Recovery of 2,3-Butanediol from Fermentation Broth by Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks

The efficient separation of the 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) intermediate from fermentation broth is an important issue in the production of biofuels from biomass-derived intermediates. Two zeolitic imidazolate frameworks ZIF-8 and ZIF-71 were investigated for the adsorption of 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) from fermentation broth via liquid breakthrough adsorption measurements. While both ZIF materials initially show high separation performance, ZIF-71 retains robust separation performance even after aging in ethanol for two years, whereas the capacity of ZIF-8 decreases significantly. The robustness and stability of ZIF-71 are further confirmed with cyclic fixed bed adsorption measurements. The uptake of 2,3-BDO on ZIF-71 reaches >100 g/kg with negligible uptakes of sugars, organic acids, and other alcohols present in the fermentation broth. Excellent selectivity toward 2,3-BDO over water is also achieved. The 2,3-BDO-loaded ZIF-71 can be regenerated efficiently with ethanol as desorbent. These findings indicate that ZIF-71 shows considerable promise as an adsorbent to recover and purify diols from fermentation broths.

Designing the bioproduction of Martian rocket propellant via a biotechnology-enabled in situ resource utilization strategy

Mars colonization demands technological advances to enable the return of humans to Earth. Shipping the propellant and oxygen for a return journey is not viable. Considering the gravitational and atmospheric differences between Mars and Earth, we propose bioproduction of a Mars-specific rocket propellant, 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO), from CO₂, sunlight and water on Mars via a biotechnology-enabled in situ resource utilization (bio-ISRU) strategy. Photosynthetic cyanobacteria convert Martian CO₂ into sugars that are upgraded by engineered Escherichia coli into 2,3-BDO. A state-of-the-art bio-ISRU for 2,3-BDO production uses 32% less power and requires a 2.8-fold higher payload mass than proposed chemical ISRU strategies, and generates 44 tons of excess oxygen to support colonization. Attainable, model-guided biological and materials optimizations result in an optimized bio-ISRU that uses 59% less power and has a 13% lower payload mass, while still generating 20 tons excess oxygen. Addressing the identified challenges will advance prospects for interplanetary space travel.

Returning from Mars to Earth requires propellant. The authors propose a biotechnology-enabled in situ resource utilization (bioISRU) process to produce a Mars specific rocket propellant, 2,3-butanediol, using cyanobacteria and engineered E. coli, with lower payload mass and energy usage compared to chemical ISRU strategies.

Systems level roadmap for solvent recovery and reuse in industries

Recovering waste solvent for reuse presents an excellent alternative to improving the greenness of industrial processes. Implementing solvent recovery practices in the chemical industry is necessary, given the increasing focus on sustainability to promote a circular economy. However, the systematic design of recovery processes is a daunting task due to the complexities associated with waste stream composition, techno-economic analysis, and environmental assessment. Furthermore, the challenges to satisfy the desired product specifications, particularly in pharmaceuticals and specialty chemical industries, may also deter solvent recovery and reuse practices. To this end, this review presents a systems-level approach including various methodologies that can be implemented to design and evaluate efficient solvent recovery pathways.

Simultaneous production of poly-γ-glutamic acid and 2,3-butanediol by a newly isolated Bacillus subtilis CS13

Bacillus subtilis naturally produces large amounts of 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BD) as a main by-product during poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) production. 2,3-BD is a promising platform chemical in various industries, and co-production of the two chemicals has great economic benefits. Co-production of γ-PGA and 2,3-BD by a newly isolated B. subtilis CS13 was investigated here. The fermentation medium and culture parameters of the process were optimized using statistical methods. It was observed that sucrose, L-glutamic acid, ammonium citrate, and MgSO₄·7H₂O were favorable for γ-PGA and 2,3-BD co-production at culture pH of 6.5 and 37 °C. An optimal medium composed of 119.8 g/L sucrose, 48.8 g/L L-glutamic acid, 21.1 g/L ammonium citrate, and 3.2 g/L MgSO₄·7H₂O was obtained by response surface methodology (RSM). The results show that the titers of γ-PGA and 2,3-BD reached 27.8 ± 0.9 g/L at 24 h and 57.1 ± 1.3 g/L at 84 h with the optimized medium, respectively. γ-PGA and 2,3-BD production by B. subtilis CS13 was significantly enhanced in fed-batch fermentations. γ-PGA (36.5 ± 1.1 g/L, productivity of 1.22 ± 0.04 g/L/h) and 2,3-BD concentrations (119.6 ± 2.8 g/L, productivity of 2.49 ± 0.66 g/L/h) were obtained in the optimized medium with feeding sucrose. The co-production of 2,3-BD and γ-PGA provides a new perspective for industrial production of γ-PGA and 2,3-BD. Key points • A strategy for co-production of γ-PGA and 2,3-BD was developed. • The culture parameters for the co-production of γ-PGA and 2,3-BD were studied. • RSM was used to optimize the medium for γ-PGA and 2,3-BD co-production. • 36.5 g/L γ-PGA and 119.6 g/L 2,3-BD were obtained from the optimum medium in fed-batch fermentation.

Study of Hybrid PVA/MA/TEOS Pervaporation Membrane and Evaluation of Energy Requirement for Desalination by Pervaporation

Desalination by pervaporation is a membrane process that is yet to be realized for commercial application. To investigate the feasibility and viability of scaling up, a process engineering model was developed to evaluate the energy requirement based on the experimental study of a hybrid polyvinyl alcohol/maleic acid/tetraethyl orthosilicate (PVA/MA/TEOS) Pervaporation Membrane. The energy consumption includes the external heating and cooling required for the feed and permeate streams, as well as the electrical power associated with pumps for re-circulating feed and maintaining vacuum. The thermal energy requirement is significant (e.g., up to 2609 MJ/m³ of thermal energy) and is required to maintain the feed stream at 65 °C in recirculation mode. The electrical energy requirement is very small (<0.2 kWh/m³ of required at 65 °C feed temperature at steady state) with the vacuum pump contributing to the majority of the electrical energy. The energy required for the pervaporation process was also compared to other desalination processes such as Reverse Osmosis (RO), Multi-stage Flash (MSF), and Multiple Effect Distillation (MED). The electrical energy requirement for pervaporation is the lowest among these desalination technologies. However, the thermal energy needed for pervaporation is significant. Pervaporation may be attractive when the process is integrated with waste heat and heat recovery option and used in niche applications such as RO brine concentration or salt recovery.

Microbial production of short chain diols

Short chain diols (propanediols, butanediols, pentanediols) have been widely used in bulk and fine chemical industries as fuels, solvents, polymer monomers and pharmaceutical precursors. The chemical production of short chain diols from fossil resources has been developed and optimized for decades. Consideration of the exhausting fossil resources and the increasing environment issues, the bio-based process to produce short chain diols is attracting interests. Currently, a variety of biotechnologies have been developed for the microbial production of the short chain diols from renewable feed-stocks. In order to efficiently produce bio-diols, the techniques like metabolically engineering the production strains, optimization of the fermentation processes, and integration of a reasonable downstream recovery processes have been thoroughly investigated. In this review, we summarized the recent development in the whole process of bio-diols production including substrate, microorganism, metabolic pathway, fermentation process and downstream process.
