Chiral Sulfinamide-Olefin Ligands: Switchable Selectivity in Rhodium-Catalyzed Asymmetric 1,2-Addition of Arylboronic Acids to Aliphaticα-Ketoesters

Rhodium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Arylation-Induced Glycolate Aldol Additions of Silyl Glyoxylates

(Diene)Rh(I) complexes catalyze the stereoselective three-component coupling of silyl glyoxylates, arylboronic acids, and aldehydes to give glycolate aldol products. The participation of Rh-alkoxides in the requisite Brook rearrangement was established through two component Rh-catalyzed couplings of silyl glyoxylates with ArB(OH)2 to give silyl-protected mandelate derivatives. The intermediacy of a chiral Rh-enolate was inferred through enantioselective protonation using a chiral Rh-catalyst. Diastereoselective three-component couplings with aldehydes as terminating electrophiles to give racemic products were best achieved with a bulky aryl ester on the silyl glyoxylate reagent. Optimal enantioselective couplings were carried out with the tert-butyl ester variant using an anisole-derived enantiopure tricyclo[3.2.2.02,4 ]nonadiene ligand.

Chiral Brønsted acid catalyzed asymmetric oxidation of N-acyl sulfenamide by H2 O2 : An efficient approach to obtaining chiral N-acyl sulfinamide

Although the power of chiral sulfinamide reagents in synthetic chemistry has long been recognized, methods for their synthesis are still auxiliary-based approaches which possess the disadvantages of poor atom economy and limited substrate universality. Due to the weak nucleophilicity of amides, it is more difficult to prepare chiral N-acylsulfinamides by traditional methods. Herein, we describe an example of catalytic asymmetric synthesis of N-acyl sulfinamides. In this work, N-acyl sulfenamides act as useful substrates, because of the indispensable N-H bond, which could form an efficient hydrogen bond with chiral phosphoric acid. H₂ O₂ (35%) was used as the terminal oxidant for preparation of sulfinamides in high yields and enantioselectivities, which could be easily derivatized to sulfoxides without loss of the enantioselectivity.

Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Binaphthyl Supported Dihydro[1,6]diazecines

A short approach to chiral diaza-olefines from protected 2,2'-diamino-1,1'-binaphthyl is presented. Cis- and trans-olefines can be selectively obtained by twofold N-allylation followed by RCM or by bridging a 2,2'-diamino-1,1'-binaphthyl precursor with trans-1,4-dibromo-2-butene. Deprotection afforded cis- and trans-dihydro[1,6]diazecines 1 in 58 and 64% overall yield. The reactivity of the but-2-ene-1,4-diyl fragment was investigated yielding corresponding epoxides, diols, and mono- and dibromo products. In several cases rearrangements and participation of the proximate N-Boc group was observed. In no case could allylic substitution be accomplished. From 13 compounds X-ray structure analyses could be obtained.

Synthesis of Complex Tertiary Glycolates by Enantioconvergent Arylation of Stereochemically Labile α-Keto Esters

Enantioconvergent arylation reactions of boronic acids and racemic β-stereogenic α-keto esters have been developed. The reactions are catalyzed by a chiral (diene)Rh(I) complex and provide a wide array of β-stereogenic tertiary aryl glycolate derivatives with high levels of diastereo- and enantioselectivity. Racemization studies employing a series of sterically differentiated tertiary amines suggest that the steric nature of the amine base additive exerts a significant influence on the rate of substrate racemization.

The emergence of sulfoxides as efficient ligands in transition metal catalysis

Sulfoxides are capable of forming stable complexes with transition metals and there have been many comprehensive studies into their binding properties. However, the use of sulfoxides, particularly chiral sulfoxides, as ligands in transition metal catalysis is rather less well developed. This review aims to describe these catalytic studies and covers new developments that are showing very promising results and that have led to a renewed interest in this field.
