Unprecedented Inversion of Selectivity and Extraordinary Difference in the Complexation of Trivalent f Elements by Diastereomers of a Methylated Diglycolamide

Atomistic Insights into Structure and Dynamics of Neodymium(III) Complexation with a Bis-lactam Phenanthroline Ligand in the Organic Phase

Rare-earth elements (REEs) such as neodymium are critical materials needed in many important technologies, and rigid neutral bis-lactam-1,10-phenanthroline (BLPhen) ligands show one of the highest extraction performance for complexing Nd(III) in REE uptake and separation processes. However, the local structure of the complexes formed between BLPhen and Nd(III) in a typical organic solvent such as dichloroethane (DCE) is unclear. Here, we perform first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations to unveil the structure of complexes formed by BLPhen with Nd(NO₃)₃ in the DCE solvent. BLPhen can bind to Nd(III) in either 1:1 or 2:1 fashion. In the 1:1 complex, three nitrates bind to Nd(III) via the bidentate mode in the first solvation shell, leading to the formation of a neutral complex, [Nd(BLPhen)(NO₃)₃]⁰, in the organic phase. In contrast, there are two nitrates in the first solvation shell in the 2:1 complex, creating a charged complex, [Nd(BLPhen)₂(NO₃)₂]⁺. The third nitrate was found to be far away from the metal center, migrating to the outer solvation shell. Our simulations show that the binding pocket formed by the two rigid BLPhen ligands allows ample space for two nitrates to bind to the Nd(III) center from opposite sides. Our findings of two nitrates in the first solvation shell of the 2:1 complex and the corresponding bond distances agree well with the available crystal structure. This study represents the first accurate FPMD modeling of the BLPhen-Nd(III) complexes in an explicit organic solvent and opens the door to more atomistic understanding of REE separations from first principles.

Spectroscopic investigation of the different complexation and extraction properties of diastereomeric diglycolamide ligands

(2R,2′S)-2,2′-oxybis-(N,N-didecylpropanamide) (cis-mTDDGA) and (2R,2′R)-2,2′-oxybis-(N,N-didecylpropanamide) (trans-mTDDGA) were studied using time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS), vibronic side-band spectroscopy (VSBS) and density functional theory calculations (DFT) to find reasons for their different extraction properties. Stability constants of the respective Cm(III) and Eu(III) complexes show cis-mTDDGA to be the superior ligand which is in agreement with results from extraction experiments. cis-mTDDGA extracts Cm(III) and Eu(III) as 1:3 complexes. In case of trans-mTDDGA, 1:2 complexes of the form [M(trans-mTDDGA)2(η1-NO3)(H2O)2]2+ (M = Cm, Eu) are extracted additionally to the 1:3 complexes. VSBS and DFT confirm the presence of inner-sphere nitrate in the 1:2 complex.

Gamma radiolytic stability of the novel modified diglycolamide 2,2'-oxybis(N,N-didecylpropanamide) (mTDDGA) for grouped actinide extraction

Reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel aims at improving resource efficiency and reducing its radiotoxicity and heat production in the long term. The necessary separation of certain metal ions from the spent fuel solutions can be achieved using different solvent extraction processes. For the scenario of the EURO-GANEX process, the use of the new, modified diglycolamide 2,2′-oxybis(N,N-didecylpropanamide) (mTDDGA) was recently proposed to simplify the current solvent composition and reduce extraction of fission products. Before further developing the process based on this new ligand, its stability under ionizing radiation conditions needs to be studied. For this reason, gamma irradiation experiments were conducted followed by analyses with high performance liquid chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer (HPLC-MS). The determined degradation rate of mTDDGA was found to be lower than that of the reference molecule N,N,N′,N′-tetra-n-octyl-diglycolamide (TODGA). Many identified degradation compounds of both molecules are analogues showing the same bond breaking, although also unreported de-methylation, double/triple de-alkylation and n-dodecane addition products were observed.

The radiolysis behavior of a new diglycolamide for solvent extraction of actinides and lanthanides was studied. The observed degradation rate was lower than for the reference molecule and 22 degradation compounds were identified.

Pyrochlore Compounds From Atomistic Simulations

Pyrochlore compounds (A 2 B 2O7) have a large applicability in various branches of science and technology. These materials are considered for use as effective ionic conductors for solid state batteries or as matrices for immobilization of actinide elements, amongst many other applications. In this contribution we discuss the simulation-based effort made in the Institute of Energy and Climate Research at Forschungszentrum Jülich and partner institutions regarding reliable computation of properties of pyrochlore and defect fluorite compounds. In the scope of this contribution, we focus on the investigation of dopant incorporation, defect formation and anion migration, as well as understanding of order-disorder transitions in these compounds. We present new, accurate simulated data on incorporation of U, Np, Pu, Am and Cm actinide elements into pyrochlores, activation energies for oxygen migration and radiation damage-induced structural changes in these materials. All the discussed simulation results are combined with available experimental data to provide a reliable description of properties of investigated materials. We demonstrate that a synergy of computed and experimental data leads to a superior characterization of pyrochlores, which could not be easily achieved by either of these methods when applied separately.

Effect of diluent on the extraction of europium(iii) and americium(iii) with N,N,N′,N′-tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA)

Solvent extraction of Eu³⁺ and Am³⁺via N,N,N′,N'-tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA) dissolved in different molecular diluents was studied. The diluent types used in this work were primary and secondary alcohols, secondary ketones and alkanes. Effects of concentration of extracting agent, temperature, diluent type and its carbon chain length on the extractions were determined. Distribution ratios of Eu³⁺ and Am³⁺ showed high dependence on the diluent type as well as the carbon chain length within the same type of diluent. The highest distribution ratios for both Eu³⁺ and Am³⁺ as well as the separation factors of Eu³⁺ over Am³⁺ were observed in the alkane diluents. Unexpectedly high distribution ratios for Eu³⁺ and Am³⁺ were observed in polar diluents with 5 carbon atoms in the chain, clearly standing out against the general trends. It was found that Eu³⁺ and Am³⁺ extraction via TODGA is enthalpy driven in all the studied diluents and that extraction is more exothermic in alkane diluents. Analysis of the stoichiometry of the extracted complexes shows that the average ligand number of TODGA molecules in the extracted complex is lower for Am³⁺ compared to Eu³⁺ except for with alkane diluents.
