Chiroptical Properties in Thin Films of π-Conjugated Systems

Chiral π-conjugated molecules provide new materials with outstanding features for current and perspective applications, especially in the field of optoelectronic devices. In thin films, processes such as charge conduction, light absorption, and emission are governed not only by the structure of the individual molecules but also by their supramolecular structures and intermolecular interactions to a large extent. Electronic circular dichroism, ECD, and its emission counterpart, circularly polarized luminescence, CPL, provide tools for studying aggregated states and the key properties to be sought for designing innovative devices. In this review, we shall present a comprehensive coverage of chiroptical properties measured on thin films of organic π-conjugated molecules. In the first part, we shall discuss some general concepts of ECD, CPL, and other chiroptical spectroscopies, with a focus on their applications to thin film samples. In the following, we will overview the existing literature on chiral π-conjugated systems whose thin films have been characterized by ECD and/or CPL, as well other chiroptical spectroscopies. Special emphasis will be put on systems with large dissymmetry factors (g_abs and g_lum) and on the application of ECD and CPL to derive structural information on aggregated states.

Multi-stimuli-responsiveness of a novel polydiacetylene-based supramolecular gel

Herein, a novel supramolecular gel was fabricated through the bi-component co-assembly strategy of commercially available 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (PCDA) and laboratory-synthesized amphiphilic co-gelator N-(2-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)ethyl)stearamide (IMSA), which contains one imidazole head group and a long alkyl chain tail, by synergetic noncovalent interactions. Upon irradiation of normal 254 nm UV light, blue polydiacetylene (PDA) could be obtained by topo-polymerization of the PCDA monomers in the gel phase. This PDA-based supramolecular gel is able to respond to various environmental stimuli and shows a blue-to-red chromatic transition, which could be observed by the naked eye. Specifically, upon exposure to heat, pH, metal cation and organic solvent stimuli, the PDA gel displays thermochromism, halochromism, ionochromism and solvatochromism, respectively. More interestingly, the differences of the above-mentioned stimuli-induced color transition of the blue PDA supramolecular gels could be characterized by UV-Vis absorption spectra and Raman spectra, therefore illuminating a bright application prospect in the area of chemosensing.

Fabrication of Supramolecular Chirality from Achiral Molecules at the Liquid/Liquid Interface Studied by Second Harmonic Generation

We present the investigation into the supramolecular chirality of 5-octadecyloxy-2-(2-pyridylazo)phenol (PARC18) at water/1,2-dichloroethane interface by second harmonic generation (SHG). We observe that PARC18 molecules form supramolecular chirality through self-assembly at the liquid/liquid interface although they are achiral molecules. The bulk concentration of PARC18 in the organic phase has profound effects on the supramolecular chirality. By increasing bulk concentration, the enantiomeric excess at the interface first grows and then decreases until it eventually vanishes. Further analysis reveals that the enantiomeric excess is determined by the twist angle of PARC18 molecules at the interface rather than their orientational angle. At lower and higher bulk concentrations, the average twist angle of PARC18 molecules approaches zero, and the assemblies are achiral; whereas at medium bulk concentrations, the average twist angle is nonzero, so that the assemblies show supramolecular chirality. We also estimate the coverage of PARC18 molecules at the interface versus the bulk concentration and fit it to Langmuir adsorption model. The result indicates that PARC18 assemblies show strongest supramolecular chirality in a half-full monolayer. These findings highlight the opportunities for precise control of supramolecular chirality at liquid/liquid interfaces by manipulating the bulk concentration.

Fabrication of Helical Nanoribbon Polydiacetylene via Supramolecular Gelation: Circularly Polarized Luminescence and Novel Diagnostic Chiroptical Signals for Sensing

Four kinds of commercially available diacetylene (DA) monomers with different chain length, diacetylene positions were fabricated into the organogels via mixing with a chaperone gelator, an amphiphilic l-histidine ester derivative LHC18 that can help the nongelator to form gels. Upon photo irradiation with a 254 nm UV light, the white gels underwent topochemical reaction and turned into red or blue gels, depending on the DA monomer structures. Through the gel formation, the molecular chirality of LHC18 can be transferred to the polydiacetylene (PDA) and helical nanoribbon structures were obtained. The blue gels showed a clear response to stimuli such as pH variation, heating, mechanical force and organic solvents, and turned into red gels. Interestingly, the blue gel showed strong supramolecular chirality, which could be turned off or changed into red phase CD signals. Such changes in chiroptical signals depended on the external heating and various organic solvents. In the case of heating, the blue gel changed into red one, which showed both strong CD signals and circularly polarized luminescence. In the case of organic solvents, although all the tested solvents made the blue gel to red, only some of them could keep the CD signals, thus providing additional sensing capacity of the PDA system. So far, the blue-to-red color change and the "fluorescence on" was widely used as colorimetric and fluorogenic diagnostic signals for PDA, here we showed an additional chiroptical diagnostic signal for a more precise sensing by using the helical PDA.
