Synthesis, Photophysics and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Stilbenoid Pyrimidine‐Based Dyes Bearing Methylenepyran Donor Groups

Multifaceted Study of a Y-Shaped Pyrimidine Compound: Assessing Structural Properties, Docking Interactions, and Third-Order Nonlinear Optics

In this study, we report the synthesis of a new compound, N4,N4-dimethyl-2-(methylsulfanyl)-N6-(4-phenoxyphenyl)pyrimidine-4,6-diamine (DMS), and its comprehensive analysis through structural and spectroscopic characterizations, reactivity parameters, and nonlinear optical properties, utilizing a combination of experimental and computational techniques. The experimental aspect of the investigation encompassed structural characterization using X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic assessments employing Fourier-transform infrared, Raman, and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, along with thermal analysis. Our computational approach involved density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to examine the local reactivity properties of DMS. We employed fundamental reactivity descriptors to evaluate DMS's local reactivity and utilized MD simulations to identify DMS atoms engaging in significant interactions with water molecules. We conducted periodic DFT calculations on DMS's crystal structure to investigate the contributions of specific atoms and groups to the compound's overall stability as well as to analyze noncovalent interactions between DMS molecules. We assessed the nonlinear optical properties through dynamic second hyperpolarizability and third-order nonlinear susceptibility calculations. Additionally, we conducted a comparative analysis of the static and dynamic second hyperpolarizability for the DMS molecule within the sum-over-states framework. The obtained value for the third-order nonlinear susceptibility, (λ = 1907 nm), exceeds those of other organic materials reported in previous studies, indicating that the DMS crystal holds promise as a nonlinear optical material for potential application in photonic device fabrication. Furthermore, molecular docking studies were performed with the 3E5A, 4EUT, and 4EUU proteins, yielding binding affinities of -8.1, -8.2, and -8.3 kcal/mol, respectively, in association with the ligand.

Theoretical investigation of the effect of changing the auxiliary acceptor on the performance of organic D-A'-A dyes used as sensitizers in DSSCs

CONTEXT

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have displayed huge potential in inexpensive, efficient, and clean solar energy technology. In this work, seven new dyes with the structure D-A'-A were designed in which the thiophene in the reference dye was replaced by auxiliary acceptors (A'). These dyes consist mainly of a pyranylidene-based electron donor D and the cyanoacrylic acid moiety as acceptor A. A computational investigation was carried out on the effect of various auxiliary acceptors A' on the efficiency of D-A'-A dyes in isolation and after binding to the semiconductor TiO2. Optimized structures, geometrical, optoelectronic, and photovoltaic parameters were calculated to predict promising dyes for potential use as solar cell sensitizers, including band gap (Egap), natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, nonlinear optical properties (NLO), UV-Vis absorption spectra, maximum absorption wavelength (λmax), reorganization energy (λtotal), light-harvesting efficiency (LHE), electron injection driving force (ΔGinject) and open-circuit photovoltage (VOC). The results of this study revealed that all designed dyes, compared to the reference dye, are characterized by small Egap and λtotal values as well as large λmax, in addition to significant NLO properties and large adsorption energy (Eads). Therefore, all studied dyes can be used as sensitizers in DSSC.

METHODS

Using Density Functional Theory (DFT) approaches with the B3LYP functional and the 6-31G(d,p) basis set, all ground state geometries of the isolated dyes were fully optimized. Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) method using the CAM-B3LYP/6-31G(d,p)/IEF-PCM level was applied to simulate the UV-visible absorption properties. All isolated dye calculations were performed using the Gaussian 09 software package. DFT calculations have been carried out with the DMol3 package included in Materials Studio for simulating the adsorption of the investigated dyestuff on the TiO2 surface of anatase (101), using the generalized gradient corrected approximation (GGA) approach of the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional with the basic set of digital double polarisation (DNP). To study the optical performance of dye@TiO2 the PBE/DNP method present in DMol3 was applied.

The arylvinylpyrimidine scaffold: a tunable platform for luminescent and optical materials

The incorporation of electron-withdrawing pyrimidine rings within π-extended systems allows access to a wide variety of fluorescent push-pull molecules that display emission properties highly sensitive to external stimuli. A suitable design of these compounds leads to interesting materials for a variety of optoelectronic applications. In this context, a vast number of arylvinylpyrimidine-based chromophores have been extensively studied during the last two decades. Along with the main synthetic pathways, this review summarizes the photophysical features of these active compounds having great potential and their most important applications as sensors and luminescence materials.

V-Shaped Methylpyrimidinium Chromophores for Nonlinear Optics

A series of four V-shaped methylpyrimidinium salts bearing diphenylamino-electron-donating groups appended at various pyrimidine positions were designed. These chromophores were obtained by regioselective N(1) monomethylation by methyl methanesulfonate of the pyrimidine core. Linear optical properties were studied experimentally and electronic properties were further completed by (TD)-DFT calculations. The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were also studied using electric field induced second harmonic generation (EFISH) method in chloroform, and all pyrimidinium salts exhibited μβ₀ >1000×10^-48  esu. The 2,4-disubstituted pyrimidinium core is preferred over 4,6-disubstitution as it enhances the NLO response and increases the dipole moment. (E,E)-2,4-Bis[4-(diphenylamino)styryl]-1-methylpyrimidin-1-ium methanesulfonate appears to be the best NLO-phore in chloroform in the series (μβ₀ =2500×10^-48  esu) and a figure of merit μβ₀ /MW=3.4 10^-48  esu mol g^-1 .

Twisted One-Dimensional Charge Transfer and Related Y-Shaped Chromophores with a 4H-Pyranylidene Donor: Synthesis and Optical Properties

Three series of push–pull derivatives bearing 4H-pyranylidene as electron donor group and a variety of acceptors were designed. On one hand, one-dimensional chromophores with a thiophene ring (series 1H) or 5-dimethylaminothiophene moiety (series 1N) as an auxiliary donor, non-coplanar with the π-conjugated system, were synthesized. On the other hand, related two-dimensional (2D) Y-shaped chromophores (series 2) were also prepared to compare how the diverse architectures affect the electrochemical, linear, and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The presence of the 5-dimethylaminothiophene moiety in the exocyclic C=C bond of the pyranylidene unit gives rise to oxidation potentials rarely low, and the protonation (with an excess of trifluoroacetic acid) of its derivatives results in the apparition of a new blue-shifted band in the UV–visible spectra. The analysis of the properties of derivatives with and without the additional thiophene ring shows that this auxiliary donor leads to a higher NLO response, accompanied by an enhanced transparency. Y-shaped chromophores of series 2 present a blue-shifted absorption, higher molar extinction coefficients, and higher E_ox values compared to their linear twisted counterparts. As concerns NLO properties, 2D Y-shaped architecture gives rise to somewhat lower μβ values (except for thiobarbiturate derivatives).

Highly Virulent Bactericidal Effects of Curcumin-Based μ-Cages Fabricated by Two-Photon Polymerization

A new antibacterial strategy is reported based on two-photon fabrication of three-dimensional curcumin-embedded μ-cages. Such devices were designed to entrap and kill Staphylococcus aureus bacteria upon visible light irradiation. The proposed concept mainly relies on the pivotal role of curcumin, which is sequentially used as a two-photon active free radical initiator and as a photogenerator of reactive oxygen species within the cage μ-volumes. We show that these μ-cages exhibit extremely high antimicrobial properties, leading to 95% bacteria mortality after only 10 min visible irradiation. A preconcentration mechanism of photogenerated oxygen species is proposed to account for this highly performing bactericidal effect whose virulence can be strikingly switched on by increasing the light exposure time from 5 to 10 min.

Push-pull D-π-Ru-π-A chromophores: synthesis and electrochemical, photophysical and second-order nonlinear optical properties

The present work describes the one-pot synthesis and electrochemical, photophysical and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of a series of dipolar π-delocalized Ru(ii) dialkynyl complexes. The eight new asymmetrical D-π-Ru-π-A push-pull chromophores incorporate pyranylidene ligands as pro-aromatic donor groups (D) and formaldehyde, indane-1,3-dione, pyrimidine or pyrimidinium as electron-attracting groups (A) separated by ruthenium bis-acetylide fragments and π-conjugated linkers. The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of all eight complexes were determined by the Electric-Field-Induced Second Harmonic generation (EFISH) technique (operating at 1907 nm), and were compared to those of their purely organic analogs. All investigated compounds (organic and organometallic) exhibited positive μβ values, which dramatically increased for the complexes due to the presence of ruthenium in the π-conjugated core. The second-order NLO response could also be easily modulated by changing the nature of alkynyl substituents. The most promising ruthenium complexes 7 and 8 of the series with the pyrimidinium fragment displayed μβ values of 14 000 × 10^-48 esu. The effect of structural modifications on the redox and spectroscopic properties of the complexes was also studied. The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) occurring through the ruthenium center of the push-pull σ-dialkynyl complexes was investigated by combining experimental and theoretical data.

Incorporation of a platinum center in the pi-conjugated core of push-pull chromophores for nonlinear optics (NLO)

In this article, we describe the synthesis, redox characteristics, and linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of seven new unsymmetrical push-pull diacetylide platinum-based complexes. These D-π-Pt-π-A complexes incorporate pyranylidene ligands as pro-aromatic donor groups (D), diazine rings as electron-withdrawing groups (A), and various aromatic fragments (styryl or thienylvinyl) as π-linkers separating the platinum diacetylide unit from the donor and the acceptor groups. This is one of the first examples of push-pull chromophores incorporating a platinum center in the π-conjugated core. The NLO properties of these complexes were compared with those of their purely organic analogues. All compounds (organic and organometallic) exhibited positive μβ values, which dramatically increased upon methylation of the pyrimidine fragment. However, this increase was even more significant in the complexes due to the presence of platinum in the π-conjugated core. The effects of the linker on the redox and spectroscopic properties of the complexes are also discussed. In addition, DFT calculations were performed in order to gain further insight into the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) occurring through the platinum center.

Alphabet-Inspired Design of (Hetero)Aromatic Push-Pull Chromophores

Push-pull molecules represent a unique and fascinating class of organic π-conjugated materials. Herein, we provide a summary of their recent extraordinary design inspired by letters of the alphabet, especially focusing on H-, L-, T-, V-, X-, and Y-shaped molecules. Representative structures from each class were presented and their fundamental properties and prospective applications were discussed. In particular, emphasis is given to molecules recently prepared in our laboratory with T-, X-, and Y-shaped arrangements based on indan-1,3-dione, benzene, pyridine, pyrazine, imidazole, and triphenylamine. These push-pull molecules turned out to be very efficient charge-transfer chromophores with tunable properties suitable for second-order nonlinear optics, two-photon absorption, reversible pH-induced and photochromic switching, photocatalysis, and intercalation.

Design, synthesis, linear and nonlinear photophysical properties of novel pyrimidine-based imidazole derivatives

New 8-substituted BODIPY-based chromophores: synthesis, optical and electrochemical properties

BODIPY-based chromophores, in which an electron withdrawing difluoro-boraindacene fragment is connected via position 8 to different donor fragments, were synthesized. Their electrochemical and photophysical properties were studied. All compounds exhibit a quasi-reversible oxidation corresponding to the formation of a BODIPY π-radical cation at around 0.8 V vs. FeCp

Series of Carbazole-Pyrimidine Conjugates: Syntheses and Electronic, Photophysical, and Electrochemical Properties

A series of carbazole-pyrimidine conjugates 1-17 were synthesized by Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling, oxidation, and nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions. In 1-17, the carbazole moieties are connected at the 4,6-positions of the pyrimidine ring either directly or via ethynylene or vinylene spacers, and various electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituents are introduced at the 2-position of the pyrimidine ring. The effects of structural variations on the electronic, photophysical, and electrochemical properties of 1-17 were comprehensively investigated. Compounds 1-17 exhibit intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) states, which essentially lead to moderate-to-strong fluorescence emission with large Stokes shifts depending on the solvent polarity. These compounds tend to show significant changes in optical and fluorescence properties upon addition of trifluoroacetic acid. The electron-accepting ability of these compounds can be tuned by both substituents on the pyrimidine moiety and spacers. The ethynylene spacer lowers both the HOMO and LUMO levels, while the vinylene spacer elevates the HOMO level and lowers the LUMO level. The X-ray crystal structures of 3, 6, 11, and 14 are also disclosed.

Synthesis and optical properties of novel D–π–A–π–D type cationic cyclopentadienyliron complexes of arenes

With the enlarged and annulated ICT conjugation systems, three new cationic cyclopentadienyliron complexes exhibited significantly better third-order NLO absorption properties than the commercial cyclopentadienyliron arene complexes I-261.
