Facile and Large‐Scale Fabrication of Sub‐3 nm PtNi Nanoparticles Supported on Porous Carbon Sheet: A Bifunctional Material for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction and Hydrogenation

One-Pot Synthesis of Ultra-Small Pt Nanoparticles-Loaded Nitrogen-Doped Mesoporous Carbon Nanotube for Efficient Catalytic Reaction

In this study, Pt nanoparticles-loaded nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon nanotube (Pt/NMCT) was successfully synthesized through a polydopamine-mediated "one-pot" co-deposition strategy. The Pt source was introduced during the co-deposition of polydopamine and silica on the surface of SiO2 nanowire (SiO2 NW), and Pt atoms were fixed in the skeleton by the chelation of polydopamine. Thus, in the subsequent calcination process in nitrogen atmosphere, the growth and agglomeration of Pt nanoparticles were effectively restricted, achieving the in situ loading of uniformly dispersed, ultra-small (~2 nm) Pt nanoparticles. The method is mild, convenient, and does not require additional surfactants, reducing agents, or stabilizers. At the same time, the use of the dual silica templates (SiO2 NW and the co-deposited silica nanoclusters) brought about a hierarchical pore structure with a high specific surface area (620 m2 g-1) and a large pore volume (1.46 cm3 g-1). The loading process of Pt was studied by analyzing the electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of the intermediate products. The catalytic performance of Pt/NMCT was investigated in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. The Pt/NMCT with a hierarchical pore structure had an apparent reaction rate constant of 0.184 min-1, significantly higher than that of the sample, without the removal of the silica templates to generate the hierarchical porosity (0.017 min-1). This work provides an outstanding contribution to the design of supported noble metal catalysts and also highlights the importance of the hierarchical pore structure for catalytic activity.

N-Doped Carbon Nanotube Shell Encapsulating the NiFe Metal Core for Enhanced Catalytic Stability in Methanol Oxidation Reaction by the Structural Cooperation Mechanism

Exploitation of high-efficiency catalysts toward methanol oxidation is a pivotal step to promote the commercialization of direct methanol fuel cells. Herein, a strategy is demonstrated to prepare nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes with NiFe metal particles (NiFe@N-CNT) as the carrier material of Pt nanoparticles. Combining SEM and TEM, NiFe metal particles are fully encapsulated in N-CNTs, and they form the metal core and carbon nanotube shell structure based on the structural cooperation mechanism. Surprisingly, the as-prepared Pt/NiFe@N-CNT catalyst shows superior catalytic activity (1023 mA mg^-1_Pt) compared to commercial Pt/C (392 mA mg^-1_Pt), Pt/Ni@N-CNT (331 mA mg^-1_Pt), and Pt/Fe@N-CNT (592 mA mg^-1_Pt). After 1000 cycles, Pt/NiFe@N-CNT maintains the optimal catalytic activity (588 mA mg^-1_Pt), and its mass activity loss is 42.5%, which is better than those of commercial Pt/C (64.0%), Pt/Ni@N-CNT (67.7%), and Pt/Fe@N-CNT (59.6%) catalysts, indicating that the Pt/NiFe@N-CNT catalyst achieves excellent catalytic activity and stability, which stems chiefly from the homodispersed Pt nanoparticles and the generation of the metal core-carbon nanotube shell based on the structural cooperation mechanism. This study reports the facile construction of a metal core-carbon nanotube shell structure, which intrinsically ameliorates structural collapse of carrier material, thereby improving the catalytic stability of the Pt-based catalyst and broadening the view for design of other desire catalysts in methanol oxidation.

Galvanostatically Deposited PtNi Thin-Films as Electrocatalysts for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

The synthesis of hybrid platinum materials is fundamental to enable alkaline water electrolysis for cost-effective H2 generation. In this work, we have used a galvanostatic method to co-deposit PtNi films onto polycrystalline gold. The surface concentrations of Ni (ΓNi ) and Pt (ΓPt ) were calculated from electrochemical measurements; the ΓPt /ΓNi ratio and electrocatalytic activity of these materials towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1 M KOH show a strong dependence on the current density pulse applied during the electrodeposition. Analysis of the Tafel parameters hints that, on these deposits, HER proceeds through a Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism. The galvanostatically deposited PtNi layers present a high current output per Pt gram, 3199 A gPt -1 , which is significantly larger compared to other PtNi-based materials obtained by more extended and more complex synthesis methods.

PtNi Alloy Coated in Porous Nitrogen-Doped Carbon as Highly Efficient Catalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reactions

The development of low platinum loading hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts with high activity and stability is of great significance to the practical application of hydrogen energy. This paper reports a simple method to synthesize a highly efficient HER catalyst through coating a highly dispersed PtNi alloy on porous nitrogen-doped carbon (MNC) derived from the zeolite imidazolate skeleton. The catalyst is characterized and analyzed by physical characterization methods, such as XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, XPS, and LSV, EIS, it, v-t, etc. The optimized sample exhibits an overpotential of only 26 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm⁻², outperforming commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (33 mV). The synthesized catalyst shows a relatively fast HER kinetics as evidenced by the small Tafel slope of 21.5 mV dec⁻¹ due to the small charge transfer resistance, the alloying effect between Pt and Ni, and the interaction between PtNi alloy and carrier.

Facile Synthesis of MoP-RuP2 with Abundant Interfaces to Boost Hydrogen Evolution Reactions in Alkaline Media

Exploiting efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) is important for boosting the large-scale applications of hydrogen energy. Herein, MoP-RuP₂ encapsulated in N,P-codoped carbon (MoP-RuP₂@NPC) with abundant interfaces were prepared via a facile avenue with the low-toxic melamine phosphate as the phosphorous resource. Moreover, the obtained electrocatalyst possessed a porous nanostructure, had abundant exposed active sites and improved the mass transport during the electrocatalytic process. Due to the above merits, the prepared MoP-RuP₂@NPC delivered a greater electrocatalytic performance for HERs (50 mV@10 mA cm⁻²) relative to RuP₂@NPC (120 mV) and MoP@NPC (195 mV) in 1 M KOH. Moreover, an ultralow potential of 1.6 V was required to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm⁻² in the two-electrode configuration for overall water splitting. For practical applications, intermittent solar energy, wind energy and thermal energy were utilized to drive the electrolyzer to generate hydrogen gas. This work provides a novel and facile strategy for designing highly efficient and stable nanomaterials toward hydrogen production.

Cobalt-promoted fabrication of 3D carbon with a nanotube-sheet mutual support structure: scalable preparation of a high-performance anode material for Li-ion batteries

Currently, the design of carbon-based composite as a high-performance anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) presents challenges for commercial application. Herein, we developed a three-dimensional carbon-based material with a nanotube-sheet mutual support structure (MS-CNTS) engineered by the catalytic effect of Co species. The present work highlights a concise 'solvent-free' synthetic method allowing for large-scale output, which is potentially available for low cost commercial use. With the readily available acetylacetonate and cobalt (II) acetylacetonate as starting chemicals, this nanostructured carbonaceous material is fabricated with aldol condensation to construct a Co-contained carbon-link network polymer precursor followed by annealing under argon. It is composed of brim-curled graphene-like carbon nanosheets and carbon nanotubes, which support each other's structures to effectively avoid agglomeration. Therefore, it enables high performance in LIBs. In spite of the trace amount of cobalt, the carbon-based MS-CNTS anode delivers a high charge capacity of 1028 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, high rate capacity of 495 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1, and ultra-long cycling life with a very low capacity decay of 0.008% per cycle over 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g-1, accompanied by 100% Coulombic efficiency. From full cell measurements, we further confirm the considerable promise of MS-CNTS as anodes with a long cycling life.

Computationally generated maps of surface structures and catalytic activities for alloy phase diagrams

To facilitate the rational design of alloy catalysts, we introduce a method for rapidly calculating the structure and catalytic properties of a substitutional alloy surface that is in equilibrium with the underlying bulk phase. We implement our method by developing a way to generate surface cluster expansions that explicitly account for the lattice parameter of the bulk structure. This approach makes it possible to computationally map the structure of an alloy surface and statistically sample adsorbate binding energies at every point in the alloy phase diagram. When combined with a method for predicting catalytic activities from adsorbate binding energies, maps of catalytic activities at every point in the phase diagram can be created, enabling the identification of synthesis conditions likely to result in highly active catalysts. We demonstrate our approach by analyzing Pt-rich Pt-Ni catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction, finding 2 regions in the phase diagram that are predicted to result in highly active catalysts. Our analysis indicates that the Pt3Ni(111) surface, which has the highest known specific activity for the oxygen reduction reaction, is likely able to achieve its high activity through the formation of an intermetallic phase with L12 order. We use the generated surface structure and catalytic activity maps to demonstrate how the intermetallic nature of this phase leads to high catalytic activity and discuss how the underlying principles can be used in catalysis design. We further discuss the importance of surface phases and demonstrate how they can dramatically affect catalytic activity.
