Selective Formation of Indene through the Reaction of Benzyl Radicals with Acetylene

Unconventional gas-phase synthesis of biphenyl and its atropisomeric methyl-substituted derivatives

The biphenyl molecule (C12H10) acts as a fundamental molecular backbone in the stereoselective synthesis of organic materials due to its inherent twist angle causing atropisomerism in substituted derivatives and in molecular mass growth processes in circumstellar environments and combustion systems. Here, we reveal an unconventional low-temperature phenylethynyl addition-cyclization-aromatization mechanism for the gas-phase preparation of biphenyl (C12H10) along with ortho-, meta-, and para-substituted methylbiphenyl (C13H12) derivatives through crossed molecular beams and computational studies providing compelling evidence on their formation via bimolecular gas-phase reactions of phenylethynyl radicals (C6H5CC, X2A1) with 1,3-butadiene-d6 (C4D6), isoprene (CH2C(CH3)CHCH2), and 1,3-pentadiene (CH2CHCHCHCH3). The dynamics involve de-facto barrierless phenylethynyl radical additions via submerged barriers followed by facile cyclization and hydrogen shift prior to hydrogen atom emission and aromatization to racemic mixtures (ortho, meta) of biphenyls in overall exoergic reactions. These findings not only challenge our current perception of biphenyls as high temperature markers in combustion systems and astrophysical environments, but also identify biphenyls as fundamental building blocks of complex polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as coronene (C24H12) eventually leading to carbonaceous nanoparticles (soot, grains) in combustion systems and in deep space thus affording critical insight into the low-temperature hydrocarbon chemistry in our universe.

One Collision-Two Substituents: Gas-Phase Preparation of Xylenes under Single-Collision Conditions

The fundamental reaction pathways to the simplest dialkylsubstituted aromatics-xylenes (C6 H4 (CH3 )2 )-in high-temperature combustion flames and in low-temperature extraterrestrial environments are still unknown, but critical to understand the chemistry and molecular mass growth processes in these extreme environments. Exploiting crossed molecular beam experiments augmented by state-of-the-art electronic structure and statistical calculations, this study uncovers a previously elusive, facile gas-phase synthesis of xylenes through an isomer-selective reaction of 1-propynyl (methylethynyl, CH3 CC) with 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene (isoprene, C5 H8 ). The reaction dynamics are driven by a barrierless addition of the radical to the diene moiety of 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene followed by extensive isomerization (hydrogen shifts, cyclization) prior to unimolecular decomposition accompanied by aromatization via atomic hydrogen loss. This overall exoergic reaction affords a preparation of xylenes not only in high-temperature environments such as in combustion flames and around circumstellar envelopes of carbon-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars, but also in low-temperature cold molecular clouds (10 K) and in hydrocarbon-rich atmospheres of planets and their moons such as Triton and Titan. Our study established a hitherto unknown gas-phase route to xylenes and potentially more complex, disubstituted benzenes via a single collision event highlighting the significance of an alkyl-substituted ethynyl-mediated preparation of aromatic molecules in our Universe.

A unified reaction network on the formation of five-membered ringed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their role in ring expansion processes through radical-radical reactions

Exploiting a chemical microreactor in combination with an isomer-selective product identification through fragment-free photoionization utilizing tunable vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light in tandem with the detection of the ionized molecules by a high resolution reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (Re-TOF-MS), the present investigation reveals molecular mass growth processes to four distinct polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons carrying two six- and one five-membered ring (C₁₃H₁₀): 3H-cyclopenta[a]naphthalene, 1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalene, 1H-cyclopenta[a]naphthalene, and fluorene in the gas phase. Temperatures of 973 and 1023 K simulating conditions in combustion settings along with circumstellar envelopes of carbon-rich stars and planetary nebulae. These reactions highlight the importance of methyl-substituted aromatic reactants (biphenyl, naphthalene) which can be converted to the methylene (-CH₂˙) motive by hydrogen abstraction or photolysis. Upon reaction with acetylene, methylene-substituted aromatics carrying a hydrogen atom at the ortho position of the ring can be then converted to cyclopentadiene-annulated aromatics thus providing a versatile pathway to five-membered ring aromatics at elevated temperatures.

Gas-Phase Infrared Spectra of the C7H5 Radical and Its Bimolecular Reaction Products

Resonance-stabilized radicals are considered as possible intermediates in the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in interstellar space. Here, we investigate the fulvenallenyl radical, the most stable C₇H₅ isomer by IR/UV ion dip spectroscopy employing free electron laser radiation in the mid-infrared region between 550 and 1750 cm^-1. The radical is generated by pyrolysis from phthalide. Various jet-cooled reaction products are identified by their mass-selective IR spectra in the fingerprint region, based on a comparison with computed spectra. Interestingly, benzyl is present as a second resonance-stabilized radical. It is connected to fulvenallenyl by a sequence of two H atom losses or additions. Among the identified aromatic hydrocarbons are toluene and styrene, as well as polycyclic molecules, such as indene, naphthalene, fluorene and phenanthrene. Mechanisms for the formation of PAH from C₇H₅ have already been suggested in previous computational work. In particular, the radical/radical reaction of two fulvenallenyl radicals provides an efficient route to phenanthrene in one bimolecular step and might be relevant for PAH formation under astrochemical conditions.

The Role of Methylaryl Radicals in the Growth of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: The Formation of Five-Membered Rings

The regions of the C₁₃H₁₁ potential energy surface (PES) related to the unimolecular isomerization and decomposition of the 1-methylbiphenylyl radical and accessed by the 1-/2-methylnaphthyl + C₂H₂ reactions have been explored by ab initio G3(MP2,CC)//B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) calculations. The kinetics of these reactions relevant to the growth of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) under high-temperature conditions in circumstellar envelopes and in combustion flames has been studied employing the RRKM-Master Equation approach. The unimolecular reaction of 1-methylbiphenylyl proceeding via a five-membered ring closure followed by H elimination is predicted to be very fast, on a submicrosecond scale above 1000 K and to result in the formation of an embedded five-membered ring in the 9H-fluorene product. The 1-/2-methylnaphthyl + C₂H₂ reaction mechanism involves acetylene addition to the radical on the methylene group followed by a six- or five-membered ring closure and aromatization via an H atom loss. Despite of the complexity of the C₁₃H₁₁ PES, these straightforward pathways are dominant in the high-temperature regime (above ∼1000 K), with the prevailing products being phenalene, with a significant contribution of 1H-cyclopenta(a)naphthalene, for 1-methylnaphthyl + C₂H₂, and 1H-cyclopenta(b)naphthalene and 3H-cyclopenta(a)naphthalene, for 2-methylnaphthyl + C₂H₂. The methylnaphthyl reactions with acetylene represent a clean source of the three-ring PAHs, but they are relatively slow owing to the high entrance barriers of ∼10 kcal/mol, with the rate constants of about an order of magnitude lower as compared to those for naphthyl + allene and σ-aryl + C₂H₂. The 1-methylnaphthyl + C₂H₂ and 2-methylnaphthyl + C₂H₂ reactions represent prototypes for PAH growth by an extra six- and five-membered ring on a zigzag edge or a corner of PAH and the generated modified Arrhenius expressions are recommended for kinetic modeling of PAH expansion by the mechanism of acetylene addition to methylaryl radicals.

Unconventional excited-state dynamics in the concerted benzyl (C7H7) radical self-reaction to anthracene (C14H10)

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are prevalent in deep space and on Earth as products in combustion processes bearing direct relevance to energy efficiency and environmental remediation. Reactions between hydrocarbon radicals in particular have been invoked as critical molecular mass growth processes toward cyclization leading to these PAHs. However, the mechanism of the formation of PAHs through radical – radical reactions are largely elusive. Here, we report on a combined computational and experimental study of the benzyl (C₇H₇) radical self-reaction to phenanthrene and anthracene (C₁₄H₁₀) through unconventional, isomer-selective excited state dynamics. Whereas phenanthrene formation is initiated via a barrierless recombination of two benzyl radicals on the singlet ground state surface, formation of anthracene commences through an exotic transition state on the excited state triplet surface through cycloaddition. Our findings challenge conventional wisdom that PAH formation via radical-radical reactions solely operates on electronic ground state surfaces and open up a previously overlooked avenue for a more “rapid” synthesis of aromatic, multi-ringed structures via excited state dynamics in the gas phase.

An Aromatic Universe-A Physical Chemistry Perspective

This Perspective presents recent advances in our knowledge of the fundamental elementary mechanisms involved in the low- and high-temperature molecular mass growth processes to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in combustion systems and in extraterrestrial environments (hydrocarbon-rich atmospheres of planets and their moons, cold molecular clouds, circumstellar envelopes). Molecular beam studies combined with electronic structure calculations extracted five key elementary mechanisms: Hydrogen Abstraction-Acetylene Addition, Hydrogen Abstraction-Vinylacetylene Addition, Phenyl Addition-DehydroCyclization, Radical-Radical Reactions, and Methylidyne Addition-Cyclization-Aromatization. These studies, summarized here, provide compelling evidence that key classes of aromatic molecules can be synthesized in extreme environments covering low temperatures in molecular clouds (10 K) and hydrocarbon-rich atmospheres of planets and their moons (35-150 K) to high-temperature environments like circumstellar envelopes of carbon-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars stars and combustion systems at temperatures above 1400 K thus shedding light on the aromatic universe we live in.

Low-temperature gas-phase formation of indene in the interstellar medium

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are fundamental molecular building blocks of fullerenes and carbonaceous nanostructures in the interstellar medium and in combustion systems. However, an understanding of the formation of aromatic molecules carrying five-membered rings-the essential building block of nonplanar PAHs-is still in its infancy. Exploiting crossed molecular beam experiments augmented by electronic structure calculations and astrochemical modeling, we reveal an unusual pathway leading to the formation of indene (C₉H₈)-the prototype aromatic molecule with a five-membered ring-via a barrierless bimolecular reaction involving the simplest organic radical-methylidyne (CH)-and styrene (C₆H₅C₂H₃) through the hitherto elusive methylidyne addition-cyclization-aromatization (MACA) mechanism. Through extensive structural reorganization of the carbon backbone, the incorporation of a five-membered ring may eventually lead to three-dimensional PAHs such as corannulene (C₂₀H₁₀) along with fullerenes (C₆₀, C₇₀), thus offering a new concept on the low-temperature chemistry of carbon in our galaxy.

Off the Beaten Path: Almost Clean Formation of Indene from the ortho-Benzyne + Allyl Reaction

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) play an important role in chemistry both in the terrestrial setting and in the interstellar medium. Various, albeit often inefficient, chemical mechanisms have been proposed to explain PAH formation, but few yield polycyclic hydrocarbons cleanly. Alternative and quite promising pathways have been suggested to address these shortcomings with key starting reactants including resonance stabilized radicals (RSRs) and o-benzyne. Here we report on a combined experimental and theoretical study of the reaction allyl + o-benzyne. Indene was found to be the primary product and statistical modeling predicts only 0.1% phenylallene and 0.1% 3-phenyl-1-propyne as side products. The quantitative and likely barrierless formation of indene yields important insights into the role resonance stabilized radicals play in the formation of polycyclic hydrocarbons.

A Barrierless Pathway Accessing the C9H9 and C9H8 Potential Energy Surfaces via the Elementary Reaction of Benzene with 1-Propynyl

The crossed molecular beams reactions of the 1-propynyl radical (CH₃CC; X²A₁) with benzene (C₆H₆; X¹A_1g) and D6-benzene (C₆D₆; X¹A_1g) were conducted to explore the formation of C₉H₈ isomers under single-collision conditions. The underlying reaction mechanisms were unravelled through the combination of the experimental data with electronic structure and statistical RRKM calculations. These data suggest the formation of 1-phenyl-1-propyne (C₆H₅CCCH₃) via the barrierless addition of 1-propynyl to benzene forming a low-lying doublet C₉H₉ intermediate that dissociates by hydrogen atom emission via a tight transition state. In accordance with our experiments, RRKM calculations predict that the thermodynamically most stable isomer – the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) indene – is not formed via this reaction. With all barriers lying below the energy of the reactants, this reaction is viable in the cold interstellar medium where several methyl-substituted molecules have been detected. Its underlying mechanism therefore advances our understanding of how methyl-substituted hydrocarbons can be formed under extreme conditions such as those found in the molecular cloud TMC-1. Implications for the chemistry of the 1-propynyl radical in astrophysical environments are also discussed.

Reactivity of the Indenyl Radical (C9 H7 ) with Acetylene (C2 H2 ) and Vinylacetylene (C4 H4 )

The reactions of the indenyl radicals with acetylene (C₂ H₂ ) and vinylacetylene (C₄ H₄ ) is studied in a hot chemical reactor coupled to synchrotron based vacuum ultraviolet ionization mass spectrometry. These experimental results are combined with theory to reveal that the resonantly stabilized and thermodynamically most stable 1-indenyl radical (C₉ H₇ ^. ) is always formed in the pyrolysis of 1-, 2-, 6-, and 7-bromoindenes at 1500 K. The 1-indenyl radical reacts with acetylene yielding 1-ethynylindene plus atomic hydrogen, rather than adding a second acetylene molecule and leading to ring closure and formation of fluorene as observed in other reaction mechanisms such as the hydrogen abstraction acetylene addition or hydrogen abstraction vinylacetylene addition pathways. While this reaction mechanism is analogous to the bimolecular reaction between the phenyl radical (C₆ H₅ ^. ) and acetylene forming phenylacetylene (C₆ H₅ CCH), the 1-indenyl+acetylene→1-ethynylindene+hydrogen reaction is highly endoergic (114 kJ mol^-1 ) and slow, contrary to the exoergic (-38 kJ mol^-1 ) and faster phenyl+acetylene→phenylacetylene+hydrogen reaction. In a similar manner, no ring closure leading to fluorene formation was observed in the reaction of 1-indenyl radical with vinylacetylene. These experimental results are explained through rate constant calculations based on theoretically derived potential energy surfaces.

Combined Experimental and Computational Study on the Reaction Dynamics of the 1-Propynyl (CH3CC)-1,3-Butadiene (CH2CHCHCH2) System and the Formation of Toluene under Single Collision Conditions

The crossed beams reactions of the 1-propynyl radical (CH₃CC; X²A₁) with 1,3-butadiene (CH₂CHCHCH₂; X¹A_g), 1,3-butadiene- d₆ (CD₂CDCDCD₂; X¹A_g), 1,3-butadiene- d₄ (CD₂CHCHCD₂; X¹A_g), and 1,3-butadiene- d₂ (CH₂CDCDCH₂; X¹A_g) were performed under single collision conditions at collision energies of about 40 kJ mol^-1. The underlying reaction mechanisms were unraveled through the combination of the experimental data with electronic structure calculations at the CCSD(T)-F12/cc-pVTZ-f12//B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) + ZPE(B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level of theory along with statistical Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) calculations. Together, these data suggest the formation of the thermodynamically most stable C₇H₈ isomer-toluene (C₆H₅CH₃)-via the barrierless addition of 1-propynyl to the 1,3-butadiene terminal carbon atom, forming a low-lying C₇H₉ intermediate that undergoes multiple isomerization steps resulting in cyclization and ultimately aromatization following hydrogen atom elimination. RRKM calculations predict that the thermodynamically less stable isomers 1,3-heptadien-5-yne, 5-methylene-1,3-cyclohexadiene, and 3-methylene-1-hexen-4-yne are also synthesized. Since the 1-propynyl radical may be present in cold molecular clouds such as TMC-1, this pathway could potentially serve as a carrier of the methyl group incorporating itself into methyl-substituted (poly)acetylenes or aromatic systems such as toluene via overall exoergic reaction mechanisms that are uninhibited by an entrance barrier. Such pathways are a necessary alternative to existing high energy reactions leading to toluene that are formally closed in the cold regions of space and are an important step toward understanding the synthesis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in space's harsh extremes.

On the formation and the isomer specific detection of methylacetylene (CH3CCH), propene (CH3CHCH2), cyclopropane (c-C3H6), vinylacetylene (CH2CHCCH), and 1,3-butadiene (CH2CHCHCH2) from interstellar methane ice analogues

Pure methane (CH4) ices processed by energetic electrons under ultra-high vacuum conditions to simulate secondary electrons formed via galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) penetrating interstellar ice mantles have been shown to produce an array of complex hydrocarbons with the general formulae: CnH2n+2 (n = 4-8), CnH2n (n = 3-9), CnH2n-2 (n = 3-9), CnH2n-4 (n = 4-9), and CnH2n-6 (n = 6-7). By monitoring the in situ chemical evolution of the ice combined with temperature programmed desorption (TPD) studies and tunable single photon ionization coupled to a reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer, specific isomers of C3H4, C3H6, C4H4, and C4H6 were probed. These experiments confirmed the synthesis of methylacetylene (CH3CCH), propene (CH3CHCH2), cyclopropane (c-C3H6), vinylacetylene (CH2CHCCH), 1-butyne (HCCC2H5), 2-butyne (CH3CCCH3), 1,2-butadiene (H2CCCH(CH3)), and 1,3-butadiene (CH2CHCHCH2) with yields of 2.17 ± 0.95 × 10-4, 3.7 ± 1.5 × 10-3, 1.23 ± 0.77 × 10-4, 1.28 ± 0.65 × 10-4, 4.01 ± 1.98 × 10-5, 1.97 ± 0.98 × 10-4, 1.90 ± 0.84 × 10-5, and 1.41 ± 0.72 × 10-4 molecules eV-1, respectively. Mechanistic studies exploring the formation routes of methylacetylene, propene, and vinylacetylene were also conducted, and revealed the additional formation of the 1,2,3-butatriene isomer. Several of the above isomers, methylacetylene, propene, vinylacetylene, and 1,3-butadiene, have repeatedly been shown to be important precursors in the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), but until now their interstellar synthesis has remained elusive.

Theoretical Study of the Reaction Mechanism and Kinetics of the Phenyl + Allyl and Related Benzyl + Vinyl Associations

Potential energy surfaces for the allyl + phenyl and benzyl + vinyl barrierless radical association reactions have been studied at the CCSD(T)-F12/cc-pVTZ-f12//B3LYP/6-311G** level of theory. Variable reaction coordinate transition state theory (VRC-TST) has been employed to evaluate high-pressure limit rate constants for the barrierless channels. Then, Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus master equation (RRKM-ME) calculations have been performed to assess phenomenological rate constants and product branching ratios of various reaction channels at different temperatures and pressures. The initial step of both radical association reactions produces 3-phenylpropene which can further dissociate into a variety of bimolecular products including the indene precursor 1-phenylallyl + H. The results showed that at typical combustion conditions the collisional stabilization of 3-phenylpropene dominates both the phenyl + allyl and benzyl + vinyl reactions at temperatures below 1000 K and remains important at high pressures up to 2500 K. The main bimolecular products of the two reactions at high temperatures are predicted to be benzyl + vinyl and phenyl + allyl, respectively. The well-skipping mechanism to form 1-phenylallyl directly in the allyl + phenyl and benzyl + vinyl reactions appeared to be not significant, however, the reactions can provide some contributions into the formation of the indene precursor via the 3-phenylpropene stabilization/dissociation sequence and most of all, via the formation of 3-phenylpropene itself, which then can undergo H-abstraction by available radicals to produce 1-phenylallyl. The allyl + phenyl reaction can also contribute to the formation of two-ring PAH by producing benzyl radical at high temperatures, either by the well-skipping or stabilization/dissociation mechanisms; in turn, benzyl can readily react with acetylene or propargyl radical to form indene or naphthalene precursors, respectively. Rate expressions for all important reaction channels in a broad range of temperatures and pressures have been generated for kinetic modeling.

VUV Photoionization Study of the Formation of the Simplest Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon: Naphthalene (C10H8)

The formation of the simplest polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), naphthalene (C₁₀H₈), was explored in a high-temperature chemical reactor under combustion-like conditions in the phenyl (C₆H₅)-vinylacetylene (C₄H₄) system. The products were probed utilizing tunable vacuum ultraviolet light by scanning the photoionization efficiency (PIE) curve at a mass-to-charge m/ z = 128 (C₁₀H₈⁺) of molecules entrained in a molecular beam. The data fitting with PIE reference curves of naphthalene, 4-phenylvinylacetylene (C₆H₅CCC₂H₃), and trans-1-phenylvinylacetylene (C₆H₅CHCHCCH) indicates that the isomers were generated with branching ratios of 43.5±9.0 : 6.5±1.0 : 50.0±10.0%. Kinetics simulations agree nicely with the experimental findings with naphthalene synthesized via the hydrogen abstraction-vinylacetylene addition (HAVA) pathway and through hydrogen-assisted isomerization of phenylvinylacetylenes. The HAVA route to naphthalene at elevated temperatures represents an alternative pathway to the hydrogen abstraction-acetylene addition (HACA) forming naphthalene in flames and circumstellar envelopes, whereas in cold molecular clouds, HAVA synthesizes naphthalene via a barrierless bimolecular route.

On the formation of nitrogen-substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) in circumstellar and interstellar environments

Pressure-dependent rate constants for PAH growth: formation of indene and its conversion to naphthalene

Unraveling the mechanisms for growth of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) requires accurate temperature- and pressure-dependent rate coefficients for a great variety of feasible pathways. Even the pathways for the formation of the simplest PAHs, indene and naphthalene, are fairly complex. These pathways provide important prototypes for modeling larger PAH growth. In this work we employ the ab initio RRKM theory-based master equation approach to predict the rate constants involved in the formation of indene and its conversion to naphthalene. The reactions eventually leading to indene involve C₉H_x (x = 8–11) potential energy surfaces (PESs) and include C₆H₅ + C₃H₄ (allene and propyne), C₆H₆ + C₃H₃, benzyl + C₂H₂, C₆H₅ + C₃H₆, C₆H₆ + C₃H₅ and C₆H₅ + C₃H₅. These predictions allow us to make a number of valuable observations on the role of various mechanisms. For instance, we demonstrate that reactions which can significantly contribute to the formation of indene include phenyl + allene and H-assisted isomerization to indene of its major product, 3-phenylpropyne, benzyl + acetylene, and the reactions of the phenyl radical with propene and the allyl radical, both proceeding via the 3-phenylpropene intermediate. 3-Phenylpropene can be activated to a 1-phenylallyl radical, which in turn rapidly decomposes to indene. Next, indene can be converted to benzofulvene or naphthalene under typical combustion conditions, via its activation by H atom abstraction and methyl substitution on the five-membered ring followed by isomerization and decomposition of the resulting 1-methylindenyl radical, C₁₀H₉ → C₁₀H₈ + H. Alternatively, the same region of the C₁₀H₉ PES can be accessed through the reaction of benzyl with propargyl, C₇H₇ + C₃H₃ → C₁₀H₁₀ → C₁₀H₉ + H, which therefore can also contribute to the formation of benzofulvene or naphthalene. Benzofulvene easily transforms to naphthalene by H-assisted isomerization. An analysis of the effect of pressure on the reaction outcome and relative product yields is given, and modified Arrhenius fits of the rate constants are reported for the majority of the considered reactions. Ultimately, the implementation of such expressions in detailed kinetic models will help quantify the role of these reactions for PAH growth in various environments.

Time- and Isomer-Resolved Measurements of Sequential Addition of Acetylene to the Propargyl Radical

Soot formation in combustion is a complex process in which polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are believed to play a critical role. Recent works concluded that three consecutive additions of acetylene (C2H2) to propargyl (C3H3) create a facile route to the PAH indene (C9H8). However, the isomeric forms of C5H5 and C7H7 intermediates in this reaction sequence are not known. We directly investigate these intermediates using time- and isomer-resolved experiments. Both the resonance stabilized vinylpropargyl (vp-C5H5) and 2,4-cyclopentadienyl (c-C5H5) radical isomers of C5H5 are produced, with substantially different intensities at 800 K vs 1000 K. In agreement with literature master equation calculations, we find that c-C5H5 + C2H2 produces only the tropyl isomer of C7H7 (tp-C7H7) below 1000 K, and that tp-C7H7 + C2H2 terminates the reaction sequence yielding C9H8 (indene) + H. This work demonstrates a pathway for PAH formation that does not proceed through benzene.
