Metal-Free Decarboxylative Allylation of Oxime Esters under Light Irradiation

Allylation reactions, often used as a key step for constructing complex molecules and drug candidates, typically rely on transition-metal (TM) catalysts. Even though TM-free radical allylations have been developed using allyl-stannanes, -sulfides, -silanes or -sulfones, much less procedures have been reported using simple and commercially available allyl halides, that are used for the preparation of the before-mentioned allyl derivatives. Here, we present a straightforward photocatalytic protocol for the decarboxylative allylation of oxime esters using allyl bromide derivatives under metal-free and mild conditions. This methodology yields a diverse variety of functionalized molecules including several pharmaceutically relevant molecules.

A Dual Cobalt and Photoredox Catalysis for Hydrohalogenation of Alkenes

We demonstrate hydrohalogenation of aliphatic alkenes with collidine·HX salts through dual photoredox/cobalt catalysis. The dual catalysis enables conversion of a proton and a halide anion from collidine·HX salt to a nucleophilic hydrogen radical equivalent and an electrophilic halogen radical equivalent and delivery of them to an alkene moiety. This protocol allows for introduction of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine atom to alkene, producing highly functionalized alkyl halides.

Visible-light-induced halocyclization of 2-alkynylthioanisoles with simple alkyl halides towards 3-halobenzo[b]thiophenes without an external photocatalyst

A new strategy for the preparation of 3-halobenzo[b]thiophenes via a photo-driven halocyclization/demethylation of 2-alkynylthioanisoles with simple alkyl halides was developed. The reaction can proceed smoothly at room temperature under visible-light irradiation without any external photocatalyst, and the protocol has a range of advantages, including simplicity and mildness of the reaction conditions, good functional-group tolerance, and excellent yields of the products.

Sustainable Photoinduced Decarboxylative Chlorination Mediated by Halogen Atom Transfer

Chlorinated organic backbones constitute important components in existing biologically active chemicals, and they are extraordinary useful intermediates in organic synthesis. Herein, an operationally simple and sustainable halodecarboxylation protocol via halogen-atom transfer (XAT) as a key step is presented. The method merges a metal-free photoredox system with (diacetoxyiodo)benzene (PIDA) as a hypervalent iodine reagent using 1,2-dihaloethanes as halogen sources to afford haloalkanes in an efficient manner. The sustainability of this protocol is highlighted by an important waste recovery protocol as well as by atom economy and carbon efficiency parameters.
