bands. Although all the complexes generated singlet oxygen (1O2) in aerated aqueous solutions through a photocatalytic process, IrL5 was by far the most efficient photosensitizer. Consequently, IrL5 was highly active in the photocatalytic oxidation of NADH. The formation of aggregates in DMSO at a high concentration (25 mM) was confirmed using different techniques, but was proved to be negligible in the concentration range of biological experiments. Moreover, ICP-MS studies proved that the cellular uptake of IrL2 and IrL3 is much better relative to that of IrL1, IrL4 and IrL5. The antiproliferative activity of IrL1-IrL5 was investigated in the dark and under blue light irradiation against different cancer cell lines. Complexes IrL1-IrL4 were found to be cytotoxic under dark conditions, while IrL5 turned out to be weakly cytotoxic. Despite the low cellular uptake of IrL5, this derivative exhibited a high increase of cytotoxicity upon blue light irradiation resulting in photocytotoxicity indexes (PI) up to 38. IrL1-IrL4 showed lower photocytotoxicity indexes ranging from 1.3 to 17.0. Haemolytic experiments corroborated the compatibility of our complexes with red blood cells. Confocal microscopy studies proved their accumulation in mitochondria, leading to mitochondrial membrane depolarization, and ruled out their localization in lysosomes. Overall, the mitochondria-targeted activity of IrL5, which inhibits considerably the viability of cancer cells upon blue light irradiation, allows us to outline this PS as a new alternative to traditional chemotherapeutic agents.

Abstract
Two novel cyclometallated iridium(III) complexes have been prepared with one bidentate or two monodentate imidazole-based ligands, 1 and 2, respectively. The complexes showed intense emission with long lifetimes of the excited state. Femtosecond transient absorption experiments established the nature of the lowest excited state as 3IL state. Singlet oxygen generation with good yields (40% for 1 and 82% for 2) was established by detecting 1O2 directly, through its emission at 1270 nm. Photostability studies were also performed to assess the viability of the complexes as photosensitizers (PS) for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Complex 1 was selected as a good candidate to investigate light-activated killing of cells, whilst complex 2 was found to be toxic in the dark and unstable under light. Complex 1 demonstrated high phototoxicity indexes (PI) in the visible region, PI > 250 after irradiation at 405 nm and PI > 150 at 455 nm, in EJ bladder cancer cells.

Abstract
Cyclometalated Ir(III) complexes as photosensitizers (PSs) have attracted widespread attention because of their good photostability and efficient 1O2 production ability. However, their strong absorption in the UV-vis region severely limits their applications in photodynamic therapy (PDT) because the short wavelength illuminating light can be easily absorbed by the skin and subcutaneous adipose tissue causing damage to the patient's normal tissue. Herein, mono- and tetra-nuclear Ir(III) complex-porphyrin conjugates are rationally designed and synthesized, especially [TPP-4Ir]4+ exhibits obvious aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. PSs comprising Ir(III) complex-porphyrin conjugates self-assembled as nanoparticles (NPs) are successfully achieved. The obtained [TPP-Ir]+ NPs and [TPP-4Ir]4+ NPs exhibit long wavelength absorption (500-700 nm) and near-infrared emission (635-750 nm), successfully overcoming the inherent defects of short wavelength absorption of traditional Ir(III) complexes. Moreover, [TPP-4Ir]4+ NPs exhibit good biocompatibility, high 1O2 generation ability, low half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) (0.47 × 10-6 M), potent cytotoxicity toward cancer cells and superior cellular uptake under white light irradiation. This work extends the scope for transition metal complex PSs with promising clinical applications.

Abstract
Photodynamic therapy is an alternative to classical chemotherapy due to its potential to reduce side effects by a controlled activation of a photosensitizer through local irradiation with light. The photosensitizer then interacts with oxygen and generates reactive oxygen species. Iridium biscyclometallated complexes are very promising photosensitizers due to their exceptional photophysical properties and their ability to target mitochondria. Four Ir(III) biscyclometallated complexes of formula [Ir(C^N)2(N^N')]Cl, where N^N' is a ligand containing a benzimidazolyl fragment, have been synthesized and characterized. The C^N ligands were 2-phenylpyridinate (ppy) and 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridinate (dfppy). The complexes exhibited high photostability. The electrochemical and photophysical properties were modulated by both the cyclometallating and the ancillary ligands. The dfppy derivatives yielded the highest emission energy values, quantum yields of phosphorescence and excited state lifetimes. All complexes generated 1O2 in aerated solutions upon irradiation. Biological studies revealed that these complexes have a moderate cytotoxicity in the dark against different human cancer cell lines: prostate (PC-3), colon (CACO-2) and melanoma (SK-MEL-28), and against non-malignant fibroblasts (CCD-18Co). However, derivatives with ppy ligands ([1a]Cl, [2a]Cl) yielded a relevant photodynamic activity upon light irradiation (450 nm, 24.1 J cm-2), with phototoxicity indexes (EC50,dark/EC50,light) of 20.8 and 17.3, respectively, achieved in PC-3 cells. Mechanistic studies showed that these complexes are taken up by the cells through endocytosis and preferentially accumulate in mitochondria. Upon photoactivation, the complexes induced mitochondrial membrane depolarization and DNA damage, thus triggering cell death, mainly by apoptosis. Complex [1a]Cl is also able to oxidize NADH. This mitochondria-targeted photodynamic mechanism greatly inhibited the reproductive capacity of cancer cells and provides a valuable alternative to traditional chemotherapy for the controlled treatment of cancer.

Abstract
Three neutral Pt(II) complexes containing 1-Methylimidazole and the antifungal imidazolyl drugs Clotrimazole and Bifonazole have been prepared. The general formula of the new derivatives is [Pt(κ2-(C^N)Cl(L)], where C^N stands for ppy = 2-phenylpyridinate, and L = 1-Methylimidazole (MeIm) for [Pt-MeIm]; L = Clotrimazole (CTZ) for [Pt-CTZ] and L = Bifonazole (BFZ) for [Pt-BFZ]). The complexes have been completely characterized in solution and the crystal structures of [Pt-BFZ] and [Pt-CTZ] have been resolved. Complexes [Pt-MeIm] and [Pt-BFZ] present higher cytotoxicity than cisplatin in SW480 (colon adenocarcinoma), A549 (lung adenocarcinoma) and A2780 (ovarian cancer) cell lines. [Pt-MeIm] shows the highest accumulation in A549 cells, in agreement with its inability to interact with serum albumin. By contrast, [Pt-CTZ] and [Pt-BFZ] interact with serum proteins, a fact that reduces their bioavailability. The strongest interaction with bovine serum albumin (BSA) is found for [Pt-BFZ], which is the least internalized inside the cells. All the complexes are able to covalently interact with DNA. The most cytotoxic complexes, [Pt-MeIm] and [Pt-BFZ] induce cellular accumulation in G0/G1 and apoptosis by a similar pathway, probably involving a reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation mechanism. [Pt-BFZ] turns out to be the most efficient complex regarding ROS generation and causes mitochondrial membrane depolarization, whereas [Pt-MeIm] induces the opposite effect, hyperpolarization of the mitochondrial membrane. On the contrary, the least cytotoxic complex, [Pt-CTZ] cannot block the cell cycle or generate ROS and the mechanism by which it induces apoptosis could be a different one.

Abstract
Cancer and antibiotic resistance are two global health threats that usually hamper clinical chemotherapeutic efficacy. Particularly for lung cancer, bacterial infections frequently arise thereby complicating the course of cancer treatment. In this sense, three new neutral luminescent cycloplatinated(II) photosensitizers of the type [Pt(dmba)(L)] (dmba = N,N-dimethylbenzylamine-κN,κC; L = 2-(benzo[d]oxazol-2-yl)-phenolato-κN,κO1, 2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-phenolato-κN,κO2, and 2-(1-methyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-2-yl)phenolato-κN,κO3) have been characterized and developed to potentially eliminate both resistant bacteria and lung cancer cells. The phototherapeutic effects of complex 2 have been evaluated using low doses of blue light irradiation. Complex 2 exerted promising photoactivity against pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria strains of clinical interest, displaying a phototoxic index (PI) of 15 for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, one of the major microorganisms predominating lung infections. Likewise, the anticancer activity of 2 was also increased upon light irradiation in human lung A549 cancer cells (PI = 36). Further in vitro experiments with this platinum(II) complex suggest that ROS-generating photodynamic reactions were involved upon light irradiation, thus providing a reasonable mechanism for its dual anticancer and antibacterial activities.

Abstract
Two new iridium(III) complexes were synthesized by introducing two trifluoromethyl groups into an ancillary ligand to develop pure-red emitters for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The electron-donating ability of the ancillary ligands is suppressed, owing to the electron-withdrawing nature of trifluoromethyl groups, which can reduce the HOMO energy levels compared with those of compounds without trifluoromethyl groups. However, the introduction of trifluoromethyl groups into the ancillary ligand has little impact on the LUMO energy levels. Therefore, a well-tuned, pure-red, excited-state energy was achieved by regulating the relative energy level between the HOMO and LUMO. OLEDs with these complexes as emitters showed high external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 26 % and realized high EQEs of about 25 % and fairly low driving voltages of 3.3-3.6 V for practical luminance of 1000 cd m-2 , as well as excellent Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.66, 0.33) and (0.67, 0.33); thus, this demonstrates the successful molecular design strategy by modifying the electron-donating ability of ancillary ligand.

Abstract
Aerobic photo-oxidation of sulfide into sulfoxide in water is of great interest in green chemistry. In this study, three highly stable Ir(III)-Zr(IV) metal-organic frameworks (Ir-Zr MOFs), namely Zr6-Irbpy (bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine), Zr6-IrbpyOMe (bpyOMe is 4,4'-dimethoxy-2,2'-bipyridine), and Zr6-Irphen (phen is 1,10-phenanthroline), are constructed by using [Ir(pqc)2(L)2]Cl complexes (where pqc is 2-phenylquinoline-4-carboxylic acid and L is an ancillary ligand bpy, bpyOMe, or phen) as linkers and Zr6 cluster as nodes. The constructed Ir-Zr MOFs present high catalytic activity on aerobic photo-oxidation of sulfide into sulfoxide under visible light irradiation in water at room temperature. Moreover, the reaction is high chemoselectivity and functional group tolerance. The catalyst can be readily recycled and reused at least 10 times without loss of catalytic activity. Mechanism studies demonstrate that superoxide radical is the reactive oxygen species in the sulfoxidation, which is generated by electron transfer from the excited triplet photosensitizer 3[Ir-Zr-MOF]* to O2. The high activity of photocatalytic sulfoxidation in water may be attributed to the stabilization of the persulfoxide intermediate by hydrogen bond formation with water solvent, which accelerates the conversion of persulfoxide into sulfoxide and prevents further oxidation of sulfoxide into sulfone. This work provides a new strategy for the green synthesis of sulfoxides under ambient conditions.

Abstract
The synthesized 2-(hydroxy-1-naphtyl)imidazo-[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline (HNAIP) ligand and its new iridium ([Ir(ppy)2(HNAIP)]Cl) and rhodium ([Rh(ppy)2(HNAIP)]Cl) complexes, being ppy = 2-phenylpiridinate, show cytotoxic effects in SW480 (colon adenocarcinoma) and A549 (epithelial lung adenocarcinoma) cells. They all are cytotoxic in the tested cell lines. HNAIP and [Rh(ppy)2(HNAIP)]+ are the most cytotoxic, whereas [Ir(ppy)2(HNAIP)]+ displays negligible cytotoxicity towards A549 cells and moderate activity towards SW480. The interaction of all three compounds with Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA), l-glutathione reduced (GSH), nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and DNA was studied to explain the differences found in terms of cytotoxicity. None of them are able to interact with BSA, thus excluding bioavailability due to plasma protein interaction as the possible differentiating factor in their biological activity. By contrast, small differences have been observed regarding DNA interaction. In addition, taking advantage of the emission properties of these molecules, they have been visualized in the cytoplasmic region of A549 cells. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) experiments show, in turn, that the internalization ability follow the sequence [Rh(ppy)2(HNAIP)]+ > [Ir(ppy)2(HNAIP)]+ > cisplatin. Therefore, it seems clear that the cellular uptake by tumour cells is the key factor affecting the different cytotoxicity of the metal complexes and that this cellular uptake is influenced by the hydrophobicity of the studied complexes. On the other hand, preliminary catalytic experiments performed on the photo-oxidation of GSH and some amino acids such as l-methionine (Met), l-cysteine (Cys) and l-tryptophan (Trp) provide evidence for the photocatalytic activity of the Ir(III) complex in this type of reactions.

Abstract
With 2-phenylquinoline (pq) as a cyclometalated ligand, a series of cationic Ir(III) complexes [Ir(pq)2(L1)2](PF6) (L1 is pyridine (1a), 4-methoxypyridine (1b), 4-dimethylaminopyridine (1c), and 4-acetylpyridine (1d)) and [Ir(pq)2(L2)](PF6) (L2 is 2,2'-bipyridine (1e), 2,2'-bipyrimidyl (1f), 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (1g), and 4,4'-dimethoxy-2,2'-bipyridine (1h)) were synthesized and characterized. The influence of the metal-based highest occupied molecular orbital on triplet-state lifetime, triplet-state quantum yield, and 1O2 generation quantum yield as well as aerobic photo-oxidation of sulfide into sulfoxide was evaluated via tuning the ancillary ligand of Ir(pq)2 complexes. The results revealed that 1h with chelate ancillary ligand bearing electron-donating group possesses a high 1O2 generation quantum yield (0.90) and photocatalytic activity for sulfide oxidation with high chemoselectivity and a low catalyst loading (0.5 mol %) under mild conditions. Moreover, one-pot two-step procedure for preparation of enantiopure sulfoxides, including aerobic photo-oxidation of sulfide using 1h as a photosensitizer and chiral resolution of sulfoxide via a chiral-at-metal strategy, was also developed.
