Early Relaxation Dynamics in the Photoswitchable Complex trans-[RuCl(NO)(py)4 ]2

Electronic structure of light-induced nitrosyl linkage isomers revealed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy at Ru L3,2-edges

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful tool for examining changes of the electronic and molecular structure following light-induced excitation of a molecule. Specifically, this method can be applied to investigate the ground (GS, RuNO) and metastable states (MS1, RuON and MS2, Ruη2(NO)) of the nitrosyl ligand (NO), which differ in their coordination mode to the metal. In this work, we report for the first time experimental and theoretical (DFT) Ru L3,2-edge XA spectra for the octahedral complex trans-[RuNOPy4F](ClO4)2 (1, Py = pyridine) in both ground and metastable states. The transition from GS to MS1 using 420 nm light excitation leads to a significant downshift of the 2p → LUMO(+1) peaks by about 0.5-0.8 eV, attributed to the destabilisation of 2p orbitals and stabilization of LUMO(+1). Subsequent irradiation of MS1 at 920 nm produces isomer MS2, for which even greater stabilization of LUMO occurs, though without a significant change in 2p energy. The change in 2p energy is attributed to a variation in the charge on the Ru atom after NO isomerization, while LUMO(+1) stabilization is related to changes in the Ru(NO) bond length and the composition of this orbital.

Local force constants and charges of the nitrosyl ligand in photoinduced NO linkage isomers in a prototypical ruthenium nitrosyl complex

Photoinduced linkage isomers (PLI) of the NO ligand in transition-metal nitrosyl compounds can be identified by vibrational spectroscopy due to the large shifts of the (NO) stretching vibration. We present a detailed experimental and theoretical study of the prototypical compound K2[RuCl5NO], where (NO) shifts by ≈150 cm-1 when going from the N-bound (κN) ground state (GS) to the oxygen-bound (κO) metastable linkage isomer MS1, and by ≈360 cm-1 when going to the side-on (κ2N,O) metastable linkage isomer MS2. We show that the experimentally observed N-O stretching modes of the GS, MS1, and MS2 exhibit strong coupling with the Ru-N and Ru-O stretching modes, which can be decoupled using the local mode vibrational theory formalism. From the resulting decoupled pure two-atomic harmonic oscillators the local force constants are determined, which all follow the same quadratic behavior on the wavenumber. A Bader charge analysis shows that the total charge on the NO ligand is not correlated to the observed frequency shift of (NO).

Tuning ultrafast time-evolution of photo-induced charge-transfer states: A real-time electronic dynamics study in substituted indenotetracene derivatives

Photo-induced charge transfer (CT) states are pivotal in many technological and biological processes. A deeper knowledge of such states is mandatory for modeling the charge migration dynamics. Real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TD-DFT) electronic dynamics simulations are employed to explicitly observe the electronic density time-evolution upon photo-excitation. Asymmetrically substituted indenotetracene molecules, given their potential application as n-type semiconductors in organic photovoltaic materials, are here investigated. Effects of substituents with different electron-donating characters are analyzed in terms of the overall electronic energy spacing and resulting ultrafast CT dynamics through linear response (LR-)TD-DFT and RT-TD-DFT based approaches. The combination of the computational techniques here employed provided direct access to the electronic density reorganization in time and to its spatial and rational representation in terms of molecular orbital occupation time evolution. Such results can be exploited to design peculiar directional charge dynamics, crucial when photoactive materials are used for light-harvesting applications.

Which Electronic Structure Method to Choose in Trajectory Surface Hopping Dynamics Simulations? Azomethane as a Case Study

Nonadiabatic dynamics simulations have become a standard approach to explore photochemical reactions. Such simulations require underlying potential energy surfaces and couplings between them, calculated at a chosen level of theory, yet this aspect is rarely assessed. Here, in combination with the popular trajectory surface hopping dynamics method, we use a high-accuracy XMS-CASPT2 electronic structure level as a benchmark for assessing the performances of various post-Hartree-Fock methods (namely, CIS, ADC(2), CC2, and CASSCF) and exchange-correlation functionals (PBE, PBE0, and CAM-B3LYP) in a TD-DFT/TDA context, using the isomerization around a double bond as test case. Different relaxation pathways are identified, and the ability of the different methods to reproduce their relative importance and time scale is discussed. The results show that multireference electronic structure methods should be preferred, when studying nonadiabatic decay between excited and ground states. If not affordable, TD-DFT with TDA and hybrid functionals and ADC(2) are efficient alternatives but overestimate the nonradiative decay yield and thus may miss deexcitation pathways.

Bismuth and antimony halometalates containing photoswitchable ruthenium nitrosyl complexes

The first examples of Bi(III) and Sb(III) halide compounds combined with a photoswitchable ruthenium nitrosyl unit are reported. The structures of [RuNOPy₄Br]₄[Sb₂Br₈][Sb₃Br₁₂]₂ (1) and (H₃O)[RuNOPy₄Br]₄[Bi₂Br₉]₃·3H₂O (2) were determined by X-ray diffraction, and exhibit three different structural types of group 15 halometalates. Low-temperature IR-spectroscopy measurements reveal that the irradiation of 1 at 365 nm switches a stable Ru-NO (GS) unit to a metastable Ru-ON (MS1) linkage. Moreover, the light excitation of 2 at 365 or 405 nm induces the additional formation of a side-bond isomer Ru-η²-(NO) (MS2). The reverse reactions MS1/MS2 → GS can be induced by red-infrared light irradiation or by heating at temperatures >200 K. The obtained synthetic and spectroscopic data open the way for the preparation of hybrid halide complexes with a variety of photoswitchable complexes (NO₂, SO₂, N₂, etc.), and give an insight into the behavior of light-induced species embedded in polynuclear halides.

Understanding Charge Dynamics in Dense Electronic Manifolds in Complex Environments

Photoinduced charge transfer (CT) excited states and their relaxation mechanisms can be highly interdependent on the environment effects and the consequent changes in the electronic density. Providing a molecular interpretation of the ultrafast (subpicosecond) interplay between initial photoexcited states in such dense electronic manifolds in condensed phase is crucial for improving and understanding such phenomena. Real-time time-dependent density functional theory is here the method of choice to observe the charge density, explicitly propagated in an ultrafast time domain, along with all time-dependent properties that can be easily extracted from it. A designed protocol of analysis for real-time electronic dynamics to be applied to time evolving electronic density related properties to characterize both in time and in space CT dynamics in complex systems is here introduced and validated, proposing easy to be read cross-correlation maps. As case studies to test such tools, we present the photoinduced charge-transfer electronic dynamics of 5-benzyluracil, a mimic of nucleic acid/protein interactions, and the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer electronic dynamics in water solution of [Ru(dcbpy)2(NCS)2]4-, dcbpy = (4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine), or "N34-", a dye sensitizer for solar cells. Electrostatic and explicit ab initio treatment of solvent molecules have been compared in the latter case, revealing the importance of the accurate modeling of mutual solute-solvent polarization on CT kinetics. We observed that explicit quantum mechanical treatment of solvent slowed down the charge carriers mobilities with respect to the gas-phase. When all water molecules were modeled instead as simpler embedded point charges, the electronic dynamics appeared enhanced, with a reduced hole-electron distance and higher mean velocities due to the close fixed charges and an artificially increased polarization effect. Such analysis tools and the presented case studies can help to unveil the influence of the electronic manifold, as well as of the finite temperature-induced structural distortions and the environment on the ultrafast charge motions.

Ultraviolet photodissociation of Mg+-NO complex: Ion imaging of a reaction branching in the excited states

Ultraviolet photodissociation processes of gas phase Mg⁺-NO complex were studied by photofragment ion imaging experiments and theoretical calculations for excited electronic states. At 355 nm excitation, both Mg⁺ and NO⁺ photofragment ions were observed with positive anisotropy parameters, and theoretical calculations revealed that the two dissociation channels originate from an electronic transition from a bonding orbital consisting of Mg⁺ 3s and NO π* orbitals to an antibonding counterpart. For the NO⁺ channel, the photofragment image exhibited a high anisotropy (β = 1.53 ± 0.07), and a relatively large fraction (∼40%) of the available energy was partitioned into translational energy. These observations are rationalized by proposing a rapid dissociation process on a repulsive potential energy surface correlated to the Mg(¹S) + NO⁺(¹Σ) dissociation limit. In contrast, for the Mg⁺ channel, the angular distribution was more isotropic (β = 0.48 ± 0.03) and only ∼25% of the available energy was released into translational energy. The differences in the recoil distribution for these competing channels imply a reaction branching on the excited state surface. On the theoretical potential surface of the excited state, we found a deep well facilitating an isomerization from bent geometry in the Franck-Condon region to linear and/or T-shaped isomer. As a result, the Mg⁺ fragment was formed via the structural change followed by further relaxation to lower electronic states correlated to the Mg⁺(²S) + NO(²Π) exit channel.

Exact Factorization Adventures: A Promising Approach for Non-Bound States

Modeling the dynamics of non-bound states in molecules requires an accurate description of how electronic motion affects nuclear motion and vice-versa. The exact factorization (XF) approach offers a unique perspective, in that it provides potentials that act on the nuclear subsystem or electronic subsystem, which contain the effects of the coupling to the other subsystem in an exact way. We briefly review the various applications of the XF idea in different realms, and how features of these potentials aid in the interpretation of two different laser-driven dissociation mechanisms. We present a detailed study of the different ways the coupling terms in recently-developed XF-based mixed quantum-classical approximations are evaluated, where either truly coupled trajectories, or auxiliary trajectories that mimic the coupling are used, and discuss their effect in both a surface-hopping framework as well as the rigorously-derived coupled-trajectory mixed quantum-classical approach.

Solid-State Photo-NMR Study on Light-Induced Nitrosyl Linkage Isomers Uncovers Their Structural, Electronic, and Diamagnetic Nature

A light-induced linkage NO isomer (MS1) in trans-[Ru(¹⁵NO)(py)₄¹⁹F](ClO₄)₂ is detected and measured for the first time by solid-state MAS NMR. Chemical shift tensors of ¹⁵N and ¹⁹F, along with ⁿJ(¹⁵N-¹⁹F) spin-spin couplings and T₁ relaxation times of MS1, are compared with the ground state (GS) at temperatures T < 250 K. Isotropic chemical shifts (¹⁵N and ¹⁹F) are well resolved for two crystallographically independent cations (A and B) [Ru(¹⁵NO)(py)₄¹⁹F]²⁺, allowing to define separately both populations of MS1 isomers and thermal decay rates for two structural sites. The relaxation times T₁ of ¹⁹F in the case of GS (30/38.6 s for sites A/B) and MS1 (11.6/11.8 s for sites A/B) indicate that both isomers are diamagnetic, which is the first experimental evidence of diamagnetic properties of MS1 in ruthenium nitrosyl. After light irradiation (λ = 420 nm), the NO ligand rotates by nearly 180° from F-Ru-N-O to F-Ru-O-N, whereby the isotropic chemical shifts of δ_iso(¹⁵N) increase and those of δ_iso(¹⁹F) decrease. The ⁿJ(¹⁵N-¹⁹F) couplings increase from ²J(¹⁵N-Ru-¹⁹F)_GS = 71 Hz to ³J(¹⁵N-O-Ru-¹⁹F)_MS1 = 105 Hz. These results are interpreted on the basis of DFT-CASTEP calculations including Bader-, Mulliken-, and Hirshfeld-charge density distributions of both states.

Photoinduced linkage isomers in a model ruthenium nitrosyl complex: Identification and assignment of vibrational modes

Photoinduced NO-linkage isomers were investigated in the solid state of labelled trans-[Ru(^14/15NO)(py₄)F](ClO₄)₂ complex by combined IR-spectroscopy and DFT calculations. Based on the experimental data and the DFT calculations of this isotopically labelled ^14/15NO nitrosyl compound, we present a complete assignment of the vibrational bands of three nitrosyl linkage isomers in a range from 4000 to 200 cm^-1. The calculated IR-spectra match well with the experimental data allowing reliable assignment of the vibrational bands. The structural change from the Ru-NO (GS) to the Ru-ON (MS1) and Ru-η²-(NO) (MS2) linkage configuration leads to the downshift of the ν(NO) and ν(Ru-(NO)) bands, and a corresponding increase of the energy of the ν(Ru-F) band. The shift of the bands corresponds to the change of the Ru-(NO) and Ru-F bond lengths: increase of the Ru-(NO) bond length leads to the decrease of the energy of the ν(Ru-(NO)) band; decrease of the Ru-F bond length leads to the increase of the energy of the ν(Ru-F) band. These observations can be extrapolated to the family of related nitrosyl complexes and therefore be used for the qualitative prediction of the Ru-(NO) and Ru-L_trans-to-NO bond lengths of different linkage isomers in the framework of one complex. While the formation of linkage isomers is a reversible process, long-time irradiation sometimes induces irreversible reactions such as the release of NO. Here, we show that the photolysis of trans-[Ru(^14/15NO)(py₄)F](ClO₄)₂ in KBr pellets may lead to the release of nitrous oxide N₂O, conceivably through the formation of a {Ru-(κ²-ONNO)} intermediate.

A Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study of the Low-Lying Excited States of a Molybdenum Carbonyl-Nitrosyl Complex

A density matrix renormalization group-self consistent field (DMRG-SCF) study has been carried out to calculate the low-lying excited states of CpMo(CO)2 NO, a molybdenum complex containing NO and CO ligands. In order to automatically select an appropriate active space, a novel procedure employing the maximum single-orbital entropy for several states has been introduced and shown to be efficient and easy-to-implement when several electronic states are simultaneously considered. The analysis of the resulting natural transition orbitals and charge-transfer numbers shows that the lowest five excited electronic states are excitation into metal-NO antibonding orbitals, which offer the possibility for nitric oxide (NO) photorelease after excitation with visible light. Higher excited states are metal-centered excitations with contributions of metal-CO antibonding orbitals, which may serve as a gateway for carbon monoxide (CO) delivery. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations done for comparison, show that the state characters agree remarkably well with those from DMRG-SCF, while excitation energies are 0.4-1.0 eV red-shifted with respect to the DMRG-SCF ones.

Ultrafast photochemistry of a molybdenum carbonyl-nitrosyl complex with a triazacyclononane coligand

Transition metal complexes capable of releasing small molecules such as carbon monoxide and nitric oxide upon photoactivation are versatile tools in various fields of chemistry and biology. In this work, we report on the ultrafast photochemistry of [Mo(CO)₂(NO)(iPr₃tacn)]PF₆ (iPr₃tacn = 1,4,7-triisopropyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane), which was characterized under continuous illumination and with femtosecond UV-pump/UV-probe and UV-pump/MIR-probe spectroscopy, as well as with stationary calculations. The experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that while the photodissociation of one of the two CO ligands upon UV excitation can be inferred both on an ultrafast timescale as well as under exposure times of several minutes, no evidence of NO release is observed under the same conditions. The binding mode of the diatomic ligands is impacted by the electronic excitation, and transient intermediates are observed on a timescale of tens of picoseconds before CO is released from the coordination sphere. Furthermore, based on calculated potential energy scans, we suggest that photolysis of NO could be possible after a subsequent excitation of an electronically excited state with a second laser pulse, or by accessing low-lying excited states that otherwise cannot be directly excited by light.

The Quest to Simulate Excited-State Dynamics of Transition Metal Complexes

This Perspective describes current computational efforts in the field of simulating photodynamics of transition metal complexes. We present the typical workflows and feature the strengths and limitations of the different contemporary approaches. From electronic structure methods suitable to describe transition metal complexes to approaches able to simulate their nuclear dynamics under the effect of light, we give particular attention to build a bridge between theory and experiment by critically discussing the different models commonly adopted in the interpretation of spectroscopic experiments and the simulation of particular observables. Thereby, we review all the studies of excited-state dynamics on transition metal complexes, both in gas phase and in solution from reduced to full dimensionality.

Ultrafast and long-time excited state kinetics of an NIR-emissive vanadium(iii) complex II. Elucidating triplet-to-singlet excited-state dynamics

We report the non-adiabatic dynamics of VIIICl3(ddpd), a complex based on the Earth-abundant first-row transition metal vanadium with a d2 electronic configuration which is able to emit phosphorescence in solution in the near-infrared spectral region. Trajectory surface-hopping dynamics based on linear vibronic coupling potentials obtained with CASSCF provide molecular-level insights into the intersystem crossing from triplet to singlet metal-centered states. While the majority of the singlet population undergoes back-intersystem crossing to the triplet manifold, 1-2% remains stable during the 10 ps simulation time, enabling the phosphorescence described in Dorn et al. Chem. Sci., 2021, DOI: 10.1039/D1SC02137K. Competing with intersystem crossing, two different relaxation channels via internal conversion through the triplet manifold occur. The nuclear motion that drives the dynamics through the different electronic states corresponds mainly to the increase of all metal-ligand bond distances as well as the decrease of the angles of trans-coordinated ligand atoms. Both motions lead to a decrease in the ligand-field splitting, which stabilizes the interconfigurational excited states populated during the dynamics. Analysis of the electronic character of the states reveals that increasing and stabilizing the singlet population, which in turn can result in enhanced phosphorescence, could be accomplished by further increasing the ligand-field strength.

The Role of Triplet States in the Photodissociation of a Platinum Azide Complex by a Density Matrix Renormalization Group Method

Platinum azide complexes are appealing anticancer photochemotherapy drug candidates because they release cytotoxic azide radicals upon light irradiation. Here we present a density matrix renormalization group self-consistent field (DMRG-SCF) study of the azide photodissociation mechanism of trans,trans,trans-[Pt(N₃)₂(OH)₂(NH₃)₂], including spin-orbit coupling. We find a complex interplay of singlet and triplet electronic excited states that falls into three different dissociation channels at well-separated energies. These channels can be accessed either via direct excitation into barrierless dissociative states or via intermediate doorway states from which the system undergoes non-radiative internal conversion and intersystem crossing. The high density of states, particularly of spin-mixed states, is key to aid non-radiative population transfer and enhance photodissociation along the lowest electronic excited states.

Ultrafast processes: coordination chemistry and quantum theory

Coordination compounds, characterized by fascinating and tunable electronic properties, are capable of binding easily to proteins, polymers, wires and DNA. Upon irradiation, these molecular systems develop functions finding applications in solar cells, photocatalysis, luminescent and conformational probes, electron transfer triggers and diagnostic or therapeutic tools. The control of these functions is activated by the light wavelength, the metal/ligand cooperation and the environment within the first picoseconds (ps). After a brief summary of the theoretical background, this perspective reviews case studies, from 1st row to 3rd row transition metal complexes, that illustrate how spin-orbit, vibronic coupling and quantum effects drive the photophysics of this class of molecules at the early stage of the photoinduced elementary processes within the fs-ps time scale range.

Internal Conversion and Intersystem Crossing with the Exact Factorization

We present a detailed derivation of the generalized coupled-trajectory mixed quantum-classical (G-CT-MQC) algorithm based on the exact-factorization equations. The ultimate goal is to propose an algorithm that can be employed for molecular dynamics simulations of nonradiative phenomena, as the spin-allowed internal conversions and the spin-forbidden intersystem crossings. Internal conversions are nonadiabatic processes driven by the kinetic coupling between electronic states, whereas intersystem crossings are mediated by the spin-orbit coupling. In this paper, we discuss computational issues related to the suitable representation for electronic dynamics and the different natures of kinetic and spin-orbit coupling. Numerical studies on model systems allow us to test the performance of the G-CT-MQC algorithm in different situations.

CASPT2 Potential Energy Curves for NO Dissociation in a Ruthenium Nitrosyl Complex

Ruthenium nitrosyl complexes are fascinating photoactive compounds showing complex photoreactivity, such as N→O linkage photoisomerism and NO photorelease. This dual photochemical behavior has been the subject of many experimental studies in order to optimize these systems for applications as photoswitches or therapeutic agents for NO delivery. However, despite recent experimental and computational studies along this line, the underlying photochemical mechanisms still need to be elucidated for a more efficient design of these systems. Here, we present a theoretical contribution based on the calculations of excited-state potential energy profiles for NO dissociation in the prototype trans-[RuCl(NO)(py)4]2+ complex at the complete active space second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2). The results point to a sequential two-step photon absorption photorelease mechanism coupled to partial photoisomerization to a side-on intermediate, in agreement with previous density functional theory calculations.
