Abstract
Spiro-heterocycles have received special attention in medicinal chemistry because of their promising biological activity. Over the years, many synthetic methodologies have been established for the construction of spirocyclic compounds. Spiro heterocycles such as spiro-azetidin-2-one, -pyrrolidine, -indol(one) and -pyran derivatives have been found to exhibit diversified biological and pharmacological activity in addition to their therapeutic properties. In view of these facts, we decided in this review to present representative synthetic approaches of the aforementioned spiro heterocycles, especially in the past 20 years.

Abstract
Cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes with a 1,1'-ferrocenylene backbone (fcCAACs) are established as an original family by the preparation of a crystalline congener. The Ccarbene bond angle is unprecedentedly wide for a CAAC, causing an exceptionally pronounced ambiphilicity. The redox-active backbone opens the door to unconventional metalloradicals and oligoradicals.

Bicyclic triazolium
scaffolds are widely employed in N-heterocyclic carbene
(NHC) organocatalysis. While the incorporation
of a fused ring was initially for synthetic utility in accessing chiral,
modular triazolyl scaffolds, recent results highlight the potential
for impact upon reaction outcome with the underpinning origins unclear.
The common first step to all triazolium-catalyzed transformations
is C(3)-H deprotonation to form the triazolylidene NHC. Herein, we
report an analysis of the impact of size of the fused (5-, 6-, and
7-membered, n = 1, 2, and 3, respectively) ring on
the C(3) proton transfer reactions of a series of bicyclic triazolium
salts. Rate constants for the deuteroxide-catalyzed C(3)-H/D-exchange
of triazolium salts, kDO, were significantly
influenced by the size of the adjacent fused ring, with the kinetic
acidity trend, or protofugalities, following the order kDO (n = 1) > kDO (n = 2) ≈ kDO (n = 3). Detailed analyses of X-ray diffraction
(XRD) data for 20 triazolium salts (including 16 new structures) and
of computational data for the corresponding triazolylidene NHCs provide
insight on structural effects of alteration of fused ring size. In
particular, changes in internal triazolyl NCN angle and positioning
of the most proximal CH2 with variation in fused ring size
are proposed to influence the experimental protofugality order.

Abstract
Abstract
The reaction of [iPr2N=CHCl]Cl with 2-phenylbenzthiazolidine (Ph-BtzH) and subsequent anion metathesis afforded the formamidinium salt [(Ph-Btz)CH(NiPr2)][PF6] ([1aH][PF6]). The reaction of [1aH][PF6] with (Me3Si)2NNa in the presence of grey selenium furnished the selenourea derivative 1aSe as trapping product of the acyclic diaminocarbene 1a. In the absence of selenium, a 2H-1,4-benzothiazine derivative (2) was obtained, which is an isomer of 1a, whose formation is plausibly initiated by deprotonation of [1aH]+ not at the cationic N2CH unit, but at the neighbouring PhCH position. CO was ineffective as trapping reagent for 1a. [1aH][PF6], 1aSe and 2 have been structurally characterised by X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
The first insertion reaction of CO with a molecular complex of the heavy p-block elements is reported (principal quantum number > 4).
Major advances in the chemistry of 5th and 6th row heavy p-block element compounds have recently uncovered intriguing reactivity patterns towards small molecules such as H2, CO2, and ethylene. However, well-defined, homogeneous insertion reactions with carbon monoxide, one of the benchmark substrates in this field, have not been reported to date. We demonstrate here, that a cationic bismuth amide undergoes facile insertion of CO into the Bi–N bond under mild conditions. This approach grants direct access to the first cationic bismuth carbamoyl species. Its characterization by NMR, IR, and UV/vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray analysis, cyclic voltammetry, and DFT calculations revealed intriguing properties, such as a reversible electron transfer at the bismuth center and an absorption feature at 353 nm ascribed to a transition involving σ- and π-type orbitals of the bismuth-carbamoyl functionality. A combined experimental and theoretical approach provided insight into the mechanism of CO insertion. The substrate scope could be extended to isonitriles.
