Evaluation of the Correlation between Porphyrin Accumulation in Cancer Cells and Functional Porphyrin Positions of the Phenyl Group

The dual role of photodynamic therapy to treat cancer and microbial infection

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive treatment showing promise against cancer and microbial infections. PDT targets tumor cells while sparing healthy tissue, reducing side effects. It induces immunogenic cell death, potentially stimulating antitumor immune responses and reducing cancer recurrence. In microbial treatment, PDT effectively combats bacteria, fungi and viruses. Combining PDT with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy enhances its efficacy. However, challenges such as tumor hypoxia, limited tissue penetration and phototoxicity necessitate ongoing research efforts to optimize PDT protocols and overcome limitations. Overall, PDT is versatile and continually advancing with refined protocols to improve its clinical utility against cancer and microbial infections.

Permeation behavior of porphyrin derivatives with different functional group positions across cancer cell membranes

Porphyrin, which shows selective accumulation in cancer cells, has attracted attention as a drug carrier. The influences of the functional porphyrin positions (β- and meso-positions) on porphyrin accumulation must be understood. In this work, we focused on the investigation of the phenyl functional group whose β-position influences cancer cell accumulation through direct membrane permeation and endocytosis. The endocytic pathway, in particular, is influenced by both clathrin-dependent and caveolae-dependent endocytosis.

Evaluation of Cancer Cell Growth Suppressibility of ω-3 Fatty Acids and Their Metabolites

According to current research, cancer cell growth is suppressed by ω-3 fatty acids, which are essential fatty acids. On the other hand, ω-3 fatty acids are metabolized to bioactivities in vivo. A systematic evaluation of the ability of ω-3 fatty acids and their metabolites to suppress cancer cell growth has not been sufficiently conducted. Our work evaluated the effect of ω-3 fatty acids (docosahexaenoic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid), trans fatty acid, and the metabolites (Resolvin E1, Maresin 1) on cancer cell growth suppressibility. Our results suggest that there may be optimal fatty acids depending on the kind of cancer cells, the presence or absence of hydroxyl group, and the double bond structure involved.
