Abstract
This review presents representative examples illustrating how the Lewis acidic character of the Zn(II) metal center in Zn(salen)-type complexes, as well as in complexes of other tetradentate ligands, and the nature of the medium govern their supramolecular aggregation, leading to the formation of a variety of supramolecular structures, either in solution or in the solid state. Stabilization of these Lewis acidic complexes is almost always reached through an axial coordination of a Lewis base, leading to a penta-coordinated square-pyramidal geometry around the metal center. The coverage is not exhaustive, mainly focused on their crystallographic structures, but also on their aggregation and sensing properties in solution, and on their self-assembled and responsive nanostructures, summarizing their salient aspects. The axial ligands can easily be displaced, either in solution or in the solid state, with suitable Lewis bases, thus being responsive supramolecular structures useful for sensing. This contribution represents the first attempt to relate some common features of the chemistry of different families of Zn(II) complexes of tetradentate ligands to their intrinsic Lewis acidic character.

Abstract
Zn-salophen complexes are a promising class of fluorescent chemosensors for nucleotides and nucleic acids. We have investigated, by means of steady state UV-Vis, ultrafast transient absorption, fluorescence emission and time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) the behavior of the excited states of a salicylidene tetradentate Schiff base (Sal), its Zn(II) coordination compound (Zn-Sal) and the effect of the interaction between Zn-Sal and adenosine diphosphate (ADP). TD-DFT shows that the deactivation of the excited state of Sal occurs through torsional motion, due to its rotatable bonds and twistable angles. Complexation with Zn(II) causes rigidity so that the geometry changes in the excited states with respect to the ground state structure are minimal. By addition of ADP to a freshly prepared Zn-Sal ethanol solution, a longer relaxation constant, in comparison to Zn-Sal, was measured, indicative of the interaction between Zn-Sal and ADP. After a few days, the Zn-Sal-ADP solution displayed the same static and dynamic behavior of a solution containing only the Sal ligand, demonstrating that the coordination of the ADP anion to Zn(II)leads to the demetallation of the Sal ligand. Fluorescence measurements also revealed an enhanced fluorescence at 375 nm following the addition of ADP to the solution, caused by the presence of 2,3-diamino naphthalene that is formed by demetallation and partial decomposition of the Sal ligand. The efficient fluorescence of this species at 375 nm could be selectively detected and used as a probe for the detection of ADP in solution.

Abstract
A novel water-soluble uranyl-salophen (salophen=N,N'-disalicylidene-o-phenylenediaminate) complex was obtained. Solubility was achieved in aqueous methyl-β-cyclodextrin solutions, taking advantage of the host-guest interactions established with the adamantyl moieties present on the ligand skeleton. Such an approach facilitates the synthesis of the receptor and the purification processes and, in perspective, can be definitely applicable to other molecular scaffolds. UV/Vis titration experiments demonstrate that the capacity of the uranyl-salophen core to behave as a receptor for anions is retained in water and appears comparable with that previously reported for other water-soluble uranyl-salophen systems. Hence the presence of cyclodextrins does not interfere with molecular recognition processes.

Abstract
In this frontier article some peculiar characteristics of Zn(salen)-type Schiff-base complexes are reviewed. The paper is mainly focused on the most recent and relevant achievements on responsive supramolecular nanostructures and sensing properties, both of them related to the Lewis acidic character of the ZnII centre in these molecular species, providing an interpretation of these features. The sensing properties of Zn(salen)-type complexes mainly originate from optical spectroscopic changes associated with the formation of the adducts upon addition of a Lewis base (analyte), either by deaggregation of dimeric species or displacement of the solvent coordinated to the metal centre. In both cases the direct sensing is related either to the Lewis acidic character of the complex as well as to the Lewis basicity of the analyte. The formation of responsive nanostructures with fluorescent, and/or vapochromic, mechanochromic, and thermochromic characteristics is driven by non-mutual intermolecular ZnO interactions, further stabilized by π-π stacking interactions and/or interdigitation of the alkyl side groups. The Lewis acidic character is not a prerogative of Zn(salen)-type complexes of tetradentate Schiff-bases. Many other classes of ZnII complexes can possess this property. A correct interpretation of their chemistry is certainly useful for further development of these classical coordination compounds as new molecular materials.

Abstract
In this contribution, the synthesis and the unusual aggregation/deaggregation properties in solution of two dinuclear ZnII Schiff-base complexes of tetradentate Schiff-base units, having non-conjugated spacers between each molecular unit, are reported in comparison to the mononuclear model complex. Through detailed 1H NMR, DOSY NMR, optical absorption, fluorescence emission, and multivariate analysis of optical absorption data, emerge some interesting findings. In solution of non-coordinating solvents, these Lewis acidic species are characterized as monomers stabilized by formation of intramolecular aggregates, having distinct spectroscopic properties in comparison to intermolecular aggregates derived from the mononuclear model analogue. Instead, in coordinating solvents they exhibit a typical behaviour, with formation of stable adducts showing a strong fluorescence. Deaggregation studies using pyridine as reference Lewis base allowed establishing a larger thermodynamic stability of these intramolecular aggregates, in comparison to intermolecular aggregates, even larger than that of aggregates of conjugated multinuclear complexes. The combined analysis of spectroscopic data upon deaggregation with ditopic Lewis bases unambiguously demonstrated the formation of stable 1 : 1 adducts, with higher binding constants in comparison to those related to monotopic species. Therefore, the present Lewis acidic, dinuclear complexes behave as molecular tweezers of ditopic guests having a strong Lewis basicity.

Abstract
The zinc(II) ion forms stable complexes with a wide variety of ligands, but those related to Schiff-bases are among the most largely investigated. This review deals with the peculiar aggregation characteristics of Zn(II) Schiff-base complexes from tetradentate N2O2 salen-type ligands, L, derivatives from salicylaldehydes and 1,2-diamines, and is mostly focused on their spectroscopic properties in solution. Thanks to their Lewis acidic character, ZnL complexes show interesting structural, nanostructural, and aggregation/deaggregation properties in relation to the absence/presence of a Lewis base. Deaggregation of these complexes is accompanied by relevant changes of their spectroscopic properties that can appropriately be exploited for sensing Lewis bases. Thus, ZnL complexes have been investigated as chromogenic and fluorogenic chemosensors of charged and neutral Lewis bases, including cell imaging, and have shown to be selective and sensitive to the Lewis basicity of the involved species. From these studies emerges that these popular, Lewis acidic bis(salicylaldiminato)Zn(II) Schiff-base complexes represent classical coordination compounds for modern applications.

Abstract
A number of salophen ligands and their Zn, Ni, and Pd complexes were synthesized by an efficient one-pot mechanosynthesis protocol. The reaction products were characterized by means of complementary solid-state techniques, i.e., powder X-ray diffraction, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Four new crystal structures of metal salophen complexes as DMSO solvates are here reported. The described simple and relatively fast (about 1 h for all derivatives) procedure is a good alternative to classical methods performed in organic solvents.

Abstract
In this contribution is reported the synthesis, characterization, and aggregation properties in solution of a novel Zn(II) complex, (R)-2, derived from the enantiopure chiral trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane and a substituted salicylaldehyde. Detailed 1H NMR, DOSY NMR, optical absorption, and circular dichroism spectroscopic studies and chemical evidence allowed to investigate the nature of aggregate species in solution. The high solubility of (R)-2 in solution of the non-coordinating chloroform solvent leads to formation of various aggregates, some of them consisting of large oligomers estimated to contain up to 27 monomeric units. The chiral trans-stereochemistry of the bridging diamine favors a different aggregation mode in these complexes, both in the oligomers and dimers, involving a tetrahedral coordination geometry around the metal center. Overall data suggest the formation of helical oligomers, (ZnL)n, in freshly prepared chloroform solutions which, by standing or heating, evolve towards a more thermodynamically stable, dinuclear double-helicate Zn2L2 dimer.

Abstract
Novel chiral porphyrin ligands were synthesized from four different chiral aldehydes. In situ transition metal complexes of these novel chiral porphyrin ligands were found to catalyze asymmetric epoxidation reaction of styrene possessing various substituents. The chiral epoxides were formed in excellent yield and ee.

Abstract
Unravelling the unique effects of metal coordination on biological behaviours is of importance to design metal based therapeutic and diagnostic agents. In this work, we chose luminescent Znsalen (ZnL1 ) as a case study to demonstrate that metal induced aggregation arising from the intermolecular Zn···O interaction influences its cellular uptake and subcellular localization. Comparative studies with the free bases (L1 and L2 ) show that ZnL1 undergoes cellular uptake through caveolae-mediated endocytosis and internalizes in endosomal/lysosomal compartments, in contrast to the localization of L1 and L2 in the mitochondria. Further studies of photophysical properties, TEM imaging and DLS analysis suggest that ZnL1 tends to form large sized fibrous structures in aqueous media. To investigate the relationship between ZnL1 aggregation and the biological behaviour, we used pyridine to tune the "aggregation-to-deaggregation" transition and found that, in the presence of pyridine, ZnL1 could localize in the mitochondria and internalize into cells through the passive diffusion pathway. Such distinctive biological behaviours resulting from the different Znsalen species clearly point out the importance of metal induced aggregation or metal speciation analysis in designing metal complexes as biological probes.

Abstract
Recognition of inorganic phosphates PO(4)(3-), P(2)O(7)(4-), and P(3)O(10)(5-) and nucleotides AMP(2-), ADP(3-), and ATP(4-) by Zn(2+)-salophen complexes 1 and 2 in ethanol was investigated by different spectroscopic techniques. (31)P NMR and mass spectrometry showed that anions of both series are bound by 1 and 2, while absorption and emission studies revealed that only nucleotides produce relevant changes in the spectral properties of the two hosts. (1)H NMR studies proved that the adenine aromatic group is involved in the complexation, thus pointing out the role of supramolecular ditopic receptors played by salophen derivatives toward this class of biologically relevant substrates. The lifetime of the photogenerated triplet state of the Zn(2+)-salophen compounds was measured by nanosecond laser flash photolysis, and the observed changes upon increasing the concentration of nucleotides allowed the identification of the formation of a 1:0.5 host/guest intermediate complex additionally to the formation of a 1:1 complex.

Abstract
Ammonium ions are ubiquitous in chemistry and molecular biology. Considerable efforts have been undertaken to develop synthetic receptors for their selective molecular recognition. The type of host compounds for organic ammonium ion binding span a wide range from crown ethers to calixarenes to metal complexes. Typical intermolecular interactions are hydrogen bonds, electrostatic and cation-π interactions, hydrophobic interactions or reversible covalent bond formation. In this review we discuss the different classes of synthetic receptors for organic ammonium ion recognition and illustrate the scope and limitations of each class with selected examples from the recent literature. The molecular recognition of ammonium ions in amino acids is included and the enantioselective binding of chiral ammonium ions by synthetic receptors is also covered. In our conclusion we compare the strengths and weaknesses of the different types of ammonium ion receptors which may help to select the best approach for specific applications.
