Metal-Free Fast Azidation by Using Tetrabutylammonium Azide: Effective Synthesis of Alkyl Azides and Well-Defined Azido-End Polymethacrylates

Azide Ionic Liquids for Safe, Green, and Highly-Efficient Azidation Reactions to Produce Azide Polymers

Azide compounds are widely used and especially, polymers bearing pendant azide groups are highly desired in numerous fields. However, harsh reaction conditions are always mandatory to achieve full azidation, causing severe side reactions and degradation of the polymers. Herein, we report the design and preparation of two azide ionic liquids (AILs) with azide anion and triethylene glycol (E3 )-containing cation, [P444E3 ][N3 ] and [MIME3 ][N3 ]. Compared with the traditional sodium azide (NaN3 ) approach, both AILs showed much higher reaction rates and functional-group tolerance. More importantly, they could act as both reagents and solvents for the quantitative azidation of various polymeric precursors under mild conditions. Theoretical simulations suggested that the outstanding performance of AILs originated from the existence of ion pairs during the reaction, and the E3 moieties played a crucial role. Lastly, after the reaction, the AILs could be easily regenerated, presenting a safer, greener, and highly efficient synthesis route for azide polymers.

Fluorine-Assisted Rearrangement of Geminal Azidofluorides to Imidoyl Fluorides

Organoazide rearrangement constitutes versatile synthetic strategies but typically requires an extremely strong acid and/or a high reaction temperature. Our group recently discovered the remarkable accelerating effect of the geminal fluorine substituent that enables the facile rearrangement of azides into imidoyl fluorides without the aid of acid under much milder reaction conditions. The role of geminal fluorine was elucidated by both experimental and computational investigations. This new reactivity led to the development of a practical one-step tandem preparative method for potentially useful and bench-stable imidoyl fluorides from a wide range of structurally diverse geminal chlorofluorides. Our additional efforts to expand the reaction scope regarding the migrating group, halogen, and carbonyl function are described, and the synthetic utility of the imidoyl fluoride products was demonstrated in hopes of promoting the use of this under-appreciated functional group in the synthetic organic community.

Synthesis of vinyl iodide chain-end polymers via organocatalyzed chain-end transformation

In the presence of alkynes (CH[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-R2), iodide chain-end polymers (Polymer-I) were successfully transformed to vinyl iodide chain-end polymers (polymer-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CR2-I) in a single step via organocatalysis. This reaction is completely metal-free and easy to carry out without using special reagents or special conditions. The polymers encompassing polyacrylates and polymethacrylate, and additional functionalities (e.g., OH and CF3) were also incorporated into the R2 moiety. The obtained Polymer-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CR2-I further served as a useful precursor for copper-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with various thiols (R3-SH) to yield vinyl sulfide chain-end polymers (polymer-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CR2-SR3) with various R3 moieties. Interestingly, under selected conditions, this organocatalysis also offered block-like copolymers containing a conjugated oligo-alkyne segment and a non-conjugated polyacrylate segment. Exploiting the unique structure, the block-like copolymer was used as an efficient dispersant of carbon nanotubes.

Recent development in halogen-bonding-catalyzed living radical polymerization

The development and applications of an organocatalyzed living radical polymerization via halogen-bonding catalysis, i.e., reversible complexation mediated polymerization (RCMP), are highlighted.
