Long-Wavelength Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells: Materials and Device Engineering

Unveiling the key role of metal coordination mode and ligand's side groups on the performance of deep-red light-emitting electrochemical cell

Three novel deep-red to near-infrared (DR to NIR) emitters based on mononuclear and dinuclear ruthenium(II) complexes with bulky structures were presented herein. For the first time, the unusual effects of metal coordination mode on the electroluminescence properties of a binuclear emitter were investigated. Unexpectedly, the mononuclear complexes showed superior performance in deep-red light-emitting electrochemical cells (DR-LEC) compared to the dinuclear complex. Likewise, substituting various ancillary ligands improved the radiance and lifetime of devices by 2.5 and 1.5 times, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the obtained efficiency is among the best reported to date for DR-LECs based on ruthenium polypyridyl complexes.

Development of Membrane-Targeting Fluorescent 2-Phenyl-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole-Antimicrobial Peptide Mimic Conjugates against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

The escalation of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections, especially infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), underscores the urgent need for novel antimicrobial drugs. Here, we synthesized a series of amphiphilic 2-phenyl-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole-antimicrobial peptide (AMP) mimic conjugates (III1-30). Among them, compound III13 exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against G+ bacteria and clinical MRSA isolates (MIC = 0.5-2 μg/mL), high membrane selectivity, and low toxicity. Additionally, compared with traditional clinical antibiotics, III13 demonstrated rapid bactericidal efficacy and was less susceptible to causing bacterial resistance. Mechanistic studies revealed that III13 targets phosphatidylglycerol (PG) on bacterial membranes to disrupt membrane integrity, leading to an increase in intracellular ROS and leakage of proteins and DNA, ultimately causing bacterial cell death. Furthermore, III13 possessed good fluorescence properties with potential for further dynamic monitoring of the antimicrobial process. Notably, III13 showed better in vivo efficacy against MRSA compared to vancomycin, suggesting its potential as a promising candidate for anti-MRSA medication.

A membrane-targeting magnolol derivative for the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections

Multidrug-resistant bacterial infections are a major global health challenge, especially the emergence and rapid spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) urgently require alternative treatment options. Our study has identified that a magnolol derivative 6i as a promising agent with significant antibacterial activity against S. aureus and clinical MRSA isolates (MIC = 2-8 μg/mL), showing high membrane selectivity. Unlike traditional antibiotics, 6i demonstrated rapid bactericidal efficiency and a lower propensity for inducing bacterial resistance. Compound 6i also could inhibit biofilm formation and eradicate bacteria within biofilms. Mechanistic studies further revealed that 6i could target bacterial cell membranes, disrupting the integrity of the cell membrane and leading to increased DNA leakage, resulting in potent antibacterial effects. Meanwhile, 6i also showed good plasma stability and excellent biosafety. Notably, 6i displayed good in vivo antibacterial activity in a mouse skin abscess model of MRSA-16 infection, which was comparable to the positive control vancomycin. These findings indicated that the magnolol derivative 6i possessed the potential to be a novel anti-MRSA infection agent.

Pyrazolate-Bridged NHC Cyclometalated [Pt2] Complexes and [Pt2Ag(PPh3)]+ Clusters in Electroluminescent Devices

The ionic transition metal complexes (iTMCs) [{Pt(C∧C*)(μ-Rpz)}2Ag(PPh3)]X (HC∧C* = 1-(4-(ethoxycarbonyl)phenyl)-3-methyl-1H-imidazole-2-ylidene, X = ClO4/PF6; Rpz = pz 1a/2a, 4-Mepz 1b/2b, and 3,5-dppz 1c/2c) were prepared from the neutral [{Pt(C∧C*)(μ-Rpz)}2] (Rpz = pz A, 4-Mepz B, and 3,5-dppz C) and fully characterized. The "Ag(PPh3)" fragment is in between the two square-planar platinum units in an "open book" disposition and bonded through two Pt-Ag donor-acceptor bonds, as shown by X-ray diffraction (dPt-Ag ∼ 2.78 Å, 1a-1c). 195Pt{1H} and 31P{1H} NMR confirmed that these solid-state structures remain in solution. Photoluminescence studies and theoretical calculations on 1a, were performed. The diphenylpyrazolate derivatives show the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in the solid state. Therefore, 2c and its neutral precursor C were selected as active materials on light-emitting devices. OLEDs fabricated with C showed a turn-on voltage of 3.2 V, a luminance peak of 21,357 cd m-2 at 13 V, and a peak current efficiency of 28.8 cd A-1 (9.5% EQE). They showed a lifetime t50 of 15.7 h. OLEDs using 2c showed a maximum luminance of 114 cd m-2, while LECs exhibited a maximum luminance of 20 cd m-2 and a current efficiency of around 0.2 cd A-1, with a t50 value of 50 min.

Machine Learning Prediction of Quantum Yields and Wavelengths of Aggregation-Induced Emission Molecules

The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect exhibits a significant influence on the development of luminescent materials and has made remarkable progress over the past decades. The advancement of high-performance AIE materials requires fast and accurate predictions of their photophysical properties, which is impeded by the inherent limitations of quantum chemical calculations. In this work, we present an accurate machine learning approach for the fast predictions of quantum yields and wavelengths to screen out AIE molecules. A database of about 563 organic luminescent molecules with quantum yields and wavelengths in the monomeric/aggregated states was established. Individual/combined molecular fingerprints were selected and compared elaborately to attain appropriate molecular descriptors. Different machine learning algorithms combined with favorable molecular fingerprints were further screened to achieve more accurate prediction models. The simulation results indicate that combined molecular fingerprints yield more accurate predictions in the aggregated states, and random forest and gradient boosting regression algorithms show the best predictions in quantum yields and wavelengths, respectively. Given the successful applications of machine learning in quantum yields and wavelengths, it is reasonable to anticipate that machine learning can serve as a complementary strategy to traditional experimental/theoretical methods in the investigation of aggregation-induced luminescent molecules to facilitate the discovery of luminescent materials.

Cationic Ir(III) Complexes with 4-Fluoro-4'-pyrazolyl-(1,1'-biphenyl)-2-carbonitrile as the Cyclometalating Ligand: Synthesis, Characterizations, and Application to Ultrahigh-Efficiency Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells

Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) promise low-cost, large-area luminescence applications with air-stabilized electrodes and a versatile fabrication that enables the use of solution processes. Nevertheless, the commercialization of LECs is still encountering many obstacles, such as low electroluminescence (EL) efficiencies of the ionic materials. In this paper, we propose five blue to yellow ionic Ir complexes possessing 4-fluoro-4'-pyrazolyl-(1,1'-biphenyl)-2-carbonitrile (ppfn) as a novel cyclometalating ligand and use them in LECs. In particular, the device within di[4-fluoro-4'-pyrazolyl-(1,1'-biphenyl)-2-carbonitrile]-4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridyl iridium(III) hexafluorophosphate (DTBP) shows a remarkable photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 70%, and by adjusting the emissive-layer thickness, the maximal external quantum efficiency (EQE) reaches 22.15% at 532 nm under the thickness of 0.51 μm, showing the state-of-the-art value for the reported blue-green LECs.

Recent advances of organic emitters in deep-red light-emitting electrochemical cells

Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) are kind of easily fabricated and low-cost light-emitting devices that can efficiently convert electric power to light energy. Compared with blue and green LECs, the performance of deep-red LECs is limited by the high non-radiative rate of emitters in long-wavelength region. While various organic emitters with deep-red emission have been developed to construct high-performance LECs, including polymers, metal complexes, and organic luminous molecules (OLMs), but this is seldom summarized. Therefore, we overview the recent advances of organic emitters with emission at the deep-red region for LECs, and specifically highlight the molecular design approach and electrochemiluminescence performance. We hope that this review can act as a reference for further research in designing high-performance deep-red LECs.

Phenanthroimidazole as molecularly engineered switch for efficient and highly long-lived light-emitting electrochemical cell

Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) based on Ir(III) complexes owing to the superior advantages exhibit high potential for display and lighting applications. Herein, a series of Ir(III) complexes based on phenanthroimidazole (PI) as an ancillary ligand were synthesized to achieve efficient and highly stable yellow-to-orange LEC devices with fast response. These complexes exhibit appropriate electrochemical stability and significant suppression of concentration quenching in the thin films compared to the archetype complex. The fabricated LECs showed remarkably long device lifetimes over 1400 and 2100 h and external quantum efficiency of 2 and 3% for yellow and orange-LECs, respectively. The obtained t_1/2 for yellow LEC is much higher than archetype [Ir(ppy)₂(phen)]⁺ and their phenanthroline-based analogues reported so far. The incorporation of an ionic tethered functional group on PI, improved the mobility of the emissive layer and reduced the device turn-on time by 75-88%. This study shows a facile functionalization and characterization of the PI ligand as well as its potential application in optoelectronic devices (OLED).
