Direct Conversion of Benzothiadiazole to Benzimidazole: New Benzimidazole‐Derived Metal–Organic Frameworks with Adjustable Honeycomb‐Like Cavities

Thiadiazole-Functionalized Th/Zr-UiO-66 for Efficient C2H2/CO2 Separation

Adsorptive separation technology provides an effective approach for separating gases with similar physicochemical properties, such as the purification of acetylene (C2H2) from carbon dioxide (CO2). The high designability and tunability of metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbents make them ideal design platforms for this challenging separation. Herein, we employ an isoreticular functionalization strategy to fine-tune the pore environment of Zr- and Th-based UiO-66 by the immobilization of the benzothiadiazole group via bottom-up synthesis. The functionalized UPC-120 exhibits an enhanced C2H2/CO2 separation performance, which is confirmed by adsorption isotherms, dynamic breakthrough curves, and theoretical simulations. The synergy of ligand functionalization and metal ion fine-tuning guided by isoreticular chemistry provides a new perspective for the design and development of adsorbents for challenging gas separation processes.

Controllable Synthesis of TbIII Metal-Organic Frameworks with Reversible Luminescence Sensing for Benzaldehyde Vapor

Two novel lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the formulas [Tb(bidc)(Hbidc)(H₂O)]_n (JXUST-20) and {[Tb₃(bidc)₄(HCOO)(DMF)]·solvents}_n (JXUST-21) were synthesized based on 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-4,7-dicarboxylic acid (H₂BTDC) under solvothermal conditions. Interestingly, benzimidazole-4,7-dicarboxylic acid (H₂bidc) was formed in situ using H₂BTDC as the starting material. The self-assembly process of the targeted MOFs with different topological structures can be controlled by the solvents and concentration of the reactants. Luminescence experiments show that JXUST-20 and JXUST-21 exhibit strong yellow-green emission. JXUST-20 and JXUST-21 can selectively sense benzaldehyde (BzH) via a luminescence quenching effect with detection limits of 15.3 and 1.44 ppm, respectively. In order to expand the practical application of MOF materials, mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) have been constructed by mixing targeted MOFs and poly(methyl methacrylate) in a N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution, which can also be used for BzH vapor sensing. Therefore, the first case of MMMs derived from Tb^III MOFs has been developed for the reversible detection of BzH vapor, providing a simple and efficient platform for the future detection of volatile organic compounds.

Control of selectivity in the preparation of 2-substituted benzoazoles by adjusting the surface hydrophobicity in two solid-based sulfonic acid catalysts

A series of metal-free tandem reactions for the synthesis of pharmaceutically important 2-substituted benzoazoles from isothiocyanates and 2-aminothiophenol under catalyst-free conditions in the presence of Et-PMO-Me-PrSO₃H (1a) and SBA-15-PrSO₃H (1b) as solid acids were carried out in a highly selective way under solvent free conditions. A significant selectivity changeover toward either 2-mercaptobenzoxazole or 2-aminobenzoazole derivatives could be achieved by changing the employed catalyst from the relatively hydrophobic material 1a to the more hydrophilic catalyst 1b. This simple experimental procedure with a novel selective approach toward benzoazoles accompanied by green and reusable catalysts could be considered as an alternative to the existing methods for the synthesis of 2-substituted benzoazole derivatives.

The mol-ecular and crystal structures of 2-(3-hy-droxy-prop-yl)benzimidazole and its nitrate salt

2-(3-Hy-droxy-prop-yl)-1H-benzimidazole, C10H12N2O, which has potential biological activity, can be used as a ligand for complexation with metals. This compound is an electron donor, due to the lone pair of the nitro-gen atom in the imidazole ring. This nitro-gen atom also acts as a proton acceptor. In the crystalline phase, the nitrate salt, namely, 2-(3-hy-droxy-prop-yl)-1H-benzim-id-azol-3-ium nitrate, C10H13N2O+·NO3 -, has been studied. The protonation of the 2-(3-hy-droxy-prop-yl)benzimidazole unit results in significant delocalization of the electron density within the imidazole ring. The salt formation leads to variations in the inter-molecular inter-actions, which were studied by analysis of the Hirshfeld surfaces and two-dimensional fingerprint plots.
