Influence of a Pre-organized N-Donor Group on the Coordination of Trivalent Actinides and Lanthanides by an Aminopolycarboxylate Complexant

Tuning aminopolycarboxylate chelators for efficient complexation of trivalent actinides

The complexation of trivalent lanthanides and minor actinides (Am3+, Cm3+, and Cf3+) by the acyclic aminopolycarboxylate chelators 6,6'-((ethane-1,2-diylbis-((carboxymethyl)azanediyl))bis-(methylene))dipicolinic acid (H4octapa) and 6,6'-((((4-(1-(2-(2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis-(methylene))bis-((carboxymethyl)azanediyl))bis-(methylene)) dipicolinic acid (H4pypa-peg) were studied using potentiometry, spectroscopy, competitive complexation liquid-liquid extraction, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Two studied reagents are strong multidentate chelators, well-suited for applications seeking radiometal coordination for in-vivo delivery and f-element isolation. The previously reported H4octapa forms a compact coordination packet, while H4pypa-peg is less sterically constrained due to the presence of central pyridine ring. The solubility of H4octapa is limited in a non-complexing high ionic strength perchlorate media. However, the introduction of a polyethylene glycol group in H4pypa-peg increased the solubility without influencing its ability to complex the lanthanides and minor actinides in solution.

Sensing and extraction of hazardous metals by di-phosphonates of heterocycles: a combined experimental and theoretical study

In this study, pyridine and phenanthroline diphosphonate ligands were investigated for the first time from the context of solvent extraction and potentiometric sensing of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) cations. The extraction efficiency under the same conditions for phenanthroline-diphosphonates is considerably higher than that for pyridine ligands. At the same time, the pyridine-diphosphonates show pronounced selectivity towards lead in this metal series. The extraction systems with phenanthroline diphosphonates provided the most efficient extraction of Cd(II) and Pb(II) cations (D > 90). The newly developed pyridine and phenanthroline diphosphonate ligands have proven to be highly effective components in plasticized polymeric membranes. These ligands can be utilized to construct potentiometric ion sensors that exhibit a notable response specifically towards Pb(II) cations. Among the previously reported tetradentate ligands, the phenanthroline diphosphonate ligand, when incorporated into plasticized polymeric membranes, demonstrated the highest sensitivity towards d-metals and Pb(II). The structure of the single crystal complex of Pb(II) and Cd(II) with pyridine-diphosphonates was studied by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The geometry of Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) complexes and the energy effect of the complex formation, including pseudo-oligomerization reactions, were determined by DFT calculations. The high sensing and extraction efficiency of diphosphonates with respect to Pb(II) is consistent with the minimum values of complex formation energies. The variation in sensory and extraction properties observed among the studied diphosphonate ligands is influenced by the ability to form polynuclear complexes with Pb(II) cations, whereas such properties are absent in the case of Cd(II) cations.

Comparative Investigation into the Complexation and Extraction Properties of Tridentate and Tetradentate Phosphine Oxide-Functionalized 1,10-Phenanthroline Ligands toward Lanthanides and Actinides

Two new phosphine oxide-functionalized 1,10-phenanthroline ligands, tetradentate 2,9-bis(butylphenylphosphine oxide)-1,10-phenanthroline (BuPh-BPPhen, L¹ ) and tridentate 2-(butylphenylphosphine oxide)-1,10-phenanthroline (BuPh-MPPhen, L² ), were synthesized and studied comparatively for their coordination with trivalent actinides and lanthanides. The complexation mechanisms of these two ligands toward trivalent f-block elements were thoroughly elucidated by NMR spectroscopy, UV/vis spectrophotometry, fluorescence spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, solvent extraction, and theoretical calculation methods. NMR titration results demonstrated that 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 (metal to ligand) lanthanides complexes formed for L¹ , whereas 1 : 1, 1 : 2 and 1 : 3 lanthanide complexes formed for L² in methanol. The formation of these species was validated by fluorescence spectrometry, and the corresponding stability constants for the complexes of Nd^III with L¹ and L² were determined by using UV/vis spectrophotometry. Structures of the 10-coordinated 1 : 1-type complexes of EuL¹ (NO₃ )₃ and [EuL² (NO₃ )₃ (H₂ O)] Et₂ O in the solid state were characterized by X-ray crystallography. In solvent-extraction experiments, L¹ exhibited extremely strong extraction ability for both Am^III and Eu^III , whereas L² showed nearly no extraction toward Am^III or Eu^III due to its high hydrophilicity. Finally, the structures and bonding natures of the complex species formed between Am^III /Eu^III and L¹ /L² were analyzed in DFT calculations.

Hydroxypyridinone Derivatives: A Low-pH Alternative to Polyaminocarboxylates for TALSPEAK-like Separation of Trivalent Actinides from Lanthanides

Separation of lanthanides (Ln) from actinides (An) is unanimously challenging in reprocessing used nuclear fuel despite of much dedicated efforts over the past several decades. The TALSPEAK process is the current reference method in the United States for Ln³⁺/An³⁺ separation but suffers from several limitations, such as a narrow working pH window (3.5-4.0), costly pH buffers, and slow extraction kinetics. Studies aiming at improving TALSPEAK have so far focused on polyaminocarboxylates hold-back reagents. Here, a new class of water-soluble ligands comprising hydroxypyridinone metal-binding units are evaluated for Ln³⁺/An³⁺ separation. The model octadentate chelator 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO) (abbreviated as HOPO) was used in combination with several industry-relevant organic extractants to separate Gd from four transplutonium elements (Am, Cm, Bk, and Cf). Cyanex 301 GN and HDEHP worked best in combination with HOPO, whereas HEH[EHP], Cyanex 572, and ACORGA M5640 did not yield practical Ln³⁺/An³⁺ separation. Separation factors between Gd³⁺ and Am³⁺ reach about 50 with the HOPO/Cyanex 301 GN system and 30 with the HOPO/HDEHP system. The results using HDEHP (SF_Gd/Am = 30, SF_Gd/Cm = 8.5, and SF_Gd/Cf = 773) are high enough for industrial applications, and the proposed system works at pH values as low as 1.5, which simplifies the process by eliminating the need for pH buffers. In contrast to previously proposed methods, the HOPO-based process is also highly selective at separating Bk from Ln³⁺ (SF_Gd/Bk = 273) owing to in situ, spontaneous oxidation of Bk(III) to Bk(IV) by HOPO. The optimal pH in the case of HOPO/Cyanex 301 GN is 3.6 (SF_Am/Gd = 50, SF_Cm/Gd = 23, SF_Bk/Gd = 1.4, and SF_Cf/Gd = 3.2), but this system has the advantage of extracting An ions into the organic phase while keeping Ln ions in the aqueous phase, which is opposite to the conventional TALSPEAK process. This study represents the first optimization of a TALSPEAK-like Ln/An separation method using a HOPO chelator and paves the avenue for further developments of analytical science and reprocessing of used nuclear fuel.

Activation of the Aromatic Core of 3,3'-(Pyridine-2,6-diylbis(1H-1,2,3-triazole-4,1-diyl))bis(propan-1-ol)-Effects on Extraction Performance, Stability Constants, and Basicity

The "CHON" compatible water-soluble ligand 3,3'-(pyridine-2,6-diylbis(1H-1,2,3-triazole-4,1-diyl))bis(propan-1-ol) (PTD) has shown promise for selectively stripping actinide ions from an organic phase containing both actinide and lanthanide ions, by preferential complexation of the former. Aiming at improving its complexation properties, PTD-OMe was synthesized, bearing a methoxy group on the central pyridine ring, thus increasing its basicity and hence complexation strength. Unfortunately, solvent extraction experiments in the range of 0.1-1 mol/L nitric acid proved PTD-OMe to be less efficient than PTD. This behavior is explained by its greater pK_a value (pK_a = 2.54) compared to PTD (pK_a = 2.1). This counteracts its improved complexation properties for Cm(III) (log β₃(PTD-OMe) = 10.8 ± 0.4 versus log β₃(PTD) = 9.9 ± 0.5).
