Chiral Oligothiophenes with Remarkable Circularly Polarized Luminescence and Electroluminescence in Thin Films

Hierarchical chiral MOFs with the induced chirality of AIE ligands exhibiting non-reciprocal CPL

Two pairs of chiral MOFs with hierarchical chiral structures were constructed through assembly of achiral AIE-type multidentate linkers and chiral camphoric acid. Non-reciprocal circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) can be observed on the macroscopic due to the coexistence of optical anisotropic and chiroptical nature. This study provides a new perspective to recognize and construct chiral crystalline materials.

Impact of Temperature on the Chiroptical Properties of Thin Films of Chiral Thiophene-based Oligomers

According to the theoretical model based on the Mueller matrix approach, the experimental electronic circular dichroism (ECD) for thin films of chiral organic dyes can be expressed as the sum of several contributions, two of which are the most significant: 1) an intrinsic component (CDiso) invariant upon sample orientation, reflecting the molecular and/or supramolecular chirality, due to 3D-chiral nanoscopic structures; 2) a non-reciprocal component (LDLB) which inverts its sign upon sample flipping, which arises from the interaction of linear dichroism and linear birefringence in locally anisotropic domains, expression of 2D-chiral micro/mesoscopic structures. In this work, we followed in parallel through ECD and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) the temperature evolution of the supramolecular arrangements of thin films of five structurally related chiral thiophene-based oligomers with different LDLB/CDiso ratio. By increasing the temperature, regardless of phase transitions observed by DSC analysis, systems with strong CDiso revealed no changes in the ECD spectrum, while compounds with dominant LDLB contribution underwent a gradual (and reversible) reduction of (apparent) ECD signals. These findings demonstrated that the concomitant occurrence of intrinsic and non-reciprocal components in the ECD spectrum of thin films of chiral organic dyes is strictly correlated with solid-state organizations of different stability.

A Perspective on the Simulation of Electronic Circular Dichroism and Circularly Polarized Luminescence Spectra in Chiral Solid Materials

Chiral materials have shown tremendous potential for many technological applications, such as optoelectronics, sensing, magnetism, information technology, and imaging. Characterization of these materials is mostly based on chiroptical spectroscopies, such as electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). These experimental measurements would greatly benefit from theoretical simulations for interpretation of the spectra as well as predictions on new materials. While ECD and CPL simulations are well established for molecular systems, they are not for materials. In this Perspective, we describe the theoretical quantities necessary to simulate ECD and CPL spectra in oriented systems. Then, we discuss the approximate strategies currently used to perform these calculations, what computational machinery is already available to develop more general approaches, and some of the open challenges for the simulation of ECD and CPL spectra in solid materials. When methods that are as reliable and computationally efficient as those for molecules are developed, these simulations will provide invaluable insight and guidance for the rational design of optically active materials.

Magnetic Circular Dichroism Elucidates Molecular Interactions in Aggregated Chiral Organic Materials

Chiral materials formed by aggregated organic compounds play a fundamental role in chiral optoelectronics, photonics and spintronics. Nonetheless, a precise understanding of the molecular interactions involved remains an open problem. Here we introduce magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) as a new tool to elucidate molecular interactions and structural parameters of a supramolecular system. A detailed analysis of MCD together with electronic circular dichroism spectra combined to ab initio calculations unveils essential information on the geometry and energy levels of a self-assembled thin film made of a carbazole di-bithiophene chiral molecule. This approach can be extended to a generality of chiral organic materials and can help rationalizing the fundamental interactions leading to supramolecular order. This in turn could enable a better understanding of structure-property relationships, resulting in a more efficient material design.

Chiral diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-based oligothiophenes: Synthesis and characterization of aggregated states in solution and thin films

In this work, we synthesized a family of three structurally related chiral oligothiophenes containing a 1,4-diketo-3,6-diarylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP) unit as the central core; functionalized with the same (S)-3,7-dimethyl-1-octyl chains on the nitrogen atoms of lactam moieties, they only differ in the number of lateral thiophene units. The aggregation modes of these π-conjugated chiral systems were evaluated by means of UV-Vis absorption and ECD spectroscopies in conditions of solution aggregation (CHCl3 /MeOH mixtures) and as thin films, describing in particular the impact of the π-conjugation length on the chiroptical properties. Interestingly, we found that the variable number of thiophene units attached to the DPP core affects not only the propensity to aggregation but also the aggregates' helicity. ECD revealed information about the supramolecular arrangement of these molecules, that one would not obtain by using conventional optical spectroscopy and microscopy techniques. Thin film samples revealed very different aggregation modes with respect to solution aggregates, casting doubts on the common assumption that these latter may serve as simple models of the former ones.

Spatially Resolved Chiroptical Spectroscopies Emphasizing Recent Applications to Thin Films of Chiral Organic Dyes

Instrumental techniques able to identify and structurally characterize the aggregation states in thin films of chiral organic π-conjugated materials, from the first-order supramolecular arrangement up to the microscopic and mesoscopic scale, are very helpful for clarifying structure-property relationships. Chiroptical imaging is currently gaining a central role, for its ability of mapping local supramolecular structures in thin films. The present review gives an overview of electronic circular dichroism imaging (ECDi), circularly polarized luminescence imaging (CPLi), and vibrational circular dichroism imaging (VCDi), with a focus on their applications on thin films of chiral organic dyes as case studies.

Heterocyclic [9]Helicenes Exhibiting Bright Circularly Polarized Luminescence

We describe a concise synthetic strategy for the preparation of heterocyclic [9]helicenes and a simple preparative-scale protocol for the optical resolution of the resulting M- and P-enantiomers. The helicenes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction along with a range of spectroscopic and computational techniques. A fluorescence quantum yield of up to 65 % was observed, and the chiroptical properties of both M- and P-helicenes revealed large dissymmetry factors. The circularly polarized luminescence brightness reaches up to 17 M-1  cm-1 , as measured experimentally and verified computationally, which makes this the highest circularly polarized luminescence brightness among heterocyclic helicenes. We describe how chiroptical properties (both circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence) can be described and predicted using quantum chemical calculations. The synthetic approach also reveals by-products that originate from internal oxidation reactions, presumably mediated by the close proximity of the π-surfaces in the helicene structure.

Aggregation behaviour of pyrene-based luminescent materials, from molecular design and optical properties to application

Molecular aggregates are self-assembled from multiple molecules via weak intermolecular interactions, and new chemical and physical properties can emerge compared to their individual molecule. With the development of aggregate science, much research has focused on the study of the luminescence behaviour of aggregates rather than single molecules. Pyrene as a classical fluorophore has attracted great attention due to its diverse luminescence behavior depending on the solution state, molecular packing pattern as well as morphology, resulting in wide potential applications. For example, pyrene prefers to emit monomer emission in dilute solution but tends to form a dimer via π-π stacking in the aggregation state, resulting in red-shifted emission with quenched fluorescence and quantum yield. Over the past two decades, much effort has been devoted to developing novel pyrene-based fluorescent molecules and determining the luminescence mechanism for potential applications. Since the concept of "aggregation-induced emission (AIE)" was proposed by Tang et al. in 2001, aggregate science has been established, and the aggregated luminescence behaviour of pyrene-based materials has been extensively investigated. New pyrene-based emitters have been designed and synthesized not only to investigate the relationships between the molecular structure and properties and advanced applications but also to examine the effect of the aggregate morphology on their optical and electronic properties. Indeed, new aggregated pyrene-based molecules have emerged with unique properties, such as circularly polarized luminescence, excellent fluorescence and phosphorescence and electroluminescence, ultra-high mobility, etc. These properties are independent of their molecular constituents and allow for a number of cutting-edge technological applications, such as chemosensors, organic light-emitting diodes, organic field effect transistors, organic solar cells, Li-batteries, etc. Reviews published to-date have mainly concentrated on summarizing the molecular design and multi-functional applications of pyrene-based fluorophores, whereas the aggregation behaviour of pyrene-based luminescent materials has received very little attention. The majority of the multi-functional applications of pyrene molecules are not only closely related to their molecular structures, but also to the packing model they adopt in the aggregated state. In this review, we will summarize the intriguing optoelectronic properties of pyrene-based luminescent materials boosted by aggregation behaviour, and systematically establish the relationship between the molecular structure, aggregation states, and optoelectronic properties. This review will provide a new perspective for understanding the luminescence and electronic transition mechanism of pyrene-based materials and will facilitate further development of pyrene chemistry.

Circularly Polarized Microscopy of Thin Films of Chiral Organic Dyes

We introduce an optical microscopy technique, circularly polarized microscopy or CPM, able to afford spatially resolved electronic circular dichroism (ECD) of thin films of chiral organic semiconductors through a commercial microscope equipped with a camera and inexpensive optics. Provided the dichroic ratio is sufficiently large, the spatial resolution is on the order of the μm and is only limited by the magnification optics integrated in the microscope. We apply CPM to thin films of small chiral π-conjugated molecules, which gave rise to ordered aggregates in the thin layer. Primarily, conventional ECD can reveal and characterize chiral supramolecular structures and possible interferences between anisotropic properties of solid samples; however, it cannot generally account for the spatial distribution of such properties. CPM offers a characterization of supramolecular chirality and of commingling polarization anisotropies of the material, describing their local distribution. To validate CPM, we demonstrated that it can be adopted to quantify the local ECD of samples characterized by intense signals, virtually on any standard optical microscope.

Brightening up Full-Color and White Circularly Polarized Luminescence through Chiral Induction and Circularly Polarized Light Excitation

Preparation of chiral materials from achiral helical polymers has aroused great interest among researchers. In this work, chiral small molecules were utilized to accomplish chiral induction toward racemic helical polyacetylene via intermolecular π-π stacking by which chiral films with strong optical activity were fabricated. Furthermore, introducing fluorescent components generated full-color and white circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). A CPL generation mechanism is proposed accordingly, namely circularly polarized light excitation (CP-Ex). CPL emission and amplification of the luminescence dissymmetry factor were achieved under the synergetic effect of CP-Ex and chirality transfer. The CP-Ex mechanism was further verified by the double-layered film consisting of a chiral layer and a fluorescent layer. More noticeably, for double-layered films, the sense of CPL signals can be switched by changing the direction of excitation light. This work opens up new strategies for exploring tunable multiple- and white-color CPL materials.

Efficient Narrowband Circularly Polarized Light Emitters Based on 1,4-B,N-embedded Rigid Donor-Acceptor Helicenes

Narrow-band emission is essential for applicable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) active materials in ultrahigh-definition CP-OLEDs. One of the most promising classes of CPL active molecules, helicenes, however, typically exhibit broad emission with a large Stokes shift. We present, herein, a design strategy capitalizing on intramolecular donor-acceptor interactions between nitrogen and boron atoms to address this issue. 1,4-B,N-embedded configurationally stable single- and double helicenes were synthesized straightforwardly. Both helicenes show unprecedentedly narrow fluorescence and CPL bands (full width at half maximum between 17-28 nm, 0.07-0.13 eV) along with high fluorescence quantum yields (72-85 %). Quantum chemical calculations revealed that the relative localization of the natural transition orbitals, mainly on the rigid core of the molecule, and small values of root-mean-square displacements between S₀ and S₁ state geometries, contribute to the narrower emission.

Aggregation Modes of Chiral Diketopyrrolo[3,4‐ c ]pyrrole Dyes in Solution and Thin Films

The chiroptical features of chiral diketopyrrolo[3,4‐c]pyrrole (DPP) derivatives have been only marginally investigated to date. In this regard, we have synthesized ad hoc four chiral DPP dyes, functionalized with enantiopure alkyl groups from natural sources either on the lactam moieties or on the terminal positions of the π‐conjugated backbone, to promote an efficient self‐assembly into chiral supramolecular structures. For each of them, the aggregation modes has been investigated by absorbance and ECD spectroscopies in conditions of solution aggregation and on thin films, considering the effects of deposition technique (drop casting vs. spin coating) and post‐deposition operations (solvent and thermal annealing). The effect of the structure of lateral π‐conjugated units attached to the central DPP scaffold, as well as that of the position of the alkyl chiral group, has been assessed. ECD revealed superior capability, compared to absorbance spectroscopy, to provide information on the aggregation modes and to detect the possible co‐existence of multiple aggregation pathways.

Axially chiral 1,1'-bicarbazolyls with near-ultraviolet circularly polarized luminescence

The facile synthesis and chiroptical properties of a new family of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials, axially chiral 1,1'-bicarbazolyls (BiCz), are reported. The BiCz derivatives emitted intense near-ultraviolet photoluminescence, with a peak at ∼380 nm. The BiCz enantiomers showed mirror-image circular dichroism and CPL, with g_lum values on the order of 10^-4 in solution.

Imaging deposition-dependent supramolecular chiral organisation

Thin films of a chiral diketopyrrolopyrrole derivative were imaged with spatially-defined Mueller Matrix Polarimetry, focussing on the Circular Dichroism signal, giving unique insight into the impact that deposition techniques and thermal annealing can have on chiral supramolecular structures in the solid state, where homogeneity was observed for spun-coated films while drop-coating afforded chiroptical diversity in the material, a feature invisible to absorption spectroscopy or optical microscopy.

Supported Metal Catalysts for the Synthesis of N-Heterocycles

Nitrogen-containing heterocycles are important scaffolds for a large number of compounds with biological, pharmaceutical, industrial and optoelectronic applications. A wide range of different methodologies for the preparation of N-heterocycles are based on metal-catalyzed cyclization of suitable substrates. Due to the growing interest in Green Chemistry criteria over the past two decades, the use of supported metal catalysts in the preparation of N-heterocycles has become a central topic in Organic Chemistry. Here we will give a critical overview of all the solid supported metal catalysts applied in the synthesis of N-heterocycles, following a systematic approach as a function of the type of support: (i) metal catalysts supported on inorganic matrices; (ii) metal catalysts supported on organic matrices; (iii) metal catalysts supported on hybrid inorganic-organic matrices. In particular, we will try to emphasize the effective heterogeneity and recyclability of the described metal catalysts, specifying which studies were carried out in order to evaluate these aspects.

Synthetic Methods for the Preparation of Conformationally Restricted Analogues of Nicotine

In the context of naturally occurring nitrogen heterocycles, nicotine is a chiral alkaloid present in tobacco plants, which can target and stimulate nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), a class of ligand-gated ion channels commonly located throughout the human brain. Due to its well-known toxicity for humans, there is considerable interest in the development of synthetic analogues; in particular, conformationally restricted analogues of nicotine have emerged as promising drug molecules for selective nAChR-targeting ligands. In the present mini-review, we will describe the synthesis of the conformationally restricted analogues of nicotine involving one or more catalytic processes. In particular, we will follow a systematic approach as a function of the heteroarene structure, considering: (a) 2,3-annulated tricyclic derivatives; (b) 3,4-annulated tricyclic derivatives; (c) tetracyclic derivatives; and (d) other polycyclic derivatives. For each of them we will also consider, when carried out, biological studies on their activity for specific nAChR subunits.

Two-Dimensional Chiral Polyrotaxane Monolayer with Emergent and Steerable Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Here, we propose a mechanically interlocked strategy to achieve a 2D chiral polyrotaxane (2D CPR) monolayer with emergent and steerable CPL activity by utilizing β-cyclodextrin as the chiral wheel and a luminescent dynamic covalent organic framework as 2D polymeric axle. Such methodology, integrating host-guest and dynamic covalent chemistry, enabled the direct construction of a delaminated 2D CPR monolayer with extraordinarily large size (up to tens of micrometers) and simultaneously endowed chirality to the extended 2D CPR network to generate CPL activity. Importantly, not only the structure but also the CPL performance of the 2D CPR network can be further regulated by the feeding amount of β-cyclodextrin. This work demonstrated a monolayered 2D CPR with CPL activity for the first time. The insightful structure-property relationship of the induced CPL will be of benefit for a deeper understanding of the excited-state chirality of 2D chiral nanomaterials.

Self-Consistent Auxiliary Density Perturbation Theory

The working equations for the extension of auxiliary density perturbation theory (ADPT) to hybrid functionals, employing the variational fitting of the Fock potential, are derived. The response equations in the resulting self-consistent ADPT (SC-ADPT) are solved iteratively with an adapted Eirola-Nevanlinna algorithm. As a result, a memory and CPU time efficient implementation of perturbation theory free of four-center electron repulsion integrals (ERIs) is obtained. Our validation calculations of SC-ADPT static and dynamic polarizabilities show quantitative agreement with corresponding coupled perturbed Hartree-Fock and Kohn-Sham results employing four-center ERIs. The comparison of SC-ADPT hybrid functional polarizabilities with coupled cluster reference calculations yield semiquantitative agreement. The presented systematic study of the dynamic polarizabilities of oligothiophenes shows that hybrid functionals can overcome the pathological misplacement of excitation poles by the local density and generalized gradient approximations. Good agreement with experimental dynamic polarizabilities for all studied oligothiophenes is achieved with range-separated hybrid functionals in the framework of SC-ADPT.

Impact of chirality on the aggregation modes of l-phenylalanine- and d-glucose-decorated phenylene–thiophene oligomers

Three l-phenylalanine- or d-glucose-decorated phenylene–thiophene oligomers have been studied using UV-Vis and ECD spectroscopies in different conditions of solution aggregation and thin films, investigating the impact of chirality on their aggregation modes.
