Dual Electroactivity in a Covalent Organic Network with Mechanically Interlocked Pillar[5]arenes

Formation of polyrotaxane crystals driven by dative boron-nitrogen bonds

The integration of mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) into purely organic crystalline materials is expected to produce materials with properties that are not accessible using more classic approaches. To date, this integration has proved elusive. We present a dative boron-nitrogen bond-driven self-assembly strategy that allows for the preparation of polyrotaxane crystals. The polyrotaxane nature of the crystalline material was confirmed by both single-crystal x-ray diffraction analysis and cryogenic high-resolution low-dose transmission electron microscopy. Enhanced softness and greater elasticity are seen for the polyrotaxane crystals than for nonrotaxane polymer controls. This finding is rationalized in terms of the synergetic microscopic motion of the rotaxane subunits. The present work thus highlights the benefits of integrating MIMs into crystalline materials.

Macrocycle-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks

Macrocycles with well-defined cavities and the ability to undergo supramolecular interactions are classical materials that have played an essential role in materials science. However, one of the most substantial barriers limiting the utilization of macrocycles is their aggregation, which blocks the active regions. Among many attempted strategies to prevent such aggregation, installing macrocycles into covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which are porous and stable reticular networks, has emerged as an ideal solution. The resulting macrocycle-based COFs (M-COFs) preserve the macrocycles' unique activities, enabling applications in various fields such as single-atom catalysis, adsorption/separation, optoelectronics, phototherapy, and structural design of forming single-layered or mechanically interlocked COFs. The resulting properties are unmatchable by any combination of macrocycles with other substrates, opening a new chapter in advanced materials. This review focuses on the latest progress in the concepts, synthesis, properties, and applications of M-COFs, and presents an in-depth outlook on the challenges and opportunities in this emerging field.

Constructing Mechanical Shuttles in a Three-dimensional (3D) Porous Architecture for Selective Transport of Lithium Ions

Lithium (Li) extraction from brines is a major barrier to the sustainable development of batteries and alloys; however, current separation technology suffers from a trade-off between ion selectivity and permeability. Herein, a crown ether mechanically interlocked 3D porous organic framework (Crown-POF) was prepared as the porous filler of thin-film nanocomposite membranes. Crown-POF with penta-coordinated (four O_crown atoms and one N_tert-amine atom) adsorption sites enables a special recognition for Li⁺ ion. Moreover, the four N_tert-amine atoms on each POF branch facilitate the flipping motion of Li⁺ ion along the skeletal thread, while retaining the specified binding pattern. Accordingly, the crown ether interlocked POF network displays an ultrafast ion transfer rate, over 10 times that of the conventional porous materials. Notably, the nanocomposite membrane gives high speed and selectivity for Li⁺ ion transport as compared with other porous solid-based mixed-matrix membranes.

Two-Dimensional Chiral Polyrotaxane Monolayer with Emergent and Steerable Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Here, we propose a mechanically interlocked strategy to achieve a 2D chiral polyrotaxane (2D CPR) monolayer with emergent and steerable CPL activity by utilizing β-cyclodextrin as the chiral wheel and a luminescent dynamic covalent organic framework as 2D polymeric axle. Such methodology, integrating host-guest and dynamic covalent chemistry, enabled the direct construction of a delaminated 2D CPR monolayer with extraordinarily large size (up to tens of micrometers) and simultaneously endowed chirality to the extended 2D CPR network to generate CPL activity. Importantly, not only the structure but also the CPL performance of the 2D CPR network can be further regulated by the feeding amount of β-cyclodextrin. This work demonstrated a monolayered 2D CPR with CPL activity for the first time. The insightful structure-property relationship of the induced CPL will be of benefit for a deeper understanding of the excited-state chirality of 2D chiral nanomaterials.
