Modeling and Uncertainty Quantification of Vapor Sorption and Diffusion in Heterogeneous Polymers

Polymer degradation through chemical change: a quantum-based test of inferred reactions in irradiated polydimethylsiloxane

Chemical reaction schemes are key conceptual tools for interpreting the results of experiments and simulations, but often carry implicit assumptions that remain largely unverified for complicated systems. Established schemes for chemical damage through crosslinking in irradiated silicone polymers comprised of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) date to the 1950's and correlate small-molecule off-gassing with specific crosslink features. In this regard, we use a somewhat reductionist model to develop a general conditional probability and correlation analysis approach that tests these types of causal connections between proposed experimental observables to reexamine this chemistry through quantum-based molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations. Analysis of the QMD simulations suggests that the established reaction schemes are qualitatively reasonable, but lack strong causal connections under a broad set of conditions that would enable making direct quantitative connections between off-gassing and crosslinking. Further assessment of the QMD data uncovers a strong (but nonideal) quantitative connection between exceptionally hard-to-measure chain scission events and the formation of silanol (Si-OH) groups. Our analysis indicates that conventional notions of radiation damage to PDMS should be further qualified and not necessarily used ad hoc. In addition, our efforts enable independent quantum-based tests that can inform confidence in assumed connections between experimental observables without the burden of fully elucidating entire reaction networks.

Theoretical and Experimental Investigation on the Moisture Sorption Kinetics of a PVA/LiCl Composite Membrane in a Dynamic Humidity Environment

The PVA/LiCl composite membrane is an important material with a selective permeation to moisture. In this study, the sorption kinetics characteristics of the PVA/LiCl composite membrane are investigated in a dynamic humidity environment. The sorption kinetics curves of the PVA/LiCl composite membranes with different LiCl contents were measured in the range from 10 to 90% relative humidity, and the kinetics characteristics of the sorption components of the total moisture uptake were analyzed with a triple-mode sorption model. The results show that the process of pooling adsorption occurs only when the amount of Henry absorption exceeds a threshold. With the increase in LiCl content, the threshold gradually decreases, indicating that introducing LiCl in the membrane mainly affects the process of pooling adsorption. In the desorption part of the kinetics curve, the amounts of Henry absorption and pooling adsorption gradually decrease, while the moisture adsorbed by the hydrophilic hydroxyls, i.e., the amount of Langmuir adsorption, is still largely retained in the membrane, resulting in the water-retaining performance in a low-humidity environment. It is noteworthy that in a high-humidity environment, the amounts of Henry absorption and Langmuir adsorption are almost evenly distributed in the film, while the amount of pooling adsorption near the surface is significantly higher than that at the center. The reason is that with the increase in humidity, the rate of pooling adsorption near the surface increases significantly, resulting in the majority of the moisture diffusing into the dense membrane clusters near the surface. The established theoretical method and model parameters can be adopted to predict the moisture sorption and desorption processes of the PVA/LiCl composite membrane in a dynamic humidity environment.

Predicting 3D moisture sorption behavior of materials from 1D investigations

Moisture in materials can be a source of future outgassing and exacerbate unwanted changes in physical and chemical properties. Here, we investigate the effect of sample size and shape on the moisture transport phenomena through a combined experimental and modeling approach. Several different materials varying in size and shape were investigated over a wide range of relative humidities (0–90%) and temperatures (\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$30{-}70^{\,\circ } \hbox {C}$$\end{document}30-70∘C) using gravimetric type dynamic vapor sorption (DVS). A dynamic triple-mode sorption model, developed previously, was employed to describe the experimental results with good success; the model includes absorption, adsorption, pooling (clustering) of species, and molecular diffusion. Here we show that the full triple-mode sorption model is robust enough to predict the dynamic uptake and outgassing of 3-dimensional (3D) samples using parameters derived from quasi-1D samples. This successful demonstration on three different materials (filled polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), unfilled PDMS, and ceramic inorganic composite) illustrates that the model is robust at describing the scale-independent physics and chemistry of moisture sorption and diffusion materials. This work demonstrates that while sorption mechanisms manifest in testing of all sample sizes, some of these mechanisms were so subtle that they were overlooked in our initial modeling and assessment, illustrating the importance of multi-scale experiments in the development of robust predictive capabilities. Our study also outlines the challenges and viable solutions for global optimization of a multi-parameter model. The ability to quantify moisture sorption and diffusion, independent of scale, using 1D lab-scale experiments enables prediction of long-term bulk materials behavior in real applications.

Anisotropic Hydrolysis Susceptibility in Deformed Polydimethylsiloxanes

Chemical reactions involving the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) backbone can induce significant network rearrangements and ultimately degrade macro-scale mechanical properties of silicone components. Using two levels of quantum chemical theory, we identify a possible electronic driver for chemical susceptibility in strained PDMS chains and explore the complicated interplay between hydrolytic chain scissioning reactions, mechanical deformations of the backbone, water attack vector, and chain mobility. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that susceptibility to hydrolysis varies significantly with the vector for water attacks on silicon backbone atoms, which matches strain-induced anisotropic changes in the backbone electronic structure. Efficient semiempirical density functional tight binding (DFTB) calculations are shown to reproduce DFT predictions for select reaction pathways and facilitate more exhaustive explorations of configuration space. We show that concerted strains of the backbone must occur over at least a few monomer units to significantly increase hydrolysis susceptibility. In addition, we observe that sustaining tension across multiple monomer lengths by constraining molecular degrees of freedom further enhances hydrolysis susceptibility, leading to barrierless scission reactions for less substantial backbone deformations than otherwise. We then compute chain scission probabilities as functions of the backbone degrees of freedom, revealing complicated configurational interdependencies that impact the likelihood for hydrolytic degradation. The trends identified in our study suggest simple physical descriptions for the synergistic coupling between local mechanical deformation and environmental moisture in hydrolytic degradation of silicones.

Role of filler and its heterostructure on moisture sorption mechanisms in polyimide films

Moisture sorption and diffusion exacerbate hygrothermal aging and can significantly alter the chemical and mechanical properties of polymeric-based components over time. In this study, we employ a multi-pronged multi-scale approach to model and understand moisture diffusion and sorption processes in polyimide polymers. A reactive transport model with triple-mode sorption (i.e., Henry's, Langmuir, and pooling), experiments, and first principles atomistic computations were combined to synergistically explore representative systems of Kapton H and Kapton HN polymers. We find that the CaHPO4 processing aid used in Kapton HN increases the total moisture uptake (~0.5 wt%) relative to Kapton H. Henry's mode is found to play a major role in moisture uptake for both materials, accounting for >90% contribution to total uptake.However, the pooling mode uptake in Kapton HN was ~5 times higher than in Kapton H. First principles thermodynamics calculations based on density functional theory predict that water molecules chemisorb (with binding energy  ~17-25 kcal/mol) on CaHPO4 crystal surfaces. We identify significant anisotropy in surface binding affinity, suggesting a possible route to tune and mitigate moisture uptake in Kapton-based systems through controlled crystal growth favoring exposure of CaHPO4 (101) surfaces during manufacturing.

Dynamic Triple-Mode Sorption and Outgassing in Materials

Moisture uptake and outgassing can be detrimental to a system by altering the chemical and mechanical properties of materials within the system over time. In this work, we conducted isotherm experiments to investigate dynamic moisture sorption and desorption in markedly different materials, i.e., a polymeric material, Sylgard-184 and a ceramic aluminosilicate material, Zircar RS-1200, at different temperatures (30 °C-70 °C) by varying the water activity (0.0-0.90). Sylgard-184 showed a linear sorption and outgassing behavior with no-hysteresis over the entire temperature and water activity range considered here. Whereas, the sorption and outgassing of Zircar RS-1200 was highly non-linear with significant hysteresis, especially at higher water activities, at all temperatures considered here. The type of hysteresis suggested the presence of mesopores in Zircar RS-1200, whereas the lack of hysteresis in Sylgard-184 indicates that it has a nonporous structure. A diffusion model coupled with a dynamic, triple-mode sorption (Langmuir, Henry, and pooling modes) model employed in this study matched our experimental data very well and provides mechanistic insight into the processes. Our triple-mode sorption model was adaptive enough to (1) model these distinctly different materials and (2) predict sorption and outgassing under conditions that are distinctly different from the parameterization experiments.
