A Synthetic Strategy for Cofacial Porphyrin-Based Homo- and Heterobimetallic Complexes

Unsymmetric Co-Facial "Salixpyrrole" Hydrogen Evolution Catalysts: Two Metals are Better than One

Designing ligand architectures that can mimic enzyme active sites is a promising approach for developing efficient small molecule activation catalysts for sustainable energy applications. Some key design features include chemically distinct binding pockets for multiple metal centers and a three-dimensional structure that controls the positioning of catalytic sites. With these principles in mind, mono- and bimetallic unsymmetric cofacial palladium complexes, 2 and 3, respectively, bearing ligands with calixpyrrole and salen coordination sites, or "salixpyrrole" ligands, are reported. These species were accessed in a straightforward Schiff-base reaction with appreciable yields. In addition, both 2 and 3 were found to be active hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts using para-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate as the proton source. The two salixpyrrole species displayed different mechanisms of action, with 2 showing a second-order dependence on acid concentration, whereas 3 exhibited a first-order dependence. Moreover, the bimetallic catalyst was significantly more efficient, with higher turnover frequencies, 4640 s-1 vs 1680 s-1 for 2, and lower overpotentials, 0.39 V vs 0.69 V for 2. The results reported herein provide proof-of-concept that bimetallic catalysts with chemically distinct binding sites demonstrate enhanced catalytic properties in comparison to monometallic or symmetric analogues.

Understanding Cooperativity in Homo- and Heterometallic Complexes: From Basic Concepts to Design

Cooperative effects have attracted considerable attention in recent years. These effects are ubiquitous in chemistry and biology and can govern interactions of proteins with other biomolecules, mechanisms of supramolecular recognition and polymerization, catalysis, assembly of compounds on surfaces, and physical properties such as magnetic, electronic or optical properties, e. g. Consequently, the understanding of cooperative effects can lead to a structure-property relation that can pave the way to future applications in various research areas; however, with regard to cooperative effects in homo- and heterometallic complexes, we still are at the beginning of understanding. Nevertheless, concepts to describe cooperativity of metal centers as well as methodologies to investigate and model these effects have emerged over the last years. This concept article gives an overview of these existing concepts, approaches, and strategies to understand cooperative effects in homo- and heterometallic complexes. Special emphasis is put on concepts to define cooperative effects, their quantification, as well as methods to investigate cooperative effects.

An exchange coupled meso-meso linked vanadyl porphyrin dimer for quantum information processing

We report here the synthesis of a new meso-meso (m-m) singly linked vanadyl-porphyrin dimer that crystallizes in two different pseudo-polymorphs. The single crystal continuous-wave electron paramagnetic resonance investigation evidences a small but crucial isotropic exchange interaction, J, between the two tilted, and thus distinguishable, spin centers of the order of 10^-2 cm^-1. The experimental and DFT studies evidence a correlation between J values and porphyrin plane tilting angle and distortion. Pulsed EPR analysis shows that the two vanadyl dimers maintain the coherence time of the monomer. With the obtained spin Hamiltonian parameters, we identify suitable transitions that could be used as computational basis states. Our results, coupled with the evaporability of porphyrin systems, establish this class of dimers as extremely promising for quantum information processing applications.

Solvent dependent triplet state delocalization in a co-facial porphyrin heterodimer

The excited triplet state of a cofacial aluminum(III) porphyrin-phosphorus(V) porphyrin heterodimer is investigated using transient EPR spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. In the dimer, the two porphyrins are bound covalently to each other via a μ-oxo bond between the Al and P centres, which results in strong electronic interaction between the porphyrin rings. The spin polarized transient EPR spectrum of the dimer is narrower than the spectra of the constituent monomers and the magnitude of the zero-field splitting parameter D is solvent dependent, decreasing as the polarity of the solvent increases. The quantum chemical calculations show that the spin density of the triplet state is delocalized over both porphyrins, while magnetophotoselection measurements reveal that, in contrast to the value of D, the relative orientation of the ZFS axes and the excitation transition dipole moments are not solvent dependent. Together the results indicate that triplet state wavefunction is delocalized over both porphyrins and has a modest degree of charge-transfer character that increases with increasing solvent polarity. The sign of the spin polarization pattern of the dimer triplet state is opposite to that of the monomers. The positive sign of D predicted for the monomers and dimer by the quantum chemical calculations implies that the different signs of the spin polarization patterns is a result of a difference in the spin selectivity of the intersystem crossing.

Metal-to-Metal Distance Modulated Au(I)/Ru(II) Cyclophanyl Complexes: Cooperative Effects in Photoredox Catalysis

The modular synthesis of Au(I)/Ru(II) decorated mono- and heterobimetallic complexes with π-conjugated [2.2]paracyclophane is described. [2.2]Paracyclophane serves as a rigid spacer which holds the metal centers in precise spatial orientations and allows metal-to-metal distance modulation. A broad set of architectural arrangements of pseudo -geminal, -ortho, -meta, and -para substitution patterns were employed. Metal-to-metal distance modulation of Au(I)/Ru(II) heterobimetallic complexes and the innate transannular π-communication of the cyclophanyl scaffold provides a promising platform for the investigations of structure-activity relationship and cooperative effects. The Au(I)/Ru(II) heterobimetallic cyclophanyl complexes are stable, easily accessible, and exhibit promising catalytic activity in the visible-light promoted arylative Meyer-Schuster rearrangement.

Metal-to-Metal Distance Modulation by Ligand Design: A Case Study of Structure-Property Correlation in Planar Chiral Cyclophanyl Metal Complexes

Multinuclear metal complexes have seen tremendous progress in synthetic advances, their versatile structural features, and emerging applications. Here, we conceptualize Metal-to-Metal distance modulation in cyclophanyl metal complexes by bridging ligand design employing the co-facially stacked cyclophanyl-derived pseudo-geminal, -ortho, -meta, and -para constitutional isomers grafted with N-, O-, and P- containing chelates that allow the installation of diverse (hetero)metallic moieties in a distance-defined and spatially-oriented relation to one another. Metal-to-Metal distance modulation and innate transannular "through-space" π-π electronic interactions via the co-facially stacked benzene rings in cyclophanyl-derived complexes as well as their specific stereochemical structural features (element of planar chirality) are crucial factors that contribute to the tuning of structure-property relationships, which stand at the very center from the perspective of cooperative effects in catalysis as well as emerging material applications.

Novel Cofacial Porphyrin-Based Homo- and Heterotrimetallic Complexes of Transition Metals

We present a straightforward and generally applicable synthesis route for cofacially linked homo- and heterotrimetallic trisporphyin complexes. The protocol encompasses synthesising the first aryl-based, trans-o-phenylene trisporphyrin starting from pyrrole and benzaldehyde with an overall yield of 3.6 %. It also allows investigating the respective cis-isomer as the first conformationally restricted planar-chiral trisporphyrin. The free-base ligand was used in subsequent metalation reactions to afford the corresponding homotrimetallic Mn(III)-, Fe(III)-, Ni(II)-, Cu(II)-, Zn(II)- and Pd(II) complexes - additionally, a small adaptation of the protocol resulted in the defined Ni(II)Fe(III)Ni(II) complex in a total yield of 2.3 %. By monitoring Ni(II) insertion into the empty trimeric ligands, we affirmed that the outer porphyrin rings are filled before the internal ring. The molecular species were characterised by 1 H NMR, UV-Vis, photoluminescence, IR, MS, CID, and high-resolution IMS measurements.
