Hollow POM@MOF-derived Porous NiMo6 @Co3 O4 for Biothiol Colorimetric Detection

In Situ-Generated Hollow CoFe-LDH/Co-MOF Heterostructure Nanorod Arrays for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Assembling a heterostructure is an effective strategy for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of hybrid materials. Herein, CoFe-layered double hydroxide and Co-metal-organic framework (CoFe-LDH/Co-MOF) hollow heterostructure nanorod arrays are synthesized. First, [Co(DIPL)(H3BTC)(H2O)2]n [named as Co-MOF, DIPL = 2,6-di(pyrid-4-yl)-4-phenylpyridine, H3BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid] crystalline materials with a uniform hollow structure were prepared on the nickel foam. The CoFe-LDH/Co-MOF composite perfectly inherits the original hollow nanorod array morphology after the subsequent electrodeposition process. Optimized CoFe-LDH/Co-MOF hollow heterostructure nanorod arrays display excellent performance in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with ultralow overpotentials of 215 mV to deliver current densities of 10 mA cm-2 and maintain the electrocatalytic activity for a duration as long as 220 h, ranking it one of the non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts for OER. Density functional theory calculations validate the reduction in free energy for the rate-determining step by the synergistic effect of Co-MOF and CoFe-LDH, with the increased charge density and noticeable electron transfer at the Co-O site, which highlights the capability of Co-MOF to finely adjust the electronic structure and facilitate the creation of active sites. This work establishes an experimental and theoretical basis for promoting efficient water splitting through the design of heterostructures in catalysts.

MOFs@POMs-derived bimetallic oxide Fe2(MoO4)3 nanoparticles for sensitive colorimetric detection of salicylic acid in aspirin

A colorimetric sensing method for salicylic acid (SA) was developed by designing and fabricating bimetallic oxide nanozymes. Firstly, by calcinating MIL-100(Fe)@PMo12 (MOFs@POMs) at different temperature, Fe2(MoO4)3-Ts (T = 400℃, 500℃, 600℃, 700℃) nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully prepared. Secondly, by evaluating the peroxidase-like activities, Fe2(MoO4)3-600 NPs shows the best peroxidase-like activity attributed to the Fenton-like effect and the synergistic coupling interaction between Mo and Fe. Finally, based on the specific complexation between SA and Fe3+, a sensitive colorimetric sensor for SA was established, which exhibits superior selectivity and interference with a detection limit of 0.11 μM and a linear range of 10 to 100 μM, the lowest LOD for SA to date, to the best of our knowledge.

Ultralow Ru Single Atoms Confined in Cerium Oxide Nanoglues for Highly-Sensitive and Robust H2 O2 -Related Biocatalytic Diagnosis

Exploring highly efficient, portable, and robust biocatalysts is a great challenge in colorimetric biosensors. To overcome the challenging states in creating single-atom biocatalysts, such as insufficient activity and stability, here, this work has engineered a unique CeO2 support as nanoglue to tightly anchor the Ru single-atom sites (CeO2 -Ru) with strong electronic coupling for achieving highly sensitive and robust H2 O2 -related biocatalytic diagnosis. The morphology and chemical/electronic structure analysis demonstrates that the Ru atoms are well-dispersed on CeO2 surface to form high-density active sites. Benefiting from the unique structure, the prepared CeO2 -Ru exhibits outstanding peroxidase (POD) like catalytic activity and selectivity to H2 O2 . Steady-state kinetic study results show that the CeO2 -Ru presents the highest Vmax and turnover number than the state-of-the-art POD-like biocatalysts. Consequently, the CeO2 -Ru discloses a high efficiency, good selectivity, and robust stability in the colorimetric detection of L-cysteine, glucose, and uric acid. Notably, the limit of detection (LOD) can reach 0.176 × 10-3 m for the L-cysteine, 0.095 × 10-3 m for the glucose, and 0.088 × 10-3 m for the uric acid via cascade reaction. This work suggests that the proposed unique CeO2 nanoglue will offer a new path to create single-atom noble metal biocatalysts and take a step closer to future biotherapeutic and biocatalytic applications.

One stone, two birds: A Cu-S cluster as a laccase-mimicking nanozyme and sulfite activator for phenol remediation in marine environments

Phenols are infamous pollutants in marine environments and present a grave danger to human health, which makes their efficient detection and removal serious issues. Colorimetry is a simple method for detecting phenols in water because phenols can be oxidized by natural laccase and generate a brown product. However, high cost and poor stability impede the wide-spread implementation of natural laccase in phenol detection. To reverse this adverse situation, a nanoscale Cu-S cluster, Cu₄(MPPM)₄ (Cu₄S₄, MPPM = 2-mercapto-5-n-propylpyrimidine), is synthesized. As a stable and inexpensive nanozyme, Cu₄S₄ shows excellent laccase-mimicking activity and prompts the oxidation of phenols. This characteristic makes Cu₄S₄ a perfect option for phenol detection with colorimetry. In addition, Cu₄S₄ also exhibits sulfite activation properties. It can degrade phenols and other pollutants with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Theoretical calculations show good laccase-mimicking and sulfite activation properties originating from appropriate interactions between Cu₄S₄ and substrates. We anticipate that the phenol detection and degradation characteristics of Cu₄S₄ make it a promising material to be used for practical phenol remediation in water environments.

ZIF-67 on Sulfur-Functionalized Graphene Oxide for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

How to overcome the problem of fast capacity fading and low sulfur utilization is the key to promote the practical applications of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Based on the fact that sulfur-functionalized graphene oxide (GO-S) can avoid the loss of sulfur/polysulfides through the strong C-S interaction, and the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) can capture sulfur and catalyze lithium polysulfide (Li₂S_x, 4 ≤ x ≤ 8), the combination of ZIF-S (ZIF-67 after combining with sulfur) with GO-S can be expected to be an excellent electrode material for Li-S batteries due to the synergistic effect. Herein, ZIF-S@GO-S (n) nanocomposites (n = 1, 2, and 3 for the mass ratio of ZIF-67/GO of 4:1, 6:1, and 8:1, respectively) as the cathode materials in Li-S batteries were successfully fabricated, and ZIF-S@GO-S (2) showed better electrochemical performances and cycle stability with a high specific capacity of 1529.5 mA h g^-1 at the initial cycle and 792 mA h g^-1 after 500 cycles at 0.1 C (1 C = 1675 mA h g^-1). The fact that ZIF-S@GO-S (n) can simultaneously improve the conductivity and utilization of S (C-S···S₈ and C-S···S_xLi₂) and the conversion kinetics of Li₂S_x (4 ≤ x ≤ 8) provides a new avenue for designing and fabricating promising cathodes for high-performance Li-S batteries.

Ir Cluster-Anchored MOFs as Peroxidase-Mimetic Nanoreactors for Diagnosing Hydrogen Peroxide-Related Biomarkers

Exploring multifaceted and highly sensitive biosensors is a major challenge in biotechnology and medical diagnosis. Here, we create a new iridium (Ir) cluster-anchored metal-organic framework (MOF, namely, Ir_NCs@Ti-MOF via a coordination-assisted strategy) as a peroxidase (POD)-mimetic nanoreactor for colorimetrically diagnosing hydrogen peroxide-related biomarkers. Owing to the Ir_NCs-N/O coordination of Ti-MOF and unique enzymatic properties of Ir clusters, the Ir_NCs@Ti-MOF exhibits exceptional and exclusive POD-mimetic activities (K_m = 3.94 mM, V_max = 1.70 μM s^-1, and turnover number = 39.64 × 10^-3 s^-1 for H₂O₂), thus demonstrating excellent POD-mimetic detecting activity and also super substrate selectivity, which is considerably more efficient than recently reported POD mimetics. Colorimetric studies disclose that this Ir_NCs@Ti-MOF-based nanoreactor shows multifaceted and efficient diagnosing activities and substrate selectivity, such as a limit of detection (LOD): 14.12 μM for H₂O₂ at a range of 0-900 μM, LOD: 3.41 μM for l-cysteine at a range of 0-50 μM, and LOD: 20.0 μM for glucose at a range of 0-600 μM, which enables an ultrasensitive and visual determination of abundant H₂O₂-related biomarkers. The proposed design will not only provide highly sensitive and cheap colorimetric biosensors in medical resource-limited areas but also offer a new path to engineering customizable enzyme-mimetic nanoreactors as a powerful tool for accurate and rapid diagnosis.

Synthesis and Structure of a Copper-Based Functional Network for Efficient Organic Dye Adsorption

In the work, by incorporating polyoxometalates (POMs) into a copper(II)-based network, a novel three-dimensional (3D) porous framework, [Cu₁₇Cl₃(trz)₁₂]H₃[GaW₁₂O₄₀]·9H₂O (Cu-GaW-TRZ), was successfully prepared and explored for the adsorption of dyes. The adsorption capacity of Cu-GaW-TRZ was calculated as 13.11 mg/g, and the dye adsorption rate equaled 96.2% for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB). Furthermore, this recyclable adsorbent is stable enough without obvious loss of adsorption capacity for at least five runs. Meanwhile, the structure of the macropores is suitable for the entry of large molecular dyes, and [GaW₁₂O₄₀]^5- also can achieve efficient adsorption for cationic dyes. The results displayed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and were well matched for MB adsorption onto Cu-GaW-TRZ. The free energy, entropy, and enthalpy of the thermodynamic parameters for the adsorption of MB were calculated, which revealed that the adsorption process was befitting for the adsorption of MB.

A series of novel Cu-based MOFs: syntheses, structural diversity, catalytic properties and mimic peroxidase activity for colorimetric detection of H2O2

Three MOFs with three different types of Cu clusters have been synthesized. MOFs 1–3 efficiently catalyze the oxidation of cycloalkanes under mild conditions. Besides, MOFs 1–3 exhibited high peroxidase-like activity and could be applied for colorimetric detection of H2O2.

Surfactant-assisted fabrication and supercapacitor performances of a 12-phosphomolybdate-pillared metal–organic framework containing a helix and its SWNT nanocomposites

By employing a surfactant-assisted hydrothermal method, a new POMOF with a multi-fold helix was obtained, and NiPMo12/SWNTs exhibits excellent electrochemical performance and good stability as an electrode material for supercapacitors.
