A simple aqueous-solution processing route to prepare quantum-confined CdS nanorods

Ferroelectric gated electrical transport in CdS nanotetrapods

Complex nanostructures such as branched semiconductor nanotetrapods are promising building blocks for next-generation nanoelectronics. Here we report on the electrical transport properties of individual CdS tetrapods in a field effect transistor (FET) configuration with a ferroelectric Ba(0.7)Sr(0.3)TiO(3) film as high-k, switchable gate dielectric. A cryogenic four-probe scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is used to probe the electrical transport through individual nanotetrapods at different temperatures. A p-type field effect is observed at room temperature, owing to the enhanced gate capacitance coupling. And the reversible remnant polarization of the ferroelectric gate dielectric leads to a well-defined nonvolatile memory effect. The field effect is shown to originate from the channel tuning in the arm/core/arm junctions of nanotetrapods. At low temperature (8.5 K), the nanotetrapod devices exhibit a ferroelectric-modulated single-electron transistor (SET) behavior. The results illustrate how the characteristics of a ferroelectric such as switchable polarization and high dielectric constant can be exploited to control the functionality of individual three-dimensional nanoarchitectures.

Synthesis of high aspect ratio quantum-size CdS nanorods and their surface-dependent photoluminescence

Colloidal CdS nanorods with diameters near 4 nm and narrow size distributions ( approximately +/-10%) were synthesized up to 300 nm long by a sequential reactant injection technique that utilizes phosophonic acids as capping ligands. The phosphonic acid strongly passivates the nonpolar CdS surfaces and sequential reactant injection provides controlled CdS formation kinetics to enable heterogeneous and facet-selective CdS deposition on the more reactive {002} surfaces. With this process, the nanorod length can be systematically increased by increasing reactant addition to extend nanorod growth. The phosphonic acid concentration, however, is quite important, as "low" concentrations allow radial deposition and branching to occur. These high aspect ratio (>100) CdS nanorods luminesce with relatively high efficiencies of 10.8% quantum yield at room temperature. The luminescence, however, mostly arises from trap-related recombination, and the emission is significantly red-shifted from the absorption edge. Various surface passivation treatments were explored to eliminate trap emission and increase the luminescence quantum yield. Thiol and amine passivation both significantly reduced trap emission and enhanced band-edge emission, but the total luminescence quantum yields dropped significantly, with a maximum measured value of 1.5% for the amine-passivated CdS nanorods.

Synthesis of Gold Nano- and Microplates in Hexagonal Liquid Crystals

Single-crystalline gold nano- and microplates with triangular or hexagonal shapes are synthesized by reduction of HAuCl(4) in lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) mainly made of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymers and water after adding a small amount of capping agents, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB). During the growth of such plates, capping agents play the crucial role. It is found that there is an optimal value of CTAB or TBAB concentration for producing microplates. The selective adsorption of CTAB or TBAB on certain crystallographic facets may be the key point of the supposed mechanism. Although LLC does not really act as a template, it provides an ordered structure confining CTAB as well as the nascent metal nuclei, which enhances the oriented attachment of nuclei and thus the consequent growth of single-crystal plates.
