Alkyliodines in High Oxidation State: Enhanced Synthetic Possibilities and Accelerated Catalyst Turn-Over

Hypoiodite-Catalyzed Oxidative Umpolung of Indoles for Enantioselective Dearomatization

Here we report the oxidative umpolung of 2,3-disubstituted indoles toward enantioselective dearomative aza-spirocyclization to give the corresponding spiroindolenines using chiral quaternary ammonium hypoiodite catalysis. Mechanistic studies revealed the umpolung reactivity of C3 of indoles by iodination of the indole nitrogen atom. Moreover, the introduction of pyrazole as an electron-withdrawing auxiliary group at C2 suppressed a competitive dissociative racemic pathway, and enantioselective spirocyclization proceeded to give not only spiropyrrolidines but also four-membered spiroazetidines that are otherwise difficult to access.

I(III)-Catalyzed Oxidative Cyclization-Migration Tandem Reactions of Unactivated Anilines

An I(III)-catalyzed oxidative cyclization-migration tandem reaction using Selectfluor as the oxidant was developed that converts unactivated anilines into 3H-indoles is reported herein. The reaction requires as little as 1 mol % of the iodocatalyst and is mild, tolerating pyridine and thiophene functional groups, and the dependence of the diastereoselectivity of the process on the identity of the iodoarene or iodoalkane precatalyst suggests that the catalyst is present for the stereochemical determining C-N bond forming step.

Access to Vinyl Ethers and Ketones with Hypervalent Iodine Reagents as Oxy-Allyl Cation Synthetic Equivalents

We report an Umpolung strategy of enol ethers to generate oxy-allyl cation equivalents based on the use of hypervalent iodine reagents. Under mild basic conditions, the addition of nucleophiles to aryloxy-substituted vinylbenziodoxolone (VBX) reagents, easily available in two steps from silyl alkynes, resulted in the stereoselective formation of substituted aryl enol ethers. The reaction was most efficient with phenols as nucleophiles, but preliminary results were also achieved for C- and N- nucleophiles. In absence of external nucleophiles, the 2-iodobenzoate group of the reagent was transferred. The obtained aryl enol ethers could then be transformed into α-difunctionalized ketones by oxidation. The described "allyl cation"-like reactivity contrast with the well-established "vinyl-cation" behavior of alkenyl iodonium salts.

Iodine Catalysis for C(sp3 )-H Fluorination with a Nucleophilic Fluorine Source

Iodine catalysis was developed for aliphatic fluorination through light-promoted homolytic C-H bond cleavage. The intermediary formation of amidyl radicals enables selective C-H functionalization via carbon-centered radicals. For the subsequent C-F bond formation, previous methods have typically been limited by a requirement for electrophilic fluorine reagents. We here demonstrate that the intermediary instalment of a carbon-iodine bond sets the stage for an umpolung, thereby establishing an unprecedented nucleophilic fluorination pathway.

Catalytic Cleavage of C(sp2)-C(sp2) Bonds with Rh-Carbynoids

We report a catalytic strategy that generates rhodium-carbynoids by selective diazo activation of designed carbyne sources. We found that rhodium-carbynoid species provoke C(sp²)-C(sp²) bond scission in alkenes by inserting a monovalent carbon unit between both sp²-hybridized carbons. This skeletal remodeling process accesses synthetically useful allyl cation intermediates that conduct to valuable allylic building blocks upon nucleophile attack. Our results rely on the formation of cyclopropyl-I^(III) intermediates able to undergo electrocyclic ring-opening, following the Woodward-Hoffmann-DePuy rules.
