Synthesis of Bis(phosphanyl)alkane Monosulfides by the Addition of Diphosphane Monosulfides to Alkenes under Light

Dithiophosphinylation of Allenyl Acetates: Access to 1,2-Bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane-Type Bidentate Ligands

1,2-Bis(diphenylphosphino)ethanes (DPPEs) are versatile and immensely important ligands in transition metal catalysts. Here we report the dithiophosphinylation of readily available allenyl acetates to give DPPEs in high yields and regioselectivity. This protocol features a broad substrate scope and mild conditions, avoiding the use of transition metals and air-sensitive sources of phosphorus. Mechanism studies indicate that the reaction was accomplished via an SN2'-type addition-elimination followed by a 1,4-addition step.

Construction of Bidentate Phosphines Enabled by Photoinduced Reductive Diphosphination of Alkenes

The diphosphination of alkenes through a radical pathway offers a promising approach for the rapid construction of aryl bisphosphines. However, such a synthetic strategy has not been successfully applied to the preparation of alkyl bisphosphines, partially due to the difficulties in the generation of phosphorus-centered radicals from common alkyl phosphine compounds. We herein demonstrate that this challenge can be overcome by hiring Janus-faced chlorophosphine as the phosphine source that can act as not only a radical precursor to generate phosphine-centered radicals but also a radicalphile to capture alkyl radicals. With this novel strategy, a photocatalyzed reductive diphosphination reaction has been established, allowing for a straightforward synthesis of both aryl and alkyl 1,2-bisphosphines from readily accessible alkenes and chlorophosphines.

Regioselective One-Pot Synthesis of Vicinal Bisphosphine Derivatives from Nitroalkenes by Hydrophosphinylation/Elimination/Hydrophosphinylation

Herein, a facile method is developed for the synthesis of vicinal bisphosphine derivatives based on a cascade of hydrophosphinylation, elimination, and hydrophosphinylation of secondary phosphine oxides with nitroalkenes. This cascade reaction provides step-economy access to a series of vicinal bisphosphine derivatives with high to excellent yields (up to 99%). This method was further extended to prepare, in one-pot, regioselective vicinal bisphosphine derivatives that incorporated two different phosphorus functional groups.

Photoinduced Synthesis of Bisphosphinated Quinoxalines via Radical Cyclization of o-Diisocyanoarenes with Diphosphines

The cycloaddition reaction of o-diisocyanoarenes with interelement compounds under light is a very important reaction system to clarify whether this reaction proceeds by radical cyclization or by aza-Bergman cyclization. In this study, a series of diphosphines with phosphorus-phosphorus single bonds were selected as interelement compounds, and their cycloaddition reactions with o-diisocyanoarenes under light were investigated in detail to achieve a novel photoinduced synthesis of bisphosphinated quinoxalines via the radical cyclization pathway. In addition, the photoinduced reaction of diphosphines with isocyanides having o-functional groups such as cyano and ethenyl groups allowed us to elucidate the reaction pathway and product selectivity of this bisphosphination. Furthermore, the one-pot synthesis of Pd^II -quinoxaline complex was successfully achieved by applying the developed reaction.

Metal-Free One-Pot Multi-Functionalization of Unsaturated Compounds with Interelement Compounds by Radical Process

In recent years, the importance of "environmentally friendly manufacturing" has been increasing toward the establishment of a resource-recycling society. In organic synthesis, as well, it is becoming increasingly important to develop new synthetic strategies with resource conservation and the recycling of elemental resources in mind, rather than just only synthesis. Many studies on the construction of frameworks of functional molecules using ionic reactions and transition-metal-catalyzed reactions have been reported, but most of them have focused on the formation of carbon-carbon bonds. However, it is essential to introduce appropriate functional groups at appropriate positions in molecules in order for the molecules to express their functions, and furthermore, the highly selective preparation of multiple functional groups is considered important for the creation of new functional molecules. In this review, we focus on radical reactions with high functional group selectivity and overview the recent progress in practical methods for the simultaneous introduction of multiple functional groups and propose future synthetic strategies that emphasize the recycling of elemental resources and environmental friendliness.

A theory-driven synthesis of symmetric and unsymmetric 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane analogues via radical difunctionalization of ethylene

1,2-Bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (DPPE) and its synthetic analogues are important structural motifs in organic synthesis, particularly as diphosphine ligands with a C₂-alkyl-linker chain. Since DPPE is known to bind to many metal centers in a bidentate fashion to stabilize the corresponding metal complex via the chelation effect originating from its entropic advantage over monodentate ligands, it is often used in transition-metal-catalyzed transformations. Symmetric DPPE derivatives (Ar¹₂P-CH₂-CH₂-PAr¹₂) are well-known and readily prepared, but electronically and sterically unsymmetric DPPE (Ar¹₂P-CH₂-CH₂-PAr²₂; Ar¹≠Ar²) ligands have been less explored, mostly due to the difficulties associated with their preparation. Here we report a synthetic method for both symmetric and unsymmetric DPPEs via radical difunctionalization of ethylene, a fundamental C₂ unit, with two phosphine-centered radicals, which is guided by the computational analysis with the artificial force induced reaction (AFIR) method, a quantum chemical calculation-based automated reaction path search tool. The obtained unsymmetric DPPE ligands can coordinate to several transition-metal salts to form the corresponding complexes, one of which exhibits distinctly different characteristics than the corresponding symmetric DPPE-metal complex.

Photoinduced Bisphosphination of Alkynes with Phosphorus Interelement Compounds and Its Application to Double-Bond Isomerization

The addition of interelement compounds with heteroatom-heteroatom single bonds to carbon-carbon unsaturated bonds under light irradiation is believed to be an atomically efficient method to procure materials with carbon-heteroatom bonds. In this study, we achieved the photoinduced bisphosphination of alkynes using the phosphorus interelement compound, tetraphenyldiphosphine monosulfide (1), to stereoselectively obtain the corresponding (E)-vic-1,2-bisphosphinoalkenes, which are important transition-metal ligands. The bisphosphination reaction was performed by mixing 1 and various alkynes and then exposing the mixture to light irradiation. Optimization of the conditions for the bisphosphination reaction resulted in a wide substrate range and excellent trans-selectivity. Moreover, the completely regioselective introduction of pentavalent and trivalent phosphorus groups to the terminal and internal positions of the alkynes, respectively, was achieved. We also found that the novel double-bond isomerization reaction of the synthesized bisphosphinated products occurred with a catalytic amount of a base under mild conditions. Our method for the photoinduced bisphosphination of carbon-carbon unsaturated compounds may have strong implications for both organic synthesis and organometallic and catalyst chemistry.

Highly regio- and stereoselective phosphinylphosphination of terminal alkynes with tetraphenyldiphosphine monoxide under radical conditions

The homolytic cleavage of the P^V(O)–P^III bond in tetraphenyldiphosphine monoxide simultaneously provides both pentavalent and trivalent phosphorus-centered radicals with different reactivities. The method using V-40 as an initiator is successfully investigated for the regio- and stereoselective phosphinylphosphination of terminal alkynes giving the corresponding trans-isomers of 1-diphenylphosphinyl-2-diphenylthiophosphinyl-1-alkenes in good yields. The protocol can be applied to a wide variety of terminal alkynes including both alkyl- and arylalkynes.

Shining Light on the Light-Bearing Element: A Brief Review of Photomediated C–H Phosphorylation Reactions

Organophosphorus compounds have numerous useful applications, from versatile ligands and nucleophiles in the case of trivalent organophosphorus species to therapeutics, agrochemicals and material additives for pentavalent species. Although phosphorus chemistry is a fairly mature field, the construction of C–P(V) bonds relies heavily on either prefunctionalized substrates such as alkyl or aryl halides, or requires previously oxidized bonds such as C=N or C=O, leading to potential sustainability issues when looking at the overall synthetic route. In light of the recent advances in photochemistry, using photons as a reagent can provide better alternatives for phosphorylations by unlocking radical mechanisms and providing interesting redox pathways. This review will showcase the different photomediated phosphorylation procedures available for converting C–H bonds into C–P(V) bonds.

Photoinduced Syntheses and Reactivities of Phosphorus-Containing Interelement Compounds

The photoinduced reactions of tetraphenyldiphosphine disulfide with a range of organic dichalcogenides successfully afforded a series of phosphorus(V)-chalcogen interelement compounds via a radical process. The relative reactivities of the organic dichalcogenides (i.e., (PhS)₂, (PhSe)₂, and (PhTe)₂) toward the P^III or P^V groups in the diphosphine analogues under light were investigated in detail, and a convenient method was developed to form P-S or P-Se interelement compounds from tetraphenyldiphosphine disulfide and (PhS)₂ or (PhSe)₂ upon photoirradiation. Furthermore, the relative photochemical properties and reactivities of tetraphenyldiphophine (P-P interelement compound) and its analogues toward photoinduced radical addition reactions were also discussed. The formed P-E (E = S, Se) interelement compounds could be utilized for ionic reactions, and they could be transformed into various phosphine reagents via one-pot processes.

1,1-Addition of α-C2-Bridged Biphospholes with Alkynes

An unusual chemoselective 1,1-addition of α-C₂-bridged biphospholes to terminal alkynes is reported. The developed protocol provides simple access to the unknown 1,3-diphosphepines, which has potential applications in the coordination and catalyst chemistry. Their Pd and Mo complexes were studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. This method features excellent chemoselectivity, high step and atom economy, mild reaction conditions, and wide substrate scope.

Synthesis of DPPP- and DPPPEN-Type Bidentate Ligands by Ring-Opening Diphosphination of Methylene- and Vinylcyclopropanes under Visible-Light-Promoted Photoredox Catalysis

A ring-opening diphosphination of methylene- and vinylcyclopropanes with tetraaryldiphosphines (Ar₂P-PAr₂) has been developed to afford the corresponding 1,3-diphenylphosphinopropane- and 1,3-diphenylphosphinopentane-type bidentate ligands, respectively. The reaction proceeds under bromine cation-initiated, visible-light-promoted photoredox catalysis at ambient temperature. Owing to the ready availability of functionalized diphosphines, the electronically diverse MeO- and CF₃-substituted bidentate ligands are also easily prepared.

Reductive Rearrangement of Tetraphenyldiphosphine Disulfide To Trigger the Bisthiophosphinylation of Alkenes and Alkynes

The facile synthesis of organophosphorus compounds is of great importance for the development of new synthetic methods by using air-stable sources of phosphorus. In this respect, a synthetic method that is based on a reductive rearrangement and is capable of converting air-stable pentavalent phosphorus compounds into reactive trivalent phosphorus compounds is a powerful tool. Tetraphenyldiphosphine disulfide, which is a shelf-stable solid, was the focus of this study, and it was shown to undergo reductive rearrangement to trigger the bisthiophosphinylation of a variety of alkenes, such as terminal, cyclic, internal, and branched alkenes, 1,3-dienes, and terminal alkynes when exposed to light without any catalyst, base, or additive.
