Abstract
Clean and sustainable energy needs the development of advanced heterogeneous catalysts as they are of vital importance for electrochemical transformation reactions in renewable energy conversion and storage devices. Advances in nanoscience and material chemistry have afforded great opportunities for the design and optimization of nanostructured electrocatalysts with high efficiency and practical durability. In this review article, we specifically emphasize the synthetic methodologies for the versatile surface overcoating engineering reported to date for optimal electrocatalysts. We discuss the recent progress in the development of surface overcoating-derived electrocatalysts potentially applied in polymer electrolyte fuel cells and water electrolyzers by correlating catalyst intrinsic structures with electrocatalytic properties. Finally, we present the opportunities and perspectives of surface overcoating engineering for the design of advanced (electro)catalysts and their deep exploitation in a broad scope of applications.

Abstract
Direct methanol fuel cell technology implementation mainly depends on the development of non-platinum catalysts with good CO tolerance. Among the widely studied transition-metal catalysts, cobalt oxide with distinctively higher catalytic efficiency is highly desirable. Here, we have evolved a simple method of synthesizing cobalt tungsten oxide hydroxide hydrate nanowires with DNA (CTOOH/DNA) and without incorporating DNA (CTOOH) by microwave irradiation and subsequently employed them as electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation. Following this, we examined the influence of incorporating DNA into CTOOH by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The enhanced electrochemical surface area of CTOOH offered readily available electroactive sites and resulted in a higher oxidation current at a lower onset potential for methanol oxidation. On the other hand, CTOOH/DNA exhibited improved CO tolerance and it was evident from the chronoamperometric studies. Herein, we noticed only a 2.5 and 1.8% drop at CTOOH- and CTOOH/DNA-modified electrodes, respectively, after 30 min. Overall, from the results, it was evident that the presence of DNA in CTOOH played an important role in the rapid removal of adsorbed intermediates and regenerated active catalyst centers possibly by creating high density surface defects around the nanochains than bare CTOOH.

Abstract
In this work, a self-supported electrode has been designed and fabricated based on carbon cloth-supported polyaniline array and Pt nanosheets (Pt-PANI-CC). PANI array was firstly loaded on the surface of CC via chronoamperometry technique, and then, Pt nanosheets were deposited on the per-grown PANI array through amperometric measurement. The hierarchical structure of Pt-PANI-CC electrode and unique sheet-like Pt nanoparticles offered large specific surface and response centers. The electrochemical sensor based on Pt-PANI-CC electrode has been successfully constructed for detection of ammonia. The experiment results demonstrated that Pt-PANI-CC displayed great catalytic activity for electro-oxidation of ammonia and exhibited acceptable performances for sensing ammonia with low detection limit of 77.2 nM and wide linear range from 0.5 μM to 550 μM. Moreover, the anti-interference ability, reusability, reproducibility and stability of sensor have been investigated and showed great performances. This work provides a promising way for designing self-supported sensing electrode toward a wide electrochemical detection.

Abstract
Control over composition and morphology of nanocrystals (NCs) is significant to develop advanced catalysts applicable to polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells and further overcome the performance limitations. Here, we present a facile synthesis of Pd-Pt alloy ultrathin assembled nanosheets (UANs) by regulating the growth behavior of Pd-Pt nanostructures. Iodide ions supplied from KI play as capping agents for the {111} plane to promote 2-dimensional (2D) growth of Pd and Pt, and the optimal concentrations of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride and ascorbic acid result in the generation of Pd-Pt alloy UANs in high yield. The prepared Pd-Pt alloy UANs exhibited the remarkable enhancement of the catalytic activity and stability toward ethanol oxidation reaction compared to irregular-shaped Pd-Pt alloy NCs, commercial Pd/C, and commercial Pt/C. Our results confirm that the Pd-Pt alloy composition and ultrathin 2D morphology offer high accessible active sites and favorable electronic structure for enhancing electrocatalytic activity.
