Theoretical study on the photodegradation mechanism of nona-BDEs in methanol

Photodecomposition properties of brominated flame retardants (BFRs)

This study investigates the geometric and electronic properties of selected BFRs in their ground (S₀) and first singlet excited (S₁) states deploying methods of the density functional theory (DFT) and the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). We estimate the effect of the S₀→ S₁ transition on the elongations of the C-Br bond, identify the frontier molecular orbitals involved in the excitation process and compute partial atomic charges for the most photoreactive bromine atoms. The bromine atom attached to an ortho position in HBB (with regard to C-C bond; 2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexabromobiphenyl), TBBA (with respect to the hydroxyl group; 2,2',6,6'-tetrabromobisphenol A), HBDE and BTBPE (in reference to C-O linkage; 2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexabromodiphenylether and 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane, respectively) bears the highest positive atomic charge. This suggests that, these positions undergo reductive debromination reactions to produce lower brominated molecules. Debromination reactions ensue primarily in the aromatic compounds substituted with the highest number of bromine atoms owing to the largest stretching of the C-Br bond in the first excited state. The analysis of the frontier molecular orbitals indicates that, excitations of BFRs proceed via π→π*, or π→σ* or n→σ* electronic transitions. The orbital analysis reveals that, the HOMO-LUMO energy gap (E^H-L) for all investigated bromine-substituted aromatic molecules falls lower (1.85-4.91 eV) than for their non-brominated analogues (3.39-8.07 eV), in both aqueous and gaseous media. The excitation energies correlate with the E^H-L values. The excitation energies and E^H-L values display a linear negative correlation with the number of bromine atoms attached to the molecule. Spectral analysis of the gaseous-phase systems reveals that, the highly brominated aromatics endure lower excitation energies and exhibit red shifts of their absorption bands in comparison to their lower brominated congeners. We attained a satisfactory agreement between the experimentally measured absorption peak (λ_max) and the theoretically predicted oscillator strength (λ_max) for the UV-Vis spectra. This study further confirms that, halogenated aromatics only absorb light in the UV spectral region and that effective photodegradation of these pollutants requires the presence of photocatalysts.

Effect analysis of quantum chemical descriptors and substituent characteristics on Henry's law constants of polybrominated diphenyl ethers at different temperatures

Twelve substituent descriptors, 17 quantum chemical descriptors and 1/T were selected to establish a quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) model of Henry's law constants for 7 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) at five different temperatures. Then, the lgH of 202 congeners at different temperatures were predicted. The variation rule and regulating mechanism of lgH was studied from the perspectives of both quantum chemical descriptors and substituent characteristics. The R² for modeling and testing sets of the final QSPR model are 0.977 and 0.979, respectively, thus indicating good fitness and predictive ability for Henry' law constants of PBDEs at different temperatures. The favorable hydrogen binding sites are the 5,5',6,6'-positions for high substituent congeners and the O atom of the ether bond for low substituent congeners, which affects the interaction between PBDEs and water molecules. lgH is negatively and linearly correlated with 1/T, and the variation trends of lgH with temperature are primarily regulated by individual substituent characteristics, wherein: the more substituents involved, the smaller the lgH. The significant sequence for the main effect of substituent positions is para>meta>ortho, where the ortho-positions are mainly involved in second-order interaction effect (64.01%). Having two substituents in the same ring also provides a significant effect, with 81.36% of second-order interaction effects, particularly where there is an adjacent distribution (55.02%).

Theoretical Studies on Structures, Properties and Dominant Debromination Pathways for Selected Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers

The B3LYP/6-311+G(d)-SDD method, which considers the relativistic effect of bromine, was adopted for the calculations of the selected polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the present study, in which the B3LYP/6-311+G(d) method was also applied. The calculated values and experimental data for structural parameters of the selected PBDEs were compared to find the suitable theoretical methods for their structural optimization. The results show that the B3LYP/6-311+G(d) method can give the better results (with the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of 0.0268 for the C–Br bond and 0.0161 for the C–O bond) than the B3LYP/6-311+G(d)-SDD method. Then, the B3LYP/6-311+G(d) method was applied to predict the structures for the other selected PBDEs (both neutral and anionic species). The lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and the electron affinity are of a close relationship. The electron affinities (vertical electron affinity and adiabatic electron affinity) were discussed to study their electron capture abilities. To better estimate the conversion of configuration for PBDEs, the configuration transition states for BDE-5, BDE-22 and BDE-47 were calculated at the B3LYP/ 6-311+G(d) level in both gas phase and solution. The possible debromination pathway for BDE-22 were also studied, which have bromine substituents on two phenyl rings and the bromine on meta-position prefers to depart from the phenyl ring. The reaction profile of the electron-induced reductive debromination for BDE-22 were also shown in order to study its degradation mechanism.

Dehalogenation of persistent halogenated organic compounds: A review of computational studies and quantitative structure-property relationships

Dehalogenation is one of the highly important degradation reactions for halogenated organic compounds (HOCs) in the environment, which is also being developed as a potential type of the remediation technologies. In combination with the experimental results, intensive efforts have recently been devoted to the development of efficient theoretical methodologies (e.g. multi-scale simulation) to investigate the mechanisms for dehalogenation of HOCs. This review summarizes the structural characteristics of neutral molecules, anionic species and excited states of HOCs as well as their adsorption behavior on the surface of graphene and the Fe cluster. It discusses the key physiochemical properties (e.g. frontier orbital energies and thermodynamic properties) calculated at various levels of theory (e.g. semiempirical, ab initio, density functional theory (DFT) and the periodic DFT) as well as their connections to the reactivity and reaction pathway for the dehalogenation. This paper also reviews the advances in the linear and nonlinear quantitative structure-property relationship models for the dehalogenation kinetics of HOCs and in the mathematical modeling of the dehalogenation processes. Furthermore, prospects of further expansion and exploration of the current research fields are described in this article.

Excited States and photodebromination of selected polybrominated diphenyl ethers: computational and quantitative structure--property relationship studies

This paper presents a density functional theory (DFT)/time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) study on the lowest lying singlet and triplet excited states of 20 selected polybrominateddiphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners, with the solvation effect included in the calculations using the polarized continuum model (PCM). The results obtained showed that for most of the brominated diphenyl ether (BDE) congeners, the lowest singlet excited state was initiated by the electron transfer from HOMO to LUMO, involving a π–σ* excitation. In triplet excited states, structure of the BDE congeners differed notably from that of the BDE ground states with one of the specific C–Br bonds bending off the aromatic plane. In addition, the partial least squares regression (PLSR), principal component analysis-multiple linear regression analysis (PCA-MLR), and back propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) approaches were employed for a quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) study. Based on the previously reported kinetic data for the debromination by ultraviolet (UV) and sunlight, obtained QSPR models exhibited a reasonable evaluation of the photodebromination reactivity even when the BDE congeners had same degree of bromination, albeit different patterns of bromination.

A Study on Pathway and QSPR Models for Debromination of PBDEs with Pseudopotential Method

Neutral PBDEs congeners and their corresponding radical anions were studied with the pseudopotential method of stuttgart group (SDD) effective-core potentials basis set for the bromine atoms and the all-electron basis set for all other atoms. The pseudopotential method can be used for compounds containing heavy elements with relativistic effects and can reduce the computational time. The quantitative structure property relationship (QSPR) study was also performed in this work to develop models to predict the normolized reaction rate constants for the reductive debromination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) by zero-valent iron (ZVI). The partial least squares regression (PLSR), principal component analysis-multiple linear regression analysis (PCA-MLR), and back propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) approaches were employed for the QSPR study between the molecular descriptors and the logarithm of normalized reaction rate constants of fourteen selected BDE congeners. The results show that the ANN models could be more satisfactorily to predict the rate constants than the PLSR and PCA-MLR models.
