Enabling Control over Mechanical Conformity and Luminescence in Molecular Crystals: Interaction Engineering in Action

Halogen-bonded charge-transfer co-crystal scintillators for high-resolution X-ray imaging

The development of high-quality organic scintillators encounters challenges primarily associated with the weak X-ray absorption ability resulting from the presence of low atomic number elements. An effective strategy involves the incorporation of halogen-containing molecules into the system through co-crystal engineering. Herein, we synthesized a highly fluorescent dye, 2,5-di(4-pyridyl)thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (Py2TTz), with a fluorescence quantum yield of 12.09%. Subsequently, Py2TTz was co-crystallized with 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (I2F4B) and 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene (I3F3B) obtaining Py2TTz-I2F4 and Py2TTz-I3F3. Among them, Py2TTz-I2F4 exhibited exceptional scintillation properties, including an ultrafast decay time (1.426 ns), a significant radiation luminescence intensity (146% higher than Bi3Ge4O12), and a low detection limit (70.49 nGy s-1), equivalent to 1/78th of the detection limit for medical applications (5.5 μGy s-1). This outstanding scintillation performance can be attributed to the formation of halogen-bonding between I2F4B and Py2TTz. Theoretical calculations and single-crystal structures demonstrate the formation of halogen-bond-induced rather than π-π-induced charge-transfer cocrystals, which not only enhances the X-ray absorption ability and material conductivity under X-ray exposure, but also constrains molecular vibration and rotation, and thereby reducing non-radiative transition rate and sharply increasing its fluorescence quantum yields. Based on this, the flexible X-ray film prepared based on Py2TTz-I2F4 achieved an ultrahigh spatial resolution of 26.8 lp per mm, underscoring the superiority of this strategy in developing high-performance organic scintillators.

Correlating structure and photophysical properties in thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole crystal derivatives for use in solid-state photonic and fluorescence-based optical devices

There is a growing demand for new fluorescent small molecule dyes for solid state applications in the photonics and optoelectronics industry. Thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (TTz) is an organic heterocycle moiety which has previously shown remarkable properties as a conjugated polymer and in solution-based studies. For TTz-based small molecules to be incorporated in solid-state fluorescence-based optical devices, a thorough elucidation of their structure-photophysical properties needs to be established. Herein, we have studied four TTz-based materials functionalized with alkyl appendages of varying carbon chain lengths. We report the single crystal structures of the TTz derivatives, three of which were previously unknown. The packing modes of the crystals reveal that molecular arrangements are largely governed by a chorus of synergistic intermolecular non-covalent interactions. Three crystals packed in herringbone mode and one crystal packed in slipped stacks proving that alkyl appendages modulate structural organization in TTz-based materials. Steady state and time-resolved photophysical properties of these crystals were studied via diffuse-reflectance, micro-Raman, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The crystals fluoresce from orange-red to blue spanning through the whole gamut of the visible spectrum. We have established that photophysical properties are a function of crystal packing in symmetrically substituted TTz-based materials. This correlation was then utilized to fabricate crystalline blends. We demonstrate, for the first time, that symmetrically substituted donor-acceptor-donor TTz-based materials can be used for phosphor-converted color-tuning and white-light emission. Given the cost effectiveness, ease of synthesis and now a structure-photophysics correlation, we present a compelling case for the adoption of TTz-based materials in solid-state photonic and fluorescence-based optical devices.

Supramolecular assemblies in the molecular complexes of 4-cyanophenylboronic acid with different N-donor ligands

Molecular complexes of 4-cyanophenylboronic acid (CB) with various N-donor compounds having different conformational features, for example, rigid (1,10-phenanthroline (110phen), 4,7-phenanthroline (47phen), 1,7-phenanthroline (17phen) and acridine (acr)) and linear (1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpyea), 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethene (bpyee) and 4,4'-azopyridine (azopy)), have been reported. In all complexes, the -B(OH)2 moiety is found to be in a syn-anti confirmation, with the exception of structures containing 110phen, bpyee, and azopy, wherein, syn-syn conformation is observed. Further, CB molecules remain intact in all structures except in the complexes with some linear N-donor ligands, wherein -B(OH)2 transforms to monoester (-B(OH)(OCH3)) prior to the formation of corresponding molecular complexes. In such boronic monoester complexes, the conformation of -B(OH)(OCH3) is syn-anti with respect to the -OH and -OCH3 groups. Also, complexes mediated by azopy and bpyee exist in both hydrated and anhydrous forms. In these anhydrous structures, the recognition pattern is through homomeric (juxtaposed -CN and -B(OH)2) as well as heteromeric (between hetero N-atom and -B(OH)2) O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds, while only heteromeric O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds hold co-formers in all other structures. Depending upon the conformational features of both co-formers, molecules are packed in crystal lattices in the form of stacked layers, helical chains, and crossed ribbons. All structures are fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and phase purity is established by powder X-ray diffraction. Additionally, correlation among structures is explained by calculating a similarity index and performing a Hirshfeld surface analysis to quantify the strength and effectiveness of different types of intermolecular bonds that stabilize these structures along with the presentation of energy frameworks, representing the strength of the interactions in the form gradient cylinders. Also, the morphology of each complex was computed by BFDH methodology to correlate with the actual crystal morphology and packing arrangement.
