Spiers Memorial Lecture: New directions in molecular scattering

The field of molecular scattering is reviewed as it pertains to gas-gas as well as gas-surface chemical reaction dynamics. We emphasize the importance of collaboration of experiment and theory, from which new directions of research are being pursued on increasingly complex problems. We review both experimental and theoretical advances that provide the modern toolbox available to molecular-scattering studies. We distinguish between two classes of work. The first involves simple systems and uses experiment to validate theory so that from the validated theory, one may learn far more than could ever be measured in the laboratory. The second class involves problems of great complexity that would be difficult or impossible to understand without a partnership of experiment and theory. Key topics covered in this review include crossed-beams reactive scattering and scattering at extremely low energies, where quantum effects dominate. They also include scattering from surfaces, reactive scattering and kinetics at surfaces, and scattering work done at liquid surfaces. The review closes with thoughts on future promising directions of research.

H2-D2 Exchange Activity and Electronic Structure of Ag x Pd1-x Alloy Catalysts Spanning Composition Space

Many computational studies of catalytic surface reaction kinetics have demonstrated the existence of linear scaling relationships between physical descriptors of catalysts and reaction barriers on their surfaces. In this work, the relationship between catalyst activity, electronic structure, and alloy composition was investigated experimentally using a Ag x Pd1-x Composition Spread Alloy Film (CSAF) and a multichannel reactor array that allows measurement of steady-state reaction kinetics at 100 alloy compositions simultaneously. Steady-state H2-D2 exchange kinetics were measured at atmospheric pressure on Ag x Pd1-x catalysts over a temperature range of 333-593 K and a range of inlet H2 and D2 partial pressures. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to characterize the CSAF by determining the local surface compositions and the valence band electronic structure at each composition. The valence band photoemission spectra showed that the average energy of the valence band, ε̅v, shifts linearly with composition from -6.2 eV for pure Ag to -3.4 eV for pure Pd. At all reaction conditions, the H2-D2 exchange activity was found to be highest on pure Pd and gradually decreased as the alloy was diluted with Ag until no activity was observed for compositions with x Pd < 0.58. Measured H2-D2 exchange rates across the CSAF were fit using the Dual Subsurface Hydrogen (2H') mechanism to extract estimates for the activation energy barriers to dissociative adsorption, ΔE ads ‡, associative desorption, ΔE des ‡, and the surface-to-subsurface diffusion energy, ΔE ss, as a function of alloy composition, x Pd. The 2H' mechanism predicts ΔE ads ‡ = 0-10 kJ/mol, ΔE des ‡ = 30-65 kJ/mol, and ΔE ss = 20-30 kJ/mol for all alloy compositions with x Pd ≥ 0.64, including for the pure Pd catalyst (i.e., x Pd = 1). For these Pd-rich catalysts, ΔE des ‡ and ΔE ss appeared to increase by ∼5 kJ/mol with decreasing x Pd. However, due to the coupling of kinetic parameters in the 2H' mechanism, we are unable to exclude the possibility that the kinetic parameters predicted when x Pd ≥ 0.64 are identical to those predicted for pure Pd. This suggests that H2-D2 exchange occurs only on bulk-like Pd domains, presumably due to the strong interactions between H2 and Pd. In this case, the decrease in catalytic activity with decreasing x Pd can be explained by a reduction in the availability of surface Pd at high Ag compositions.

Hot-Atom Mechanism in Syngas Methanation on Precovered Pd(100) Surfaces

The excess energy of subsurface hydrogen species may facilitate overcoming reaction barriers and remarkably alters the reaction pathways. We present an in-depth study on the different reactivity of surface and subsurface hydrogen species in syngas methanation on the O/C-covered Pd(100) by using density functional theory calculations and microkinetic simulations. It is shown that the apparent energy barriers to form H₂O and CH₄ are reduced by 0.87 and 0.61 eV for the case in which the hot subsurface hydrogen species are involved in the whole hydrogenation process. The activity of O-covered Pd(100) is better than that of the C-covered surface, and the reactivity of subsurface hydrogen species is much higher than that of surface hydrogen species under ambient conditions. Increasing CO partial pressure strongly enhances the reactivity of subsurface hydrogen species in syngas methanation on the O-covered Pd(100). These important results are helpful for understanding the hot-atom mechanism through subsurface heterogeneous catalysis.

Hydride Formation Diminishes CO2 Reduction Rate on Palladium

The catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 includes the dissociation of hydrogen and further reaction with CO2 and intermediates. We investigate how the amount of hydrogen in the bulk of the catalyst affects the hydrogenation reaction taking place at the surface. For this, we developed an experimental setup described herein, based on a magnetic suspension balance and an infrared spectrometer, and measured pressure-composition isotherms of the Pd-H system under conditions relevant for CO2 reduction. The addition of CO2 has no influence on the measured hydrogen absorption isotherms. The pressure dependence of the CO formation rate changes suddenly upon formation of the β-PdH phase. This effect is attributed to a smaller surface coverage of hydrogen due to repulsive electronic interactions affecting both bulk and surface hydrogen.

Facets and vertices regulate hydrogen uptake and release in palladium nanocrystals

Crystal facets, vertices and edges govern the energy landscape of metal surfaces and thus the chemical interactions on the surface^1,2. The facile absorption and desorption of hydrogen at a palladium surface provides a useful platform for defining how metal-solute interactions impact properties relevant to energy storage, catalysis and sensing^3-5. Recent advances in in operando and in situ techniques have enabled the phase transitions of single palladium nanocrystals to be temporally and spatially tracked during hydrogen absorption^6-11. We demonstrate herein that in situ X-ray diffraction can be used to track both hydrogen absorption and desorption in palladium nanocrystals. This ensemble measurement enabled us to delineate distinctive absorption and desorption mechanisms for nanocrystals containing exclusively (111) or (100) facets. We show that the rate of hydrogen absorption is higher for those nanocrystals containing a higher number of vertices, consistent with hydrogen absorption occurring quickly after β-phase nucleation at lattice-strained vertices^9,10. Tracking hydrogen desorption revealed initial desorption rates to be nearly tenfold faster for samples with (100) facets, presumably due to the faster recombination of surface hydrogen atoms. These results inspired us to make nanocrystals with a high number of vertices and (100) facets, which were found to accommodate fast hydrogen uptake and release.

Quantum and classical dynamics of reactive scattering of H2 from metal surfaces

State-of-the-art theoretical models allow nowadays an accurate description of H₂/metal surface systems and phenomena relative to heterogeneous catalysis. Here we review the most relevant ones investigated during the last 10 years.
