Abstract
Generally, the relationship between the observed circular dichroism and the enantiomeric excess in chiral systems (CD-ee dependence) is linear. While positive nonlinear behavior has often been reported in the past, examples of negative nonlinear (NN) behavior in CD-ee dependence are rare and not well understood. Here, we present a strong NN CD-ee dependence within polycrystalline thin films of BINOL by using second-harmonic-generation circular dichroism (SHG-CD) and commercial CD spectroscopy studies. Theoretical calculations, microscopy, and FTIR studies are employed to further clarify the underlying cause of this observation. This behavior is attributed to the changing supramolecular chirality of the system. Systems exhibiting NN CD-ee dependence hold promise for highly accurate enantiomeric excess characterization, which is essential for the refinement of enantio-separating and -purifying processes in pharmaceuticals, asymmetric catalysis, and chiral sensing. Our findings suggest that a whole class of single-species systems, i.e., racemate crystals, might possess NN CD-ee dependence and thus provide us a vast playground to better understand and exploit this phenomenon.

Abstract
Solid-state ECD (ss-ECD) spectra of a model microcrystalline solid, finasteride, dispersed into a KCl pellet were recorded by using the synchrotron radiation source at the Diamond B23 beamline. Scanning a surface of 36 mm2 with a step of 0.5 mm, we measured a set of ECD imaging (ECDi) spectra very different from each other and from the ss-ECD recorded with a bench-top instrument (1 cm2 area). This is due to the anisotropic part of the ECD (ACD), which averages to zero in solution or on a large number of randomly oriented crystallites, but can otherwise be extremely large. Two-way singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis, through experimental and simulated TDDFT spectra, disclosed that the measured and theoretical principal components are in line with each other. This finding demonstrates that the observed isotropic ss-ECD spectrum is governed by the anisotropy of locally oriented crystals. It also introduces a new quality for ss-ECD measurements and opens a new future for probing and mapping chiral materials in the solid state such as active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

Abstract
The application of the exciton chirality method (ECM) to interpret electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra is a well‐established and still popular approach to assign the absolute configuration (AC) of natural products, chiral organic compounds, and organometallic species. The method applies to compounds containing at least two chromophores with electric dipole allowed transitions (e.g., π–π* transitions). The exciton chirality rule correlates the sign of an exciton couplet (two ECD bands with opposite sign and similar intensity) with the overall molecular stereochemistry, including the AC. A correct application of the ECM requires three main prerequisites: (a) the knowledge of the molecular conformation, (b) the knowledge of the directions of the electric transition moments (TDMs), and (c) the assumption that the exciton coupling mechanism must be the major source of the observed ECD signals. All these prerequisites can be easily verified by means of quantum‐mechanical (QM) calculations. In the present review, we shortly introduce the general principles that underpin the use of the ECM for configurational assignments and survey its applications, both classic ones and some reported in the recent literature. Based on these examples, we will stress the advantages of the ECM but also the key requisites for its correct application. Additionally, we will discuss the dependence of the couplet sign on geometrical parameters (angles α,β,γ between TDMs), which can be helpful for discerning the sign of exciton chirality in ambiguous situations. Finally, we will present a molecular orbital (MO) description of the exciton coupling phenomenon.

Abstract
We demonstrated the hitherto unknown property of the mycotoxin sterigmatocystin (STC) to provide homogeneous solutions in aqueous medium by forming a unique aggregate type (not formed by analogous aflatoxins), characterized by exceptionally strong circular dichroism (CD) bands in the 300-400 nm range. Results showed that these CD bands do not originate from intrinsic STC chirality but are a specific property of a peculiar aggregation process similar to psi-DNA CD response. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments revealed a fine fiber network resembling a supramolecular gel structure with helical fibers. Thermodynamic studies of aggregates by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed high reversibility of the dominant aggregation process. We demonstrated that the novel STC psi-CD band at 345 nm could be applied at biorelevant conditions (100 nanomolar concentration) and even in marine-salt content conditions for specific and quantitative monitoring of STC. Also, we showed that STC strongly non-covalently interacts with ds-DNA with likely toxic effects, thus contrary to the previous belief requiring prior enzyme epoxidation.

Abstract
A strain of the pathogenic fungus Ascochyta lentis isolated from lentil ( Lens culinaris) was studied to ascertain its capability to produce bioactive metabolites. From the culture filtrates were found three new anthraquinone derivatives, named lentiquinones A (1), B (2), and C (3), and the known lentisone. From the mycelium, four known analogues were identified, namely pachybasin (in larger amount), ω-hydroxypachybasin, 1,7-dihydroxy-3-methylanthracene-9,10-dione, and phomarin. Lentiquinones A-C were characterized by spectroscopic methods as 3,4,6-trihydroxy-8-methyl-2 H-benzo[ g]chromene-5,10-dione, 2,3,4,5,10-pentahydroxy-7-methyl-3,4,4a,10-tetrahydroanthracen-9(2 H)-one, and its 2-epimer, respectively, and the relative configuration of the two latter compounds was deduced by X-ray diffraction data analysis. The absolute configuration of lentiquinones B and C was determined as (2 R,3 S,4 S,4a S,10 R) and (2 S,3 S,4 S,4a S,10 R), respectively, by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) in solution and solid state, and TDDFT calculations. When tested by using different bioassays, the novel compounds showed interesting activities. In particular, applied to punctured leaves of host and nonhost plants, the three new compounds and lentisone caused severe necrosis, with lentiquinone A being the most active among the new metabolites. On cress ( Lepidium sativum), this latter compound proved to be particularly active in inhibiting root elongation. On Lemna minor all the compounds reduced the content of chlorophyll, with 1,7-dihyroxy-3-methylanthracene-9,10-dione being the most active. The new compounds, together with lentisone, proved to have antibiotic properties.

Abstract
A zinc trisporphyrinate has been developed as a chirality sensor for chiral mono-alcohols. In its structure, there are two "spaces" surrounded by three porphyrin moieties, which allow guests to fill in. It has shown extremely high CD sensitivity for a chiral mono-alcohol with a naphthyl substituent, 1-(1-naphthyl)ethanol, at μM level, which is at least three orders of magnitude lower concentration than previous reports. A crystallographic study of the host-guest complex reveals the binding of 1-(1-naphthyl)ethanol to the zinc trisporphyrinate is greatly enhanced by multipoint interactions, such as coordination interactions, hydrogen bonding, π-π and CH···π interactions etc. Spectroscopic studies suggest the corresponding binding constant K1 is over 105 M-1, which is two or three orders of magnitude larger than other mono-alcohols. Among porphyrin systems, this trisporphyrin have the strongest binding affinity for 1-(1-naphthyl)ethanol, which leads to the highest CD sensitivity.

Abstract
Two new diterpenoid α-pyrones, named higginsianins A (1) and B (2), were isolated from the mycelium of the fungus Colletotrichum higginsianum grown in liquid culture. They were characterized as 3-[5a,9b-dimethyl-7-methylene-2-(2-methylpropenyl)dodecahydronaphtho[2,1-b]furan-6-ylmethyl]-4-hydroxy-5,6-dimethylpyran-2-one and 4-hydroxy-3-[6-hydroxy-5,8a-dimethyl-2-methylene-5-(4-methylpent-3-enyl)decahydronaphthalen-1-ylmethyl]-5,6-dimethylpyran-2-one, respectively, by using NMR, HRESIMS, and chemical methods. The structure and relative configuration of higginsianin A (1) were confirmed by X-ray diffractometric analysis, while its absolute configuration was assigned by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) experiments and calculations using a solid-state ECD/TDDFT method. The relative and absolute configuration of higginsianin B (2), which did not afford crystals suitable for X-ray analysis, were determined by NMR analysis and by ECD in comparison with higginsianin A. 1 and 2 were the C-8 epimers of subglutinol A and diterpenoid BR-050, respectively. The evaluation of 1 and 2 for antiproliferative activity against a panel of six cancer cell lines revealed that the IC50 values, obtained with cells reported to be sensitive to pro-apoptotic stimuli, are by more than 1 order of magnitude lower than their apoptosis-resistant counterparts (1 vs >80 μM). Finally, three hemisynthetic derivatives of 1 were prepared and evaluated for antiproliferative activity. Abstract
Aggregates of chiral polythiophenes (PTs) show exciton-coupled electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra with a unique vibronic structure, which can be reproduced by quantum dynamical simulations on the coupled states of small dimeric models.

Abstract
A successful elucidation of the near-ultraviolet electronic circular dichroism spectrum of a short double-stranded DNA is reported. Time-dependent density functional theory methods are shown to accurately predict spectra and assign bands on the microscopic base-pair scale, a finding that opens the field for using circular dichroism spectroscopy as a sensitive nanoscale probe of DNA to reveal its complex interactions with the environment.
