Treatment of the real boiler cleaning wastewater in an anaerobic fluidized bed microbial fuel cell: Organic matter degradation, bioelectrochemistry, and kinetics

Treatment of phenolic wastewater by anaerobic fluidized bed microbial fuel cell using carbon brush as anode: microbial community analysis and m-cresol degradation mechanism

Anaerobic fluidized bed microbial fuel cell (AFB-MFC) is a technology that combines fluidized bed reactor and microbial fuel cell to treat organic wastewater and generate electricity. The performance and the mechanism of treating m-cresol wastewater in AFB-MFC using carbon brush as biofilm anode were studied. After 48 h of operation, the m-cresol removal efficiency of AFB-MFC, MAR-AFB (fluidized bed bioreactor with acclimated anaerobic sludge), MAR-FB (ordinary fluidized bed reactor with only macroporous adsorptive resin) and AST (traditional anaerobic sludge treatment) were 95.29 ± 0.67%, 85.78 ± 1.81%, 71.24 ± 1.86% and 70.41 ± 0.32% respectively. The maximum output voltage and the maximum power density of AFB-MFC using carbon brush as biofilm anode were 679.7 mV and 166.6 mW/m2 respectively. The results of high-throughput sequencing analysis indicated the relative abundance of dominant electroactive bacteria, such as Trichococcus, Geobacter, and Pseudomonas, on the anode carbon brushes was higher than that of AST, and also identified such superior m-cresol-degrading bacteria as Bdellovibrio, Thermomonas, Hydrogenophaga, etc. Based on the determination of m-cresol metabolites detected by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), the possible biodegradation pathway of m-cresol under anaerobic and aerobic conditions in AFB-MFC was speculated. The results showed that m-cresol was decomposed into formic acid-acetic anhydride and 3-methylpropionic acid under the action of electrochemistry, which is a simple degradation pathway without peripheral metabolism in AFB-MFC.

Evaluation of the start-up of hydraulic conditions of a fluidised bed system

The development of this research was based on the analysis of an anaerobic fluidised bed reactor from the assembly of its components to the sealing of the system and further fluidisation. A hydrometer and a Venturi were used to identify the best means of measuring the flow rate. Results produced by both devices were similar, however, the latter was less effective due to the low flow rates necessary to operate the system. The hydrometer was the most adequate device for flow rate measurements in the range between 0.1 and 1.0 m³/h, whereas the Venturi proved to be an adequate device for the flow in the range between 0.3 and 0.7 m³/h. Sand with grain sizes varying from 357 to 1000 µm was used as support material. It was not observed statistically significant differences between the minimum fluidisation velocities related to the amount of supported material of 20% and 40% (V_SM/V_usable) added to the reactor. Forty percent of the usable volume occupied with sand is adequate to reach fluidisation, instead of only the expansion of the bed. The fluidisation velocities for the sand grain size of 357 µm were 8.4 m/h ± 0.25 for 20%, and 8.6 m/h ± 0.30 for 40%, whereas for the 505 µm they were, respectively for 20% and 40%, 9.2 m/h ±0.70 and 10.1 m/h ± 0.37. The hydraulic tests allow to stress that sand grain sizes varying from 357 to 505 µm are recommended to be used in a system with similar characteristics.

Effects of Different Biological Carriers in Microbial Fuel Cells

In this study, to investigate their effects on battery power generation performance and wastewater treatment capacity, coal semicoke granular-activated carbon, granular graphite, and walnut shell-activated carbon were added to the anode compartment of a microbial fuel cell. As revealed from the experimental results, adding activated carbon and graphite can significantly decrease the startup time of microbial fuel cells as well as provide the shortest startup time of coal semicoke-activated carbon fluidized bed microbial fuel cells (MGAC-MFCs). The activated carbon particle diameter did not increase from 0.275 to 0.55 mm, and the voltage changed the chemical oxygen demand (COD) degradation efficiency. However, the 0.275 mm activated carbon exhibited a maximum open-circuit voltage of 935 mV as well as a COD degradation efficiency of 95%, and the operation cycle was shortened. After running a cycle, the COD removals of different systems were 85, 93, and 89%, and the maximum value was obtained by the MGAC-MFC system. After the activated carbon and graphite particles were added, the electrical performance and production capacity of the sewage treatment microbial fuel cells were significantly enhanced.

Treatment of isopropanol wastewater in an anaerobic fluidized bed microbial fuel cell filled with macroporous adsorptive resin as multifunctional biocarrier

The isopropanol (IPA) wastewater was treated in an anaerobic fluidized bed microbial fuel cell (AFB-MFC) filled with macroporous adsorptive resin (MAR) particles as multifunctional biocarrier. MAR was used as a biological carriers and adsorbent. MAR was characterized by scanning electron microscope. The diffusion of isopropanol in MAR was studied by Materials Studio (MS) software, and diffusion coefficients were analyzed and calculated by molecular dynamics simulation. The simulation results were qualitatively consistent with the available experimental data. The diffusivity of IPA in MAR increased firstly, with the increasing IPA weight, and then decreased. The maximum diffusivity was resulted to be 0.3722 Å²/ps. In addition, the response surface methodology (RSM) and Box-Behnken design were used to study the effects of initial IPA concentration, flow rate and external resistance on performance of power output and pollutant degradation. The optimal experimental condition was observed as initial IPA concentration of 483.49 mg/L, a flow rate of 57.70 mL/min, and external resistance of 5225.78 Ω. After 21 h of operation under the optimized conditions, the maximum power density was 135.73 ± 0.17 mW/m² and the COD removal was 68.21 ± 0.24%, which increased by 65.85% and 9.29%, respectively.
