Exploration of New Birefringent Crystals in Bismuth d0 Transition Metal Selenites

Pb2(SeO3)(SiF6): the first selenite fluorosilicate with a wide bandgap and large birefringence achieved through perfluorinated group modification

Birefringent crystals serve as the core elements of polarizing optical devices. However, the inherent challenge of balancing bandgap and birefringence poses a significant hurdle in designing crystals with excellent overall performance. In this study, we propose a novel approach, namely modification with perfluorinated groups, to achieve dual enhancement of the bandgap and birefringence of selenite materials. We have successfully synthesized the first selenite fluorosilicate, namely, Pb2(SeO3)(SiF6). This compound exhibits a three-dimensional structure composed of two-dimensional lead selenite layers bridged by SiF6 octahedrons. Notably, by introducing a perfluorinated SiF6 group, the bandgap of the lead selenite compound has been expanded to 4.4 eV. Furthermore, Pb2(SeO3)(SiF6) demonstrates a large birefringence (0.161 @ 546 nm), surpassing most of the selenite compounds with a bandgap larger than 4.2 eV. Theoretical calculations suggest that the large birefringence of Pb2(SeO3)(SiF6) can be attributed to the synergistic effects of SeO3, PbO4 and PbO3F4 polyhedrons. Our research not only pioneers a new system for selenite materials, enriching the diversity of selenite structures, but also provides a design methodology for obtaining wide bandgap birefringent selenite.

A2Hgx(SeO3)y (A = K, Rb, Cs): Three Alkali Metal Mercury Selenites Featuring Unique 1D [HgOm(SeO3)n]∞ Chains

Herein, three alkali metal mercury selenites, K2Hg2(SeO3)3, Rb2Hg2(SeO3)3, and Cs2Hg3(SeO3)4, were successfully obtained by a hydrothermal method. The three compounds featured same one-dimensional (1D) [HgOm(SeO3)n]∞ chain structure that consisting of distorted Hg-O polyhedra and SeO3 triangular pyramids with stereochemically active lone pair (SCALP) electrons. Interestingly, the rich coordination environment of Hg atoms and the size difference of alkali metal cations lead to diverse arrangement of SeO3 groups, which makes them exhibit different birefringence. The band gaps of the three compounds indicate that they are potential ultraviolet (UV) optical materials. Detailed theoretical calculations demonstrate that the combined effects of SeO3 triangular pyramids and Hg-O polyhedra are responsible for the optical characteristics of the reported compounds.

RbCl·(H2SeO3)2: A Salt-Inclusion Selenite Featuring Short UV Cut-Off Edge and Large Birefringence

Birefringent materials are key components to control the light polarization in laser science and technology as well as optical communication. However, the performance of current commercial birefringent materials has been limited by the magnitude of birefringence, optical transparency range, or the attainability of large-scale single crystals. To explore new birefringent materials, we strategically incorporated a lone pair cation (Se⁴⁺) with large optical anisotropy, an alkali metal, and halogen ions (Rb⁺ and Cl^-) with superior UV transparent capacity; thus a new compound, RbCl·(H₂SeO₃)₂, was successfully discovered with the aid of the facile hydrothermal method. Interestingly, Rb-Cl chains locate in the [H₂SeO₃]_∞ skeleton, which makes RbCl·(H₂SeO₃)₂ a salt-inclusion selenite. Millimeter-sized single crystals (up to 4 × 2 × 1 mm³) were obtained, and the transmittance spectrum revealed that its UV cut-off edge can be as low as 230 nm. In addition, the calculated birefringence of RbCl·(H₂SeO₃)₂ is 0.14 at 589 nm that is similar to the birefringent value of famous α-BaB₂O₄. Wide UV transparency, large birefringence, and feasible crystal growth make RbCl·(H₂SeO₃)₂ a new member of birefringent materials for UV light applications.

K3ZrF4(SbF4)(SbF5) and K8(ZrF6)(Sb2Zr2F20): Two Zirconium Fluoroantimonites with Low Dimensional Structures and Wide Transparency Range

The first examples of zirconium fluoroantimonites, namely, K₃ZrF₄(SbF₄)(SbF₅) and K₈(ZrF₆)(Sb₂Zr₂F₂₀), have been successfully synthesized by facial hydrothermal reactions. K₃ZrF₄(SbF₄)(SbF₅) features a unique 1D (ZrSb₂F₁₃)^3- double-chain structure, while K₈(ZrF₆)(Sb₂Zr₂F₂₀) displays a special 0D construction composed of Zr₂Sb₂F₂₀ tetranuclear clusters and isolated ZrF₆ octahedra. The two fluorides can exhibit a broad transparency range with almost no absorption peaks from ultraviolet to near-IR. For K₈(ZrF₆)(Sb₂Zr₂F₂₀), a phase transformation was found before decomposition. The band structures, density of states, and linear-optical properties for the title compounds were also obtained.

KRE(CO3)2 (RE = Eu, Gd, Tb): new mixed metal carbonates with strong photoluminescence and large birefringence

Three new potassium rare earth carbonates KRE(CO3)2 (RE = Eu, Gd, Tb) with strong photoluminescence and large birefringence were synthesized successfully.

Role of fluorine on the structure and second-harmonic-generation property of inorganic selenites and tellurites

Fluorine, as the most electronegative element, can replace the oxygen ligands of functional groups under given conditions. These fluoride groups are more or less different from the pure oxide groups in composition, symmetry, polarizability, transmittancy, etc. The rational use of these differences is expected to improve the probability of noncentrosymmetric structures and the comprehensive performance of second-harmonic-generation (SHG) materials. In this feature article, we introduce the recent developments in fluoride selenite and tellurite SHG materials together with highlighting our contributions, including Se(IV) and Te(IV) compounds with (i) d⁰ transition metal oxyfluoride octahedron, (ii) IIIA metal oxyfluoride octahedron, (iii) fluoride lone pair cation polyhedron, and (iv) other fluoride polyhedron. The future perspectives of fluoride selenite and tellurite SHG materials are also discussed.

M(B(SeO3)3)H2O (M = Al, Ga): the first boroselenites with a unique sandwich like double-layer structure

Exploration of new types of borates is important because of their promising applications in diverse fields. Two new boroselenites, namely, M(B(SeO₃)₃)H₂O (M = Al, Ga), which represent the first IIIA metal boroselenite, were synthesized by hydrothermal reactions. M(B(SeO₃)₃)H₂O (M = Al, Ga) possesses a unique sandwich like double-layer structure formed by two 2D [MSe₂O₈]^5- layers interconnected by 1D [BSeO₅]^3- chains. More interestingly, both compounds display large band gaps (4.86/4.79 eV) and moderate birefringences (Δn = 0.063/0.064 at 1064 nm) based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Centrosymmetric Sb4O5SO4 and Noncentrosymmetric Sb4O4(SO4)(OH)2 Induced by Lone Pair Stereoactivity

Introducing stereochemically active lone-pair Sb³⁺ cations into sulfates, two three-dimensional (3D) antimony-sulfates, Sb₄O₅SO₄ (1) and Sb₄O(SO₄)(OH)₂ (2), were achieved under moderate hydrothermal conditions. Both structures are constructed by tetranuclear-{Sb₄}-clusters-based layers and SO₄ tetrahedra. However, owing to the different packing patterns of the layers, they display different characteristics: 1 exhibits a centrosymmetric structure while 2 possesses a noncentrosymmetric structure. UV-vis spectra show that they possess wide band gaps. Sb₄O(SO₄)(OH)₂ is nonlinear optical (NLO) active with a second-harmonic generation (SHG) response of ∼1.2 times of KH₂PO₄, together with the phase-matchable capacity, endowing it a promising UV NLO material. The first-principle calculations were performed to elucidate the structure-property relationships. The results indicate that the lone pair stereoactivity of Sb³⁺ provides the large contribution to the macroscopic SHG effect.

Y2(Te4O10)(SO4): a new sulfate tellurite with a unique Te4O10 polyanion and large birefringence

Y₂(Te₄O₁₀)(SO₄), featuring a unique (Te₄O₁₀)⁴⁻ polyanion, exhibits a large birefringence (0.124@1064), wide energy band gap (4.1 eV) and high thermal stability (>700 °C), which make it a potential birefringent material.
