Synthesis and Self‐Assembly of Mixed‐Graft Block Copolymers

Block Copolymers of Polyolefins with Polyacrylates: Analyzing and Improving the Blocking Efficiencies Using MILRad/ATRP Approach

Despite their industrial ubiquity, polyolefin-polyacrylate block copolymers are challenging to synthesize due to the distinct polymerization pathways necessary for respective blocks. This study utilizes MILRad, metal-organic insertion light-initiated radical polymerization, to synthesize polyolefin-b-poly(methyl acrylate) copolymer by combining palladium-catalyzed insertion-coordination polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Brookhart-type Pd complexes used for the living polymerization of olefins are homolytically cleaved by blue-light irradiation, generating polyolefin-based macroradicals, which are trapped with functional nitroxide derivatives forming ATRP macroinitiators. ATRP in the presence of Cu(0), that is, supplemental activators and reducing agents , is used to polymerize methyl acrylate. An increase in the functionalization efficiency of up to 71% is demonstrated in this study by modifying the light source and optimizing the radical trapping condition. Regardless of the radical trapping efficiency, essentially quantitative chain extension of polyolefin-Br macroinitiator with acrylates is consistently demonstrated, indicating successful second block formation.

Self-assembly of amphiphilic asymmetric comb-like copolymers with responsive rigid side chains

Amphiphilic asymmetric comb-like copolymers (AACCs) exhibit distinct self-assembly behaviours due to their unique architecture. However, the synthetic difficulties of well-defined AACCs have prohibited a systematic understanding of the architecture-morphology relationship. In this work, we conducted dissipative particle dynamics simulations to investigate the self-assembly behaviours of AACCs with responsive rigid side chains in selective solvents. The effects of side chain length, number of branches, and spacers on the morphology of aggregates were investigated by mapping out morphology diagrams. Besides, the numbers and surface areas of aggregates clearly depicted the morphological transitions during the self-assembly process. Moreover, the rod-to-coil conformation transitions were simulated to explore the stimuli-responsive behaviour of the AACCs with responsive rigid side chains by adjusting the bond angle parameter of the rigid chains. The results indicated that without the support of the rigid chains, the assembly structure collapsed, leading to the tube-to-channelized micelles and one-compartment-to-multicompartment vesicle morphology transformations. The simulation results are consistent with earlier experimental results, which can provide theoretical guidance for assembly toward desired nanostructures.

Hierarchically Structured Nanocomposites via Mixed-Graft Block Copolymer Templating: Achieving Controlled Nanostructure and Functionality

Integrating inorganic and polymerized organic functionalities to create composite materials presents an efficient strategy for the discovery and fabrication of multifunctional materials. The characteristics of these composites go beyond a simple sum of individual component properties; they are profoundly influenced by the spatial arrangement of these components and the resulting homo-/hetero-interactions. In this work, we develop a facile and highly adaptable approach for crafting nanostructured polymer-inorganic composites, leveraging hierarchically assembling mixed-graft block copolymers (mGBCPs) as templates. These mGBCPs, composed of diverse polymeric side chains that are covalently tethered with a defined sequence to a linear backbone polymer, self-assemble into ordered hierarchical structures with independently tuned nano- and mesoscale lattice features. Through the coassembly of mGBCPs with diversely sized inorganic fillers such as metal ions (ca. 0.1 nm), metal oxide clusters (0.5-2 nm), and metallic nanoparticles (>2 nm), we create three-dimensional filler arrays with controlled interfiller separation and arrangement. Multiple types of inorganic fillers are simultaneously integrated into the mGBCP matrix by introducing orthogonal interactions between distinct fillers and mGBCP side chains. This results in nanocomposites where each type of filler is selectively segregated into specific nanodomains with matrix-defined orientations. The developed coassembly strategy offers a versatile and scalable pathway for hierarchically structured nanocomposites, unlocking new possibilities for advanced materials in the fields of optoelectronics, sensing, and catalysis.

Design of Microstructure-Engineered Polymers for Energy and Environmental Conservation

With the ever-growing demand for sustainability, designing polymeric materials using readily accessible feedstocks provides potential solutions to address the challenges in energy and environmental conservation. Complementing the prevailing strategy of varying chemical composition, engineering microstructures of polymer chains by precisely controlling their chain length distribution, main chain regio-/stereoregularity, monomer or segment sequence, and architecture creates a powerful toolbox to rapidly access diversified material properties. In this Perspective, we lay out recent advances in utilizing appropriately designed polymers in a wide range of applications such as plastic recycling, water purification, and solar energy storage and conversion. With decoupled structural parameters, these studies have established various microstructure-function relationships. Given the progress outlined here, we envision that the microstructure-engineering strategy will accelerate the design and optimization of polymeric materials to meet sustainability criteria.

Understanding interfacial segregation in polymer blend films with random and mixed side chain bottlebrush copolymer additives

Bottlebrush polymers are complex macromolecules with tunable physical properties dependent on the chemistry and architecture of both the side chains and the backbone. Prior work has demonstrated that bottlebrush polymer additives can be used to control the interfacial properties of blends with linear polymers but has not specifically addressed the effects of bottlebrush side chain microstructures. Here, using a combination of experiments and self-consistent field theory (SCFT) simulations, we investigated the effects of side chain microstructures by comparing the segregation of bottlebrush additives having random copolymer side chains with bottlebrush additives having a mixture of two different homopolymer side chain chemistries. Specifically, we synthesized bottlebrush polymers with either poly(styrene-ran-methyl methacrylate) side chains or with a mixture of polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) side chains. The bottlebrush additives were matched in terms of PS and PMMA compositions, and they were blended with linear PS or PMMA chains that ranged in length from shorter to longer than the bottlebrush side chains. Experiments revealed similar behaviors of the two types of bottlebrushes, with a slight preference for mixed side-chain bottlebrushes at the film surface. SCFT simulations were qualitatively consistent with experimental observations, predicting only slight differences in the segregation of bottlebrush additives driven by side chain microstructures. Specifically, these slight differences were driven by the chemistries of the bottlebrush polymer joints and side chain end-groups, which were entropically repelled and attracted to interfaces, respectively. Using SCFT, we also demonstrated that the interfacial behaviors were dominated by entropic effects with high molecular weight linear polymers, leading to enrichment of bottlebrush near interfaces. Surprisingly, the SCFT simulations showed that the chemistry of the joints connecting the bottlebrush backbones and side chains played a more significant role compared with the side chain end groups in affecting differences in surface excess of bottlebrushes with random and mixed side chains. This work provides new insights into the effects of side chain microstructure on segregation of bottlebrush polymer additives.

Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Thermoresponsive Biohybrid Graft Copolymers Based on a Combination of Passerini Multicomponent Reaction and Molecular Recognition

Amphiphilic graft copolymers exhibit fascinating self-assembly behaviors. Their molecular architectures significantly affect the morphology and functionality of the self-assemblies. Considering the potential application of amphiphilic graft copolymers in the fabrication of nanocarriers, it is essential to synthesize well-defined graft copolymers with desired functional groups. Herein, the Passerini reaction and molecular recognition are introduced to the synthesis of functional thermoresponsive graft copolymers. A bifunctional monomer 2-((adamantan-1-yl)amino)-1-(4-((2-bromo-2-methylpropanoyl)oxy)phenyl)-2-oxoethyl methacrylate (ABMA) with a bromo group for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and an adamantyl group for molecular recognition is synthesized through the Passerini reaction. The graft copolymers are prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation transfer (RAFT) copolymerization of ABMA and oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA) followed by RAFT end group removal and ATRP of di(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate (DEGMA) initiated by the ABMA units. The graft copolymer P(OEGMA-co-ABMA)-g-PDEGMA can be functionalized with β-cyclodextrin modified peptides, affording a thermoresponsive biohybrid graft copolymer. At a temperature above its lower critical solution temperature, the biohybrid graft copolymer self-assembles into peptide-modified polymersomes.

Branched Aggregates with Tunable Morphology via Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Azobenzene-Derived Molecular Double Brushes

Hierarchical self-assembly is one of the most effective approaches to fabricate nature-inspired materials with subtle nanostructures. We report a distinct hierarchical self-assembly process of molecular double brushes (MDBs) with each graft site carrying a poly(azobenzene-acrylate) (PAzo) chain and a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) chain. Asymmetric tapered worm (ATW) nanostructures with chain-end reactivity assembling from the azobenzene-derived MDBs serve as primary subunits to prepare branched supermicelles by increasing water content (C_w ) in THF/water. Various natural Antedon-shaped multiarm worm-like aggregates (MWAs) can be created via the particle-particle connection of ATWs. Intriguingly, the azobenzene moieties undergo trans-cis isomerization upon UV irradiation and further promote a morphology evolution of MWAs. Multiscale supermicelles comprised of starfish shapes with differing central body and arm morphologies (e.g., compare to the biological specimens Luidia ciliaris and Crossaster papposus) were prepared by manipulating irradiation time.

Microphase separation in the melts of diblock copolymers with amphiphilic blocks

Self-assembly of graft diblock copolymers is an actual topic in the development of materials with desirable properties. In the paper, microphase separation in a melt of the diblock copolymer with amphiphilic and non-amphiphilic blocks is investigated using the analytical theory in the strong segregation approximation. Non-amphiphilic blocks are strongly immiscible with the backbone chains of amphiphilic ones but miscible with their side chains. In the theory, the amphiphilic units are considered as dimers, which can easily orient at interfaces. In the case of weakly amphiphilic dimers, the interfacial tension at a flat interface is calculated using density-functional theory. The amphiphilicity effect leads to a decrease in the surface tension and, hence, to weakening of the block stretching and decrease of the spatial period of the structure. In the case of strongly amphiphilic dimers, the phase diagrams are calculated taking into account basic morphological types (spheres and inverse spheres of amphiphilic blocks, cylinders and inverse cylinders, and lamellae). If the amphiphilicity effects dominate, the characteristic size of the amphiphilic block domain is equal to the side chain length, spherical and cylindrical micelles are formed only at very low fractions of the amphiphilic blocks, the lamellae are formed at slightly larger factions, and the micelles from non-amphiphilic blocks are separated by thin interconnected layers from amphiphilic blocks in the broad range of compositions.

Direct synthesis of light-emitting triblock copolymers from RAFT polymerization

Poor Solvents Improve Yield of Grafting-Through Radical Polymerization of OEO19MA

Radical polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEO₁₉MA, M_n ∼ 950) at an initial monomer concentration of 150 mM was investigated as a function of solvent composition. Conventional and controlled radical polymerizations in anisole at 60 °C converged at approximately the same equilibrium monomer concentration ([M]_eq) of ∼38 mM, suggesting that livingness or diminished termination did not affect the thermodynamic parameters of polymerization. Conventional radical polymerizations (RPs) in anisole, dimethylformamide (DMF), toluene, and 1×PBS buffered water were taken to approximately 98% thermal initiator decomposition to determine [M]_eq at reaction completion within a broad temperature range. The enthalpy (ΔH_p) and entropy (ΔS_p^°) of polymerization were solvent-dependent. Polymerizations in 1×PBS were the most thermodynamically favorable, followed by those in DMF, toluene, and anisole. -ΔH_p and -ΔS_p increased with the square of the difference in the Hansen solubility parameters of poly(ethylene glycol) and the solvent. It is proposed that poor solvents favor polymer-polymer interactions over polymer-solvent interactions, which improves the thermodynamic polymerizability.

Efficient Synthesis of Asymmetric Miktoarm Star Polymers

Asymmetric miktoarm star polymers comprising an unequal number of chemically-distinct blocks connected at a common junction produce unique material properties, yet existing synthetic strategies are beleaguered by complicated reaction schemes that are restricted in both monomer scope and yield. Here, we introduce a new synthetic approach coined "μSTAR" - Miktoarm Synthesis by Termination After Ring-opening metathesis polymerization - that circumvents these traditional synthetic limitations by constructing the block-block junction in a scalable, one-pot process involving (1) grafting-through polymerization of a macromonomer followed by (2) in-situ enyne-mediated termination to install a single mikto-arm with exceptional efficiency. This modular μSTAR platform cleanly generates AB n and A(BA') n miktoarm star polymers with unprecedented versatility in the selection of A and B chemistries as demonstrated using many common polymer building blocks: poly(siloxane), poly(acrylate), poly(methacrylate), poly(ether), poly(ester), and poly(styrene). The average number of B or BA' arms (n) is easily controlled by the molar equivalents of macromonomer relative to Grubbs catalyst in the initial ring-opening metathesis polymerization step. While these materials are characterized by dispersity in n that arises from polymerization statistics, they self-assemble into mesophases that are identical to those predicted for precise miktoarm stars as evidenced by small-angle X-ray scattering experiments and self-consistent field theory simulations. In summary, the μSTAR technique provides a significant boost in design flexibility and synthetic simplicity while retaining the salient phase behavior of precise miktoarm star materials.

Synthesis and visualization of molecular brush-on-brush based hierarchically branched structures

An atom transfer radical polymerization-mediated sequential “graft-from” approach was developed to synthesize molecular brush-on-brush (MBoB)-based hierarchically branched polymers with readily tunable structural parameters.
