A General Approach to Intermolecular Olefin Hydroacylation through Light-Induced HAT Initiation: An Efficient Synthesis of Long-Chain Aliphatic Ketones and Functionalized Fatty Acids

Photocatalytic Synthesis of β-Keto Primary Chlorides by Selective Chlorocarbonylation of Olefins

Functionalized primary alkyl chlorides are precursors to a plethora of scaffolds but their access from chemical feedstocks remains challenging. Herein, we report a concise dual Ni/photoredox catalytic protocol for regioselective chlorocarbonylation of unactivated alkenes that enables rapid access to β-keto primary chlorides. The catalytic process features an extensive substrate scope, scalability and functional group tolerance. The Ni/photocatalytic Cl⋅ generation and subsequent cross-coupling is implicated for the process based on the control experiments and DFT study. The synthetic utility of the protocol has been further corroborated through functionalization of complex substrates and modifications of the product.

Photoinduced, Metal-Free Hydroacylation of Aromatic Alkynes for Synthesis of α,β-Unsaturated Ketones via C(sp3)-H Functionalization

Despite the notable advancements made over the past decade in achieving carbon-carbon bonds by transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling processes, metal-free cross-coupling reactions for hydroacylation of aromatic alkynes via C(sp3)-H functionalization are still rare and highly desired. Here we report a metal-free reliable approach for the synthesis of α,β-unsaturated ketones (chalcones) via C(sp3)-H functionalization using MeCN:H2O as green solvent, Eosin Y as organic photocatalyst, and ambient air as oxidant. More significantly, this strategy can effectively transform a variety of methyl arenes and aromatic alkynes into the desired product. With high atom efficiency, use of green solvents, metal-free nature, environmental friendliness, and visible light as a renewable energy source, this method is compatible with biologically active molecules.

Brønsted Acid-Promoted Intermolecular Dearomative Photocycloaddition of Bicyclic Azaarenes with Olefins under Aerobic Conditions

Herein, we present a simplified reaction protocol for the dearomatization of bicyclic azaarenes via photochemical cycloaddition with alkenes using an Ir(III) photosensitizer, trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), dichloroethane, and a blue light-emitting diode. An efficient protonation of azaarenes with TFA enhances the reactivity of triplet azaarene toward olefins, enabling the photocycloaddition under aerobic conditions. The protocol applies to a broad range of substrates. Control experiments indicate a strong correlation between the degree of protonation of azaarene and the product yield.

Recent advances in acyl radical enabled reactions between aldehydes and alkenes

Radical-mediated functionalization of alkenes has been emerging as an elegant and straightforward protocol to increase molecule complexity. Moreover, the abstraction of a hydrogen atom from aldehydes to afford acyl radicals has evolved as a rising star due to its high atom-economy and the ready availability of aldehydes. Considering the great influence and synthetic potential of acyl radical enabled reactions between aldehydes and alkenes, we provide a summary of the state of the art in this field with a specific emphasis on the working models and corresponding mechanisms. The discussion is divided according to the kind of alkenes and reaction type.
