Abstract
A simple and effective organolithium approach to the synthesis of 2-substituted benzo[cd]indoles from peri-dihalonaphthalenes and nitriles has been developed. The reaction proceeds via a surprisingly easy intramolecular aromatic nucleophilic substitution facilitated by the "clothespin effect". The discovered transformation provides good isolated yields, allows usage of an extensive range of nitriles, and demonstrates a good substituents tolerance. UV-absorption and NMR spectra of the obtained benzo[cd]indoles and their protonated forms demonstrated exclusive protonation to the indole nitrogen atom even in the presence of two NMe2 groups in positions 5 and 6 (i. e. "proton sponge" moiety).

Abstract
The rhodium(III)-catalyzed C8-spiroannulation of 1-aminonaphthalenes with maleimides is described herein. Initially formed C8-alkenylated 1-aminonaphthalenes can intercept nucleophilic 1-amino groups through the intramolecular aza-Michael reaction, resulting in the formation of spirofused tetracyclic frameworks. This protocol displayed a wide substrate scope and a broad functional group compatibility. The synthetic utility of this process is demonstrated by the gram-scale synthesis, late-stage modification, and synthetic transformations.

Abstract
Substituted benzo[cd]indoles are one of the most attractive frameworks because of their wide range of biological and optical activities. Herein, a copper-catalyzed one-step synthesis of biologically important polysubstituted benzo[cd]indoles starting from 8-alkynyl-1-naphthylamine derivatives is reported. In this protocol, many substituents tolerated the reaction conditions and produced (Z)-benzo[cd]indoles in good yields. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicated that the reaction proceeds via a stereoselective intramolecular trans-addition and SN-Ar reaction with high selectivity and high yields. The synthesized polysubstituted (Z)-benzo[cd]indoles possess sulfonamide building blocks, which make them candidates for bioactive molecules.

Abstract
A novel approach to the direct construction of tricyclic nitrogen heterocycles based on gold-catalyzed cascade cyclization of aminoallenynes is described. The expected biscyclization reaction of hydroxyisobutyryl-protected aminoallenynes was efficiently promoted by a catalytic amount of BrettPhosAuNTf2 in the presence of iPrOH to produce 1,2-dihydrobenzo[cd]indole derivatives in good yields. When the reaction was combined with Friedel-Crafts acylation or palladium-catalyzed N-arylation, the resulting tricyclic products were efficiently converted into nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic compounds (N-PACs) with highly conjugated π-electron systems. A newly obtained hexacyclic indolium salt showed characteristic concentration-dependent absorption and emission properties.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalyzed direct C-H bond functionalization is recognized as an efficient strategy to assemble heterocyclic frameworks. For this purpose, directing groups (DGs) installation on an organic molecule has remained a widely exploited strategy for the years. The installation of directing groups, especially for the amine, alcohol and thiol containing reactants and their removal after the reaction need additional steps. In this regard, the use of free amine, hydroxyl and sulfhydryl as directing groups in native form is advantageous and in recent times, these transformations have stirred undisputable advancements for applications to heterocycle synthesis. In this review, the aromatic sp2 -C attached free amine, hydroxyl and sulfhydryl as native functionalities are shown to be useful for the construction of five to seven-membered N-, O- and S-heterocycles.
