Deciphering the progression of fine-needle aspiration: A bibliometric analysis of thyroid nodule research

This study aims to dissect the evolution and pivotal shifts in Fine-Needle Aspiration (FNA) research for thyroid nodules over the past 2 decades, focusing on delineating key technological advancements and their impact on clinical practice. A comprehensive bibliometric analysis was conducted on 5418 publications from the Web of Science Core Collection database (2000-2023). Publications were rigorously selected based on their contributions to the advancement of FNA techniques and their influence on thyroid nodule management practices. Our analysis uncovered significant breakthroughs, most notably the incorporation of ultrasound and molecular diagnostics in FNA, which have markedly elevated diagnostic accuracy. A pivotal shift was identified towards minimally invasive post-FNA treatments, such as Radiofrequency Ablation, attributable to these diagnostic advancements. Additionally, the emergence of AI-assisted cytology represents a frontier in precision diagnostics, promising enhanced disease identification. The geographical analysis pinpointed the United States, Italy, and China as key contributors, with the United States leading in both publication volume and citation impact. This bibliometric analysis sheds light on the transformative progression in FNA practices for thyroid nodules, characterized by innovative diagnostic technologies and a trend towards patient-centric treatment approaches. The findings underscore the need for further research into AI integration and global practice standardization. Future explorations should focus on the practical application of these advancements in diverse healthcare settings and their implications for global thyroid nodule management.

Validation of targeted next-generation sequencing of cell-free DNA from archival cerebrospinal fluid specimens for the detection of somatic variants in cancer involving the leptomeninges: Cytopathologic and radiographic correlation

BACKGROUND

Leptomeningeal metastases occur across multiple solid and lymphoid cancers, and patients typically undergo cytopathologic assessment of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in this setting. For patients diagnosed with metastatic cancer, the detection of actionable somatic mutations in CSF can provide clinically valuable information for treatment without the need for additional tissue collection.

METHODS

The authors validated a targeted next-generation sequencing assay for the detection of somatic variants in cancer (OncoPanel) on cell-free DNA (cfDNA) isolated from archival CSF specimens in a cohort of 25 patients who had undergone molecular testing of a prior tumor specimen.

RESULTS

CSF storage time and volume had no impact on cfDNA concentration or mean target coverage of the assay. Previously identified somatic variants in CSF cfDNA were detected in 88%, 50%, and 27% of specimens diagnosed cytologically as positive, suspicious/atypical, and negative for malignancy, respectively. Somatic variants were identified in 81% of CSF specimens from patients who had leptomeningeal enhancement on magnetic resonance imaging compared with 31% from patients without such enhancement.

CONCLUSIONS

These data highlight the stability of cfDNA in CSF, which allows for cytopathologic evaluation before triage for next-generation sequencing assays. For a subset of cases in which clinical suspicion is high but cytologic or radiographic studies are inconclusive, the detection of pathogenic somatic variants in CSF cfDNA may aid in the diagnosis of leptomeningeal metastases.

Thyroid fine-needle aspiration cytology: malignancy rate in the category of indeterminate significant atypia/indeterminate significant follicular lesion

BACKGROUND

Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a standard preoperative diagnostic modality for thyroid nodules. The Bethesda Thyroid Cytopathology Reporting System (TBSRTC) defines the FNAC atypia group as atypia of undetermined significance/follicular lesion of undetermined significance (AUS/FLUS).

OBJECTIVES

Determine the risk of malignancy after surgical resection in patients with AUS/FLUS.

DESIGN

Retrospective.

SETTING

Pathology department of a tertiary care center.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

All thyroid FNACs between 2015 and 2023 that were diagnosed as AUS/FLUS in Turkey. Patient demographics, preoperative ultrasonographic features, and follow-up data were collected.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Relationship between AUS/FLUS diagnosis and final histopathological diagnosis.

RESULTS

In total, 562 thyroid nodules were diagnosed as AUS/FLUS, and 267 (47.5%) were surgically excised. A malignant histopathological diagnosis was given in 28 cases (10.4%). Malignancy risk sensitivity of AUS/FLUS diagnosis was 75.68% (95% CI=58.80-88.23%), specificity was 55.24% (95% CI=50.91-59.52%), positive predictive value was 10.49% (95% CI=8.71-12.58%), and negative predictive value was 97.04% (95% CI=94.86-98.31%). In the ultrasonographic data, having symptomatic nodules, nodule calcification, and irregular nodule borders were all statistically significant signs of cancer in a one-variable analysis (P<.01). The presence of a family history emerged as a statistically significant prognostic marker for malignancy (P=.012). Although not statistically significant, the malignancy rate for nodules with nuclear atypia was 11.9%, significantly higher than the rate of 8.3% for nodules with architectural atypia only (P=0.32).

CONCLUSIONS

The diagnosis of AUS/FLUS has a high rate of predicting the risk of malignancy and should continue to be offered. In addition to cytopathological features, ultrasound data and family history should be taken into consideration when evaluating the case.

Risk assessment of cytologically indeterminate thyroid nodules with integrated molecular testing and repeat biopsy: a surgical decision-oriented tool

BACKGROUND

The preoperative diagnosis of cytologically indeterminate thyroid nodules (ITNs) is very challenging. In this study, we aim to provide an integrated risk assessment for thyroid nodules with indeterminate cytology to guide surgical decision-making, which includes results of blood tests, molecular tests, and repeat fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB).

METHODS

The study retrospectively included 265 ITNs between June 2019 and April 2022. According to our integrated risk assessment process that starts with blood testing, followed by supplementary DNA mutation detection on the first FNAB, and finally repeat FNAB, we divided the ITNs into high-risk and low-risk groups. Performance was evaluated with sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), and the consistency between the risk evaluation and histological results.

RESULTS

Of the 265 ITNs, 87 were included in the risk assessment process. The risk assessment had a sensitivity of 84.1%, specificity of 83.3%, PPV of 95.1%, NPV of 57.7%, and AUC of 0.837. The nodules with consistent results between the risk groups and histological outcomes, which included malignant cases in the high-risk group and benign cases in the low-risk group, accounted for 83.9% of all risk-assessed nodules.

CONCLUSIONS

These data suggest that the integrated risk assessment might provide proper information for surgical decision-making in patients with ITNs.

The Risk Stratification of Papillary Thyroid Cancer With Bethesda Category III (Atypia of Undetermined Significance/Follicular Lesion of Undetermined Significance) by Thyroid Fine-Needle Aspiration Could Be Assisted by Tumor Size for Precision Treatment

PURPOSE

To investigate the clinical characteristics of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) classified as Bethesda category III [atypia of undetermined significance (AUS)/follicular lesion of undetermined significance (FLUS)] by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) for precision treatment.

METHODS

A total of 1,739 patients diagnosed with Bethesda category III (AUS/FLUS) by FNA were investigated, and 290 patients diagnosed with PTC were analyzed.

RESULTS

The rate of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) was 82.1% (238/290). The rates of lymph node metastases were 44.9% (22/49) and 25.2% (56/222) for PTC and PTMC, respectively (p = 0.006). The rates of extra-thyroid extension were 46.2% (24/52) and 19.8% (47/237) (p < 0.001). Compared with PTMC, PTC had significantly higher odds ratios (ORs) of 3.41 (1.81-6.44, p < 0.001), 2.19 (1.16-4.13, p = 0.016), and 2.51 (1.29-4.88, p = 0.007) for extra-thyroid extension, multifocality, and lymph node metastases, respectively, after adjustment for age and gender. The larger size and BRAF V600E mutation had a robust synergistic effect for invasive features. The rates of lymph node metastases, multifocality, and extra-thyroid extension were significantly increased with larger sizes harboring BRAF V600E mutation. Compared with PTMC harboring wild type (WT)-BRAF, PTC harboring BRAF V600E mutation had adjusted higher ORs of 3.01 (1.26-8.68, p = 0.015), 3.20 (1.22-8.42, p = 0.018), and 5.62 (2.25-14.01, p < 0.001) for lymph node metastases, multifocality, and extra-thyroid extension, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

In this study, risk stratification was recommended for patients with Bethesda category III (AUS/FLUS) nodules with a size under 1 cm harboring WT-BRAF being regarded as low risk and should be recommended for active surveillance. Nodules with a size over 1 cm harboring WT-BRAF or those under 1 cm harboring BRAF V600E mutation could be regarded as moderate risk, and molecular testing should be recommended. However, those with a size over 1 cm harboring BRAF V600E mutation should be regarded as high risk, and a diagnostic surgery should be recommended.

Molecular Characterization of Thyroid Follicular Lesions in the Era of "Next-Generation" Techniques

It is unequivocally recognized that thyroid nodules are frequently detected in the adult population and mostly characterized by benign lesions (up to 70% of them), with only 5%-15% malignant lesions. The evaluation of thyroid lesions with fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) represents one of the first and most useful diagnostic tools in the definition of their nature. Despite the fact that the majority of thyroid lesions are correctly diagnosed as either benign (70%-75%) or malignant (5%-10%) entities, the remaining nodules (20%-25%) represent the "gray zone" of follicular lesions, which belong to indeterminate categories, according to the different classification systems. This indeterminate group of lesions includes both benign and malignant entities, which cannot be easily discriminate with morphology alone. In these last decades, the increasing role of molecular testings, feasibly performed on cytological material combined with the discoveries of specific genetic alterations in the field of thyroid pathology, has opened the pace to their more accurate and specific contribution on cytology. In fact, in 2015, in the revised management guidelines for patients with thyroid nodules and well-differentiated thyroid cancers (WDTCs), the American Thyroid Association (ATA) confirmed the performance of molecular testing in thyroid indeterminate cytology, and the same performance was addressed in recent update of the management of thyroid nodules in the second edition of the Bethesda system for reporting thyroid cytopathology (TBSRTC). In the current review, we discuss the role of molecular tests for the different thyroid diagnostic categories of the Bethesda system for reporting thyroid cytopathology, mostly focusing our attention on the follicular and indeterminate lesions.

Development of a Molecular Assay for Detection and Quantification of the BRAF Variation in Residual Tissue From Thyroid Nodule Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy Specimens

Importance

Thyroid cancer, predominantly papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), is common, but an estimated 30% of ultrasonography-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies of thyroid nodules are indeterminate. BRAF variation, associated with poor clinicopathological characteristics, is a useful molecular marker for diagnostics.

Objective

To develop a sensitive molecular assay for BRAF V600E detection in remaining tissue of thyroid FNA biopsies to identify patients with cancer carrying a BRAF variation.

Design, Setting, and Participants

This diagnostic study used tumor tissue from surgical formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) specimens and residual tissue from thyroid FNA biopsies for genomic DNA extraction. FFPE specimens served as the validation set, and residual tissue from FNA biopsies served as the test set. A molecular assay was developed for accurate detection of BRAF V600E variation using locked nucleic acid (LNA) probe-based droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR), and the assay was validated by BRAF V600E immunohistochemical staining (IHC). The study was conducted between February 2019 and May 2021.

Results

A total of 271 specimens, including 77 FFPE specimens (with a follow-up of 48 matched surgical specimens) and 146 residual FNA samples, were collected from 223 patients (mean [SD] age, 53.8 [15.3] years; 174 [78.0%] women; 49 [22.0%] men). The molecular assay by dPCR was first established to specifically and accurately detect and quantify wild-type BRAF and variant BRAF in DNA from human follicular thyroid carcinoma-derived FTC-133 and papillary thyroid carcinoma-derived BCPAP cells. The linearity of quantification of BRAF V600E was calculated (y = 0.7339x; R2 = 0.9996) with sensitivity at 0.02 copies/μL and reproducibility in detecting variant DNA at various dilutions(coefficient of variance in 0.3% DNA, 9.63%; coefficient of variance in 1.0% DNA, 7.41%). In validation testing, the dPCR assay and IHC staining exhibited 100% specificity in concordantly identifying BRAF V600E in PTCs (κ = 0.873; P < .001) and sensitivity of 32.0% (95% CI, 19.1% to 44.9%) in dPCR and 26.0% (95% CI, 13.1% to 38.9%) in IHC staining, with an improvement by 23.08% in dPCR compared with the IHC staining. The dPCR assay further detected BRAF V600E in 39 of 146 residual FNA specimens (26.7%). At short-term follow-up, 48 patients, including 14 of 39 patients with BRAF variation and 34 of 107 patients without BRAF variation on residual FNA specimens, underwent resection. The dPCR assay of BRAF status in the matched surgical specimens showed BRAF V600E variations in 12 patients and wild-type BRAF in 36 patients, with a high agreement to that in residual tissue of FNA specimens (κ = 0.789; P < .001). Among 14 patients with BRAF variations on residual FNA, 13 were diagnosed with PTC and 1 was diagnosed with anaplastic thyroid cancer at the thyroidectomy.

Conclusions and Relevance

This diagnostic study developed a sensitive molecular assay for detection and quantification of BRAF V600E variation in residual tissue from thyroid FNA biopsies to identify patients with cancer harboring BRAF V600E in a cost-effective manner, highlighting the clinical value of molecular assay of the remaining FNA tissue in the management of thyroid nodules.

False positive cases in thyroid cytopathology - the experience of a single laboratory and a systematic review

INTRODUCTION

Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is fundamental in the pre-operative assessment of thyroid nodules. However, the shining success of thyroid FNA is occasionally eclipsed by false positive (FP) cytological diagnoses. We describe our experience regarding FP cytological diagnoses and present a literature review concerning FP rates.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We retrospectively analyzed 2031 consecutive cytology reports. FP was defined as a case with "suspicious for malignancy" or "malignant" cytology, whose surgical follow-up failed to confirm the initial diagnosis of malignancy. We used the PubMed database for the literature review using specific search terms ("thyroid", "cytology", "false positive").

RESULTS

Out of 2031 FNA reports, 93 cases with "suspicious for malignancy" or "malignant" cytology underwent surgical excision. Histopathology did not confirm malignancy in 10 cases (0.6% FP rate). Nodules with FP cytology were significantly larger (P = 0.0024) than those with with TP (true positive) cytology. A review of 25 publications shows comparable results to ours with some slight differences. The majority of studies achieve a FP rate below 3%. Most FP cytological diagnoses turn out to be non-neoplastic lesions (nodular hyperplasia, adenomatous nodule, lymphocytic thyroiditis), which combined account for 80.5% of all histological diagnoses.

CONCLUSIONS

Thyroid nodules with FP cytology were larger than nodules with TP cytology. Most studies manage to adhere to the recommended FP rates, or values close to them, with some outliers. Nevertheless, the mean FP rate values are very close to the value recommended by The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology (TBSRTC). The FP rate value depends on how one defines true negative cases, which can be either histologically proven benign cases, via a benign clinical course, or by assuming that cytologically benign cases remain as such.

Thyroid and Molecular Testing. Advances in Thyroid Molecular Cytopathology

Thyroid nodules are a common finding in the adult population including the fact that more than 50% of individuals, over the age of 60, have thyroid nodules. The majority have been mostly detected with ultrasonography and 10% by palpation. The majority of these nodules are benign, whereas 5–15% of them are malignant. The pre-operative diagnosis of cancer is a critical challenge in order to ensure that each patient can be treated with the best tailored management with a reduction of unnecessary surgery for benign lesions. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) represents the first and most important diagnostic tool for the evaluation of thyroid lesions. According to the literature, FNAC is able to render a conclusive diagnosis in up to 70–80% of all cases. For the remaining 20–30% of nodules, cytological diagnoses fall into the category of indeterminate lesions mostly due to the lack of specific morphological features. According to the Bethesda system for reporting thyroid cytopathology (TBSRTC), indeterminate lesions can be sub-stratified into three different subcategories including “atypia of undetermined significance/follicular lesion of undetermined significance-AUS/FLUS”; “follicular or Hürthle cell neoplasm/suspicious for follicular or Hürthle cell neoplasm-FN/SFN”; and “suspicious for malignancy-SFM”. Many of these indeterminate lesions undergo repetition or diagnostic lobectomy. Nonetheless, the majority of these cases will have a benign diagnosis due to the fact that the rate of cancer ranges between 6 and 30%. It stands to reason that the application of ancillary technique, mostly molecular testing, emerged as a critical additional tool for those thyroid indeterminate lesions. Since the early 1990s, material collected from cytological samples yields sufficient and adequate cells for the detection of point mutation or gene fusions. Nonetheless, the further availability of new sequencing technologies such as next-generation sequencing (NGS) has led to more comprehensive molecular applications adopted now in clinical use. The current review investigates the multiple advances in the field of molecular testing applied in thyroid cytology.

Thyroid Carcinoma: Phenotypic Features, Underlying Biology and Potential Relevance for Targeting Therapy

Thyroid carcinoma consists a group of phenotypically heterogeneous cancers. Recent advances in biological technologies have been advancing the delineation of genetic, epigenetic, and non-genetic factors that contribute to the heterogeneities of these cancers. In this review article, we discuss new findings that are greatly improving the understanding of thyroid cancer biology and facilitating the identification of novel targets for therapeutic intervention. We review the phenotypic features of different subtypes of thyroid cancers and their underlying biology. We discuss recent discoveries in thyroid cancer heterogeneities and the critical mechanisms contributing to the heterogeneity with emphases on genetic and epigenetic factors, cancer stemness traits, and tumor microenvironments. We also discuss the potential relevance of the intratumor heterogeneity in understanding therapeutic resistance and how new findings in tumor biology can facilitate designing novel targeting therapies for thyroid cancer.

Relevance of rosette patterns in variants of papillary thyroid carcinoma

INTRODUCTION

The detection of rosette-like clusters (RLC) of follicular cells in thyroid carcinoma has been reported mostly in the columnar cell variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Despite the fact that diagnosing variants of PTC is no longer encouraged by The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology, the identification of cytomorphological features such as RLC linked with these tumours might help reduce possible misinterpretation in thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology. We accordingly investigated the potential correlation of architectural patterns including RLC with PTC variants.

METHODS

We analysed 225 thyroid FNA cytology cases diagnosed as suspicious for malignancy (SFM) and positive for malignancy (M) over a 1-year time where all samples had corresponding histology. We also included 150 benign lesions from the same period. The presence of RLC vs similar appearing solid clusters, papillary structures and microfollicles were evaluated. We also performed immunocytochemistry and molecular testing for BRAFV600E.

RESULTS

We included 100 (44.4%) SFM favouring PTC and 125 (55.6%) M cases with cyto-histological correlation. On histology, all SFM and M cases showed malignancy including 140 (62.2%) classic PTC and 85 (37.8%) PTC variants. The cytomorphological patterns in all FNA samples included solid (74%), papillary (89%), microfollicular (70%), and pseudo-RLC morphology (25.7%). We identified only pseudo-RLC in 33 FNA specimens from PTC variant cases that included tall cell variant (42.4%), hobnail variant (21.2%) and miscellaneous variants (36.3%) of PTC. No definitive RLC were detected in our series. Immunocytochemistry and BRAFV600E were not specifically linked with an RLC pattern.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings demonstrate that in our dataset the architectural pattern of RLC was not recognised within PTC variants. However, we did identify a pseudo-RLC pattern that was observed in association with tall cell variant and hobnail variant cases of PTC.

Is thyroid core needle biopsy a valid compliment to fine-needle aspiration?

Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) has long been considered the first and an important diagnostic tool in the evaluation of thyroid nodules. The advantages of FNA include simplicity, safety, cost-effectiveness, high diagnostic accuracy, and low complication rate. Nevertheless, limitations associated with FNA include a substantial rate of inconclusive results and indeterminate interpretations. Therefore, core needle biopsy (CNB) of the thyroid gland has been proposed as a complementary or even alternate diagnostic method to evaluate thyroid nodules. Although controversial, a growing number of researchers have reported CNB to be an effective and safe sampling method for thyroid nodules, especially for cases with inadequate or indeterminate FNA yields. Skeptics highlight local pain and bleeding risk. Supporters highlight the potential likelihood of overcoming FNA limitations by obtaining a larger amount of tissue and using architecture and cellular details to guide possible ancillary testing. This review evaluates the indications, advantages, and disadvantages of CNB as compared with FNA of the thyroid gland.

Noninvasive Follicular Thyroid Neoplasm with Papillary-Like Nuclear Features (NIFTP): An Update

Based on evidence accumulated over the past three decades showing that noninvasive encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma has an indolent clinical behavior and a RAS-like molecular profile similar to follicular adenoma, the Endocrine Pathology Society working group in 2016 proposed to rename this entity as "noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP)" in order to eliminate the term "carcinoma" from the diagnosis. It is a major evidence-based attempt initiated by an international group of endocrine pathologists to tackle the epidemic of thyroid cancer overdiagnosis and overtreatment. However, its creation and continuous existence are not without controversies. NIFTP has sparked a wave of follow up studies aiming to decipher the exact nature of this new entity. In this review, we summarize the rationale, diagnostic criteria, controversies and subsequent changes to the NIFTP concept, and their impact on patient care and pathology practice.

Thyroid nodules with Hürthle cells: the malignancy risk in relation to the FNA outcome category

PURPOSE

The aim was to find whether the presence of Hürthle cells (HC) in a smear influences the categorization of FNA results or the risk of malignancy (RoM) of particular categories of cytological diagnosis.

METHODS

25,220 FNA performed in a single center in years 2005-2017 were analyzed. Almost all the examined patients were exposed to moderate iodine deficiency for most of their lives. The distribution of FNA outcome categories was compared between two groups: with or without HC (HC and non-HC). The RoM was evaluated on the basis of postoperative histopathological examination (3082 patients).

RESULTS

HC were found in 7.5% of diagnostic FNA. HC nodules were classified into categories II (78.2% vs. 91.9%, p < 0.0000) and VI (0.4% vs. 1.2%, p = 0.0017) less often than non-HC nodules, but more frequently to categories III (14.4% vs. 5.8%, p < 0.0000), IV (11.2% vs. 0.9%, p < 0.0000) and V (1.5% vs. 0.8%, p = 0.0013). There were no significant differences in RoM between HC and non-HC nodules. The RoM in HC and non-HC nodules of particular categories of the Bethesda system was as follows: II: 1.8% vs. 0.8%, III: 9.7% vs. 3.8% when only the last FNA was considered and 10.8% vs. 6.4% when the category III in any performed FNA was considered; IV: 12.7% vs. 10.9%; V: 41.7% vs. 58.2%; and VI: 100% vs. 96.9%.

CONCLUSIONS

HC nodules are classified into categories of equivocal cytological outcomes more often than nodules without HC. Nevertheless, the presence of HC in a smear does not significantly affect the RoM of FNA categories.

Molecular Alterations in Thyroid Carcinoma

Thyroid carcinoma is the most common cancer in the endocrine system. Recent advances, using next-generation sequencing, have shed light on the molecular pathogenesis of thyroid cancer. Constitutional activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway through RAS mutation, BRAF mutation, and/or fusions involving receptor tyrosine kinase (eg, (REarranged during Transfection) RET-PTC) plays a central role in tumorigenesis and opens doors to promising tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy. Several molecular signatures, such as TERT promoter mutation and TP53 mutation, are associated with tumor progression. This article provides a concise and updated summary of the main genetic alterations in thyroid carcinoma.

The Role of Molecular Testing for the Indeterminate Thyroid FNA

Thyroid nodules are common in the adult population where a majority are benign and only 4.0% to 6.5% are malignant. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a key method used in the early stages to evaluate and triage patients with thyroid nodules. While a definitive cytological diagnosis is provided in more than 70–75% of all thyroid FNA cases, the group of indeterminate lesions offers a challenge in terms of interpretation and clinical management. Molecular testing platforms have been developed, are recognized as an option by the 2015 American Thyroid Association Guidelines, and are frequently used in conjunction with FNA as an integral part of the cytologic evaluation. In this review, the utility of molecular testing options for nodules assigned to the group of indeterminate thyroid FNAs is described.
