C−F Bond Activation Mediated by Phosphorus Compounds

Carbon-Fluorine Activation in the Gas Phase: The Reactions of Benzyl C-F Bonds and Silyl Cations

The activation of C-F bonds figures largely in both fundamental and applied chemical processes. Herein the activation of benzyl C-F bonds by silyl cations is examined both computationally and experimentally in the gas phase. The experimental rate constant values obtained herein have not heretofore been measured and provide insight into the intrinsic ability of silyl cations to activate C-F bonds. Trends in reactivity and correlations between theoretical and experimental data are discussed in the context of C-F bond cleavage.

Base-Promoted Nucleophilic Phosphorylation of Benzyl Fluorides via C(sp3)-F Cleavage

Herein, a transition-metal-free phosphorylation of benzyl fluorides with P(O)-H compounds is disclosed. In the presence of tBuOK, various benzyl fluorides react with P(O)-H compounds to produce the corresponding benzyl phosphine oxides, phosphinates, and phosphonates in good to high yields. This base-promoted phosphorylation reaction offers a facile and general strategy for the construction of a C(sp3)-P bond.

Metallomimetic C-F Activation Catalysis by Simple Phosphines

Delivering metallomimetic reactivity from simple p-block compounds is highly desirable in the search to replace expensive, scarce precious metals by cheap and abundant elements in catalysis. This contribution demonstrates that metallomimetic catalysis, involving facile redox cycling between the P(III) and P(V) oxidation states, is possible using only simple, cheap, and readily available trialkylphosphines without the need to enforce unusual geometries at phosphorus or use external oxidizing/reducing agents. Hydrodefluorination and aminodefluorination of a range of fluoroarenes was realized with good to very good yields under mild conditions. Experimental and computational mechanistic studies show that the phosphines undergo oxidative addition of the fluoroaromatic substrate via a Meisenheimer-like transition state to form a fluorophosphorane. This undergoes a pseudotransmetalation step with a silane, via initial fluoride transfer from P to Si, to give experimentally observed phosphonium ions. Hydride transfer from a hydridosilicate counterion then leads to a hydridophosphorane, which undergoes reductive elimination of the product to reform the phosphine catalyst. This behavior is analogous to many classical transition-metal-catalyzed reactions and so is a rare example of both functional and mechanistically metallomimetic behavior in catalysis by a main-group element system. Crucially, the reagents used are cheap, readily available commercially, and easy to handle, making these reactions a realistic prospect in a wide range of academic and industrial settings.

Boron-Centered Lewis Superacid through Redox-Active Ligands: Application in C-F and S-F Bond Activation

A series of redox-responsive ferrocenyl-substituted boranes and boronic esters were synthesized. Oxidation of the ferrocenyl ligand to the ferrocenium resulted in a drastic increase in the Lewis acidity beyond the strength of SbF₅ , which was investigated experimentally and computationally. The resulting highly Lewis acidic boron compounds were used for catalytic C-F and S-F bond activation.

Imine-stabilized silylium ions: synthesis, structure and application in catalysis

Novel norbornene-based imine-stabilized silylium ions 2 have been synthesized via the simple reaction of sulfide-stabilized silylium ion 1 with carbonyl derivatives. Those silylium ions were fully characterized in solution and in the solid state by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis as well as DFT calculations. Unlike the previously reported phosphine-stabilized silylium ion VI, behaving as a Lewis pair, calculations show that 2 have a strong Lewis acid character. Indeed, imine-stabilized silylium ions 2 are able to activate Si-H bonds and catalyzed the hydrosilylation of carbonyl derivatives under mild conditions.

Rational Design to Activate Tetrafluoromethane by Two-Coordinate Borinium

The activation of tetrafluoromethane (CF₄) is quite challenging. The current methods have a high decomposition rate but are expensive, and therefore, their widespread use is limited. Here, inspired by the successful C-F activation within saturated fluorocarbons, we have designed a rational approach based on two-coordinate borinium for activating CF₄ using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our calculations predict that this approach is both thermodynamically and kinetically favorable.

Phosphinophosphoranes: Mixed-Valent Phosphorus Compounds with Ambiphilic Properties

Herein, we present a simple synthesis of mixed-valent phosphinophosphoranes bearing three- and five-coordinate phosphorus centers. Compounds with phosphorus-phosphorus bonds were synthesized via a reaction of lithium phosphides RR'PLi with cat₂PCl (cat = catecholate), whereas derivatives with methylene-linked phosphorus centers were obtained via a reaction of phosphanylmethanides RR'CH₂Li with cat₂PCl. The presence of accessible lone-pair electrons on the P-phosphanyl atom of phosphinophosphoranes during the reaction of the title compounds with H₃B·SMe₂, where phosphinophosphorane-borane adducts were formed quantitatively, was confirmed. Furthermore, the Lewis basic and Lewis acidic properties of the phosphinophosphoranes in reactions with phenyl isothiocyanate were tested. Depending on the structure of the starting phosphinophosphorane, phosphinophosphorylation of PhNCS or formation of a five-membered zwitterionic adduct was observed. The structures of the isolated compounds were unambiguously determined by heteronuclear nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Moreover, by applying density functional theory calculations, we compared the Lewis basicity and nucleophilicity of diversified trivalent P-centers.

Theoretical Insight into the Multiple Roles of LiHMDS in Pd-Catalyzed Borylation of Fluorobenzene

Pd-catalyzed borylation of fluorobenzene was theoretically studied. DFT calculations revealed that the reaction occurs through an unprecedented 3 + 6-membered ring transition state, in which one LiHMDS (HMDS = hexamethyldisilazane) acts as a ligand and another LiHMDS is essential to provide Li···N and Li···F interactions, overcoming the large destabilization of the strong phenyl-F bond distortion. The characteristic feature of LiHMDS was elucidated by comparing it with HMDS and NaHMDS analogues.

Norbornene based-sulfide-stabilized silylium ions: synthesis, structure and application in catalysis

A norbornene-based sulfide stabilized silylium ion 4 has been synthesized. The S-Si interaction was studied in solution and in the solid state by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis as well as DFT calculations. Unlike the previously reported phosphine-stabilized silylium ion VII, behaving as a Lewis pair, calculations predict that 4 should behave as a Lewis acid toward acrylate derivatives. Indeed, the base-stabilized silylium ion 4 has emerged as an easy-to-handle silylium ion-based Lewis acid catalyst, particularly for the Diels-Alder cycloaddition, with poorly reactive dienes, and hydrodefluorination reactions.

Recent Advances in C-F Bond Cleavage Enabled by Visible Light Photoredox Catalysis

The creation of new bonds via C-F bond cleavage of readily available per- or oligofluorinated compounds has received growing interest. Using such a strategy, a myriad of valuable partially fluorinated products can be prepared, which otherwise are difficult to make by the conventional C-F bond formation methods. Visible light photoredox catalysis has been proven as an important and powerful tool for defluorinative reactions due to its mild, easy to handle, and environmentally benign characteristics. Compared to the classical C-F activation that proceeds via two-electron processes, radicals are the key intermediates using visible light photoredox catalysis, providing new modes for the cleavage of C-F bonds. In this review, a summary of the visible light-promoted C-F bond cleavage since 2018 was presented. The contents were classified by the fluorosubstrates, including polyfluorinated arenes, gem-difluoroalkenes, trifluoromethyl arenes, and trifluoromethyl alkenes. An emphasis is placed on the discussion of the mechanisms and limitations of these reactions. Finally, my personal perspective on the future development of this rapidly emerging field was provided.

Main Group Catalysis: Cationic Si(II) and Ge(II) Compounds as Catalysts in Organosilicon Chemistry

Cyclopentadienyl (Cp)-coordinated cationic Si(II) (1) and Ge(II) compounds (2) are a new class of catalysts for various transformations in organosilicon chemistry. This review demonstrates that these compounds effectively catalyze technically important reactions, such as the hydrosilylation of carbon-carbon multiple bonds and various types of siloxane-coupling reactions, e.g., the Piers-Rubinsztajn reaction and the oxidative siloxane coupling reaction. Whereas the cationic Si(II) compounds are sensitive to air and moisture, the corresponding cationic Ge(II) compounds are bench stable, thus offering further advantages. The new catalysts contribute to the growing need for the substitution of transition metals and heavier main group metals by their lighter congeners, especially in industrially relevant organosilicon chemistry.

Lewis Superacidic Catecholato Phosphonium Ions: Phosphorus-Ligand Cooperative C-H Bond Activation

A series of catecholato phosphonium ions, including the first stable bis(catecholato)-substituted derivatives, are isolated and fully characterized. The cations rank among the most potent literature-known Lewis acids on the Gutmann-Beckett and ion affinity scales. In contrast to halogenated or multiply charged phosphorus cations, Lewis superacidity is imparted by structural constraints, as disclosed by energy decomposition analysis. The modular access provides a tunable scaffold while maintaining extreme affinity, demonstrated by the synthesis of a chiral Lewis superacid. The combination of electrophilic phosphorus and basic oxygen substituents leverages new reactivity modes by phosphorus-ligand cooperativity. With this, a phosphorus-mediated C-H bond activation is accomplished.

Selective C-F Bond Allylation of Trifluoromethylalkenes

Selective C-F bond functionalization of CF₃ group represents an appealing strategy for the incorporation of pharmaceutically privileged difluoromethylene moiety. Despite the recent significant advancement attained in the functionalization of Ar-CF₃ molecules, prescriptions amenable for alkenyl-CF₃ congeners remain sufficiently inadequate. Herein, we report a strategically novel protocol for the C-F bond elaboration of trifluoromethylalkene derivatives. By using readily available allyl metallics as nucleophilic coupling partner, the present reaction enables an expedient construction of structurally diversified CF₂ -bridged 1,5-dienes. Furthermore, the exquisite selectivity observed in this transformation is revealed to be based on the underlying mechanism that consists of a cascade of nucleophilic S_N 2' defluorinative allylation and electronically promoted Cope rearrangement.

Silylium Ions: From Elusive Reactive Intermediates to Potent Catalysts

The history of silyl cations has all the makings of a drama but with a happy ending. Being considered reactive intermediates impossible to isolate in the condensed phase for decades, their actual characterization in solution and later in solid state did only fuel the discussion about their existence and initially created a lot of controversy. This perception has completely changed today, and silyl cations and their donor-stabilized congeners are now widely accepted compounds with promising use in synthetic chemistry. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the fundamental facts and principles of the chemistry of silyl cations, including reliable ways of their preparation as well as their physical and chemical properties. The striking features of silyl cations are their enormous electrophilicity and as such reactivity as super Lewis acids as well as fluorophilicity. Known applications rely on silyl cations as reactants, stoichiometric reagents, and promoters where the reaction success is based on their steady regeneration over the course of the reaction. Silyl cations can even be discrete catalysts, thereby opening the next chapter of their way into the toolbox of synthetic methodology.

Cleavage of the Inert C(sp2)-Ar σ-Bond of Alkenes by a Spatial Constrained Interaction with Phosphinidene

[1 + 2] cycloaddition is a classical reaction between the electrophilic phosphinidene and an alkene. However, a spatial constraint blocks this well-known reaction and enables an unprecedented chemoselective C(sp²)-Ar σ-bond insertion of the alkene. The theoretical calculations demonstrate that this C-C bond cleavage is energetically feasible and thermodynamically favored through an electrophilic rearrangement and concomitant 1,9-aryl migration without involving any strained intermediate.

An intermolecular FLP System derived from an NHC-coordinated trisilacyclopropylidene

The NHC-coordinated trisilacyclopropylidene (A) is shown to behave as the basic component of an FLP used in combination with the Lewis acid B(C6F4H)3 (i.e. B(2,3,5,6-C6F4H)3). This FLP cleaves dihydrogen highly selectively at room temperature giving rise to the ionic compound [(NHC)SiH(Mes2SiSiMes2)][HB(C6F4H)3] 1 in 90% isolated yield. Further reaction of the FLP with Ph2NH and acetone yielded compounds [(NHC)SiH(Mes2SiSiMes2)][Ph2NB(C6F4H)3] 2 and [(NHC)SiH(Mes2SiSiMes2)][MeC(CH2)OB(C6F4H)3] 3 in 75% and 80% yield, respectively. Reaction of the FLP with N2O results in the oxidation of the silylene center affording [((NHC)SiOB(C6F4H)3)(Mes2SiSiMes2)] 4 in 53% yield. These products are spectroscopically characterized and an X-ray structure of 4 is reported.

Activation of C–F, Si–F, and S–F Bonds by N-Heterocyclic Carbenes and Their Isoelectronic Analogues

Reactions involving C–F, Si–F, and S–F bond cleavage with N-heterocyclic carbenes and isoelectronic species are reviewed. Most examples involve activation of aromatic C–F bond via an SNAr pathway and nucleophilic substitution of fluorine in electron-deficient olefins. The mechanism of the C–F bond activation depends on the reaction partners and the reaction can proceed via addition–elimination, oxidative addition (concerted or stepwise) or metathesis. The adducts formed upon substitution find applications in organic synthesis, as ligands and as stable radical precursors, but in most cases, their full potential remains unexplored.

An arene-stabilized η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl antimony dication acts as a source of Sb+ or Sb3+ cations

The dicationic compound [(η⁵-Cp*)Sb(tol)][B(C₆F₅)₄]₂ (1) (tol = toluene), which exhibits strong Lewis acidity, reacts with Lewis bases to provide Sb⁺ or Sb³⁺ cations.

Base-Stabilized [PO]+ /[PO2 ]+ Cations

The salts [(BAC)₂ PO][BF₄ ] (5) and [(BAC)₂ PO₂ ][BF₄ ] (4) (BAC=bis(diisopropylamino) cyclopropenylidene), consisting of the PO⁺ and PO₂ ⁺ cations, respectively, coordinated to the singlet carbenes, have been prepared. Computational investigations reveal that the electronic structure of the PO⁺ cation is a hybrid between the charge-localized and charge-delocalized resonance forms, resulting in ambiphilic reactivity. Compound 5 reacts as a donor with the transition-metal complex K₂ PtCl₄ to furnish [[(BAC)₂ PO]₂ PtCl₂ ][BF₄ ]₂ (6) and KCl. Remarkably, both 5 and 4 have shown to act as electrophiles undergoing reactions with fluoride anion, leading to [OPF₂ ]^- and (BAC)PO₂ F, respectively.

Mechanistic Features in Al(I)-Mediated Oxidative Addition of Aryl C-F Bonds: Insights From Density Functional Theory Calculations

The oxidative addition of a range of robust aryl C–F bonds to a single Al(I) center supported by a (NacNac)⁻ bidentate ligand ((NacNac)⁻ = [ArNC(Me)CHC(Me)NAr]⁻ and Ar = 2,6–Pr2iC₆H₃) have been explored by density functional theory calculations. Our calculations demonstrate that the Al(I) center-mediated C–F insertion generally proceeds via the concerted mechanism that involve both the donation (nAl→σC-F*) and back-donation (σF(p)→πAl(p)*) interactions. In addition, the predicted free energy barriers for the C–F bond activation show good agreement with the experimental information available. Finally, the comparative studies show that B(I) is the most active among group III metals (B, Al, Ga), thus supplying a testable prediction for experiments.

P(v) dications: carbon-based Lewis acid initiators for hydrodefluorination

The P(iii) dication [(terpy)PPh]²⁺ is oxidized by reaction with o-chloranil or 9,10-phenanthrenequinone to give the P(v) dications [(terpy)(C₆Cl₄O₂)PPh]²⁺ and [(terpy)(C₁₄H₈O₂)PPh]²⁺, respectively. These species are coordinatively saturated at phosphorus and yet display the ability to effect Lewis acid initiation of hydrodefluorination of fluoroalkanes. Experimental and computational data support the notion that the P(v) dications are Lewis acidic at the para-carbon of the central ring of the terpy ligand.
